Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (04/24-25); Charts Update
So Nomadland didn't debut in the Top 10 back at the end of March (opened in 11th), and no figures were released for it. So I've gone back to estimate it since it's likely going to be in the Top 5 all this week (or 6th) due to the boost it's receiving from winning Best Picture at the Oscars (and Golden Week, but mostly the Oscar boost in its case), and... Japan is very likely already its biggest market, outgrossing its total in the U.S. before Golden Week even began today. Obviously estimating an entire month of release leaves a lot of room for error, but even if they're off a decent bit, that statement is still likely true and certainly will be after today.

Before today's estimate, I've estimated a five-week total (plus this past Mon-Wed) of ¥255 million ($2.3 million). It's probably on track to gross over ¥500 million (~$5 million). Of course, I'm going to presume it'll get a big expansion in the U.S. this week too, so it may end up grossing over $5 million in the U.S. as well, but we'll have to wait and see since no dailies have been released for it yet in the U.S. this week.

Better under-estimate otherwise people would bring piracy again :P

Glad to see the Golden Week is bringing big numbers even though it could have been stronger but it proves again that restrictions are improving BO prospects in JP.

All the increases today are higher than the usual locations indicate, too.

Without Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hyogo, the usual locations was already only accounting for 50-55% of the nation's overall sales (down from 70% or so), but Thursday is missing 25 theaters or so from the calculations (I think due to reservations being suspended until day-of sale at some locations for the holiday period).

Therefore, the usual locations is likely only accounting for 45% or so of the overall sales today (and possibly throughout Golden Week).

I'll do my best estimating them later. But most films are likely doing double the admissions overall versus the usual locations now as they were already close to that. I've been underestimating a lot in the last week or two, so I'm going to be liberal this week.

You're absolutely correct. The industry itself is harsh for animators and illustrators and anyone else involved, so they have it rough from the moment they pick up that pencil, to the moment it's finished for the "fans" to watch and find something (anything) to complain about. Many animators do it because it's a passion of theirs, because for many, there's not much financial benefit (and definitely little thanks or gratitude to be praised with) to be had from getting into this line of work.

This doesn't excuse those that partake in piracy; it still has a negative impact where at least a neutral impact would result from not doing so if it didn't benefit the animators (or anyone involved in getting the product out) in some way.

And back to the box-office for a minute: I'll be posting Daily Estimates during Golden Week. I usually do it for the Top 10 films, but I might limit it to the Top 5 this time (or add a cut-off number) since the bottom part of the Top 10 isn't doing much right now. No notable Hollywood releases this month makes the overall Top 10 weaker (although Nomadland has resurfaced and is expanding), and a few domestic films getting delayed didn't help. I'll wait and see the results from Thursday before making a decision on the number of films to include.

We kinda have to acknowledge that while the conditions anime staff face are indeed deplorable, there are much deeper, more structural reasons why that's the case beyond people downloading torrents or going to unofficial streaming sites or whatever. The morality of piracy is a whole separate discussion people have been having since time immemorial, and I'm sure will continue to have until our civilization returns to dust. I don't find that conversation particularly enlightening however, and think it's a lot more interesting to question how the anime industry as a whole has seen revenues skyrocket year after year (sans a covid dip, presumably), without any improvements in the conditions of the average worker in the industry. If anything, it's only gotten worse for them, as schedules collapse in ever more spectacular ways as production demands increase. If we're fishing for villains here, I've got an inkling that focusing on some rando clicking a torrent link means letting a *muuuuuch* bigger fish off the hook...

There's obviously nothing wrong with telling people to support the things they claim to love, and if everyone stopped paying it's not like things would get *better* for anyone. And in some markets, like with many mangaka, there's a fairly direct relationship between you buying a thing and the creator making more money. So no objections there... but let's be honest about who is slurping up virtually all of the financial support fans are showering on the anime industry these days. It ain't overworked in-betweener #13 or stressed-out production assistant #4.

Rurouni Kenshin: The Final Chapter - The Final - Daily Performance Tracker

4/23 - Fri.: ¥221,336,700 ($2.04 million) / 153,705
4/24 - Sat.: ¥337,429,000 ($3.11 million) / 232,220
4/25 - Sun.: ¥188,571,000 ($1.74 million) / 129,780
4/26 - Mon.: ¥x78,000,000 ($0.72 million) / x55,000 *est.*
4/27 - Tues.: ¥x65,000,000 ($0.60 million) / x45,000 *est.*
4/28 - Wed.: ¥x86,000,000 ($0.79 million) / x66,000 *est.*

6-Day Cumulative Total: ¥976,336,700 ($9.00 million) / 681,708 Admissions *est.*

Pretty solid weekdays so far, even very good I'd say without Tokyo/Osaka. It'll become the second fastest film in the franchise to reach ¥1 billion. Let's see how much Golden Week can add to it starting tomorrow.

Cumulative 13-Day Total: ¥4,147,583,800 ($38.26 million) / 2,899,074 Admissions *est.*

Took a hit on Monday and Tuesday without Tokyo/Osaka, but it had a very good bounce back on Wednesday ahead of Golden Week starting tomorrow! Fastest film in the franchise to reach ¥4 billion, too.

Also, note that Mondays in particular are going to be a lot weaker than usual since many Aeon theaters (every Mon. is Aeon Cinemas Day) are located in malls, which are also closed in Tokyo/Osaka. Monday and Wednesday are usually pretty close as the two biggest weekdays, and you can see a big difference here and with Demon Slayer with Wed. easily thumping Mon. this week.

195-Day Cumulative Total: ¥39,791,619,100 ($380.32 million) / 28,811,056 Admissions *est.*

Note: Mon.-Fri. are rounded estimates (excluding Holiday Mondays), therefore adding up each day won't equal the exact actual total.

Last week's weekdays were all adjusted upwards once again to account for the higher cumulative total as of Sunday. Rural prefectures continue to account for more and more of the overall share, and that'll continue to grow this week without Tokyo and Osaka in the equation. The usual locations is actually only accounting for roughly 50/55% of the overall sales recently, but that might dip under 50% over Golden Week (or until May 11th).

Golden Week begins tomorrow! Demon Slayer is also regaining some of the 4DX screens it gave up two weeks ago for the holiday period.

Animators and illustrators are indeed often treated poorly by their so-called fans. An animator and illustrator, particularly from Japan, is a pretty thankless job by international audiences. I mostly avoid any online discussions because it's very toxic and just full of ungrateful people whining and complaining non-stop. It's sort of ironic that many "fans" are often a real-world representation of the fictitious villains or bad people they hate that likely appear in a lot of series they enjoy.

Back to the box office: I'll have the Daily Trackers updated for Demon Slayer, Detective Conan, and Rurouni Kenshin posted in a few hours before Golden Week officially begins tomorrow.

Due to how the dates aligned this year, every day from April 29th-May 5th is either a national holiday (29th, 3rd, 4th, and 5th) or weekend (1st (also a discount day) and 2nd). Except for Friday (30th), but since it's the Friday after a national holiday and before the weekend, it'll probably act like a pseudo-holiday itself, too. So the next 7 days are absolutely ideal.

The only markets where it could have some noticeable impact may be those with strict restrictions in place where theaters are still under harsh restrictions, or not open at all. But for markets where things are returning to "normal"? I personally don't think it matters. A big selling point for every film in release and releasing soon is giving people the chance to finally go out and do something, and going to the movie theater after so long is probably more appealing than trying to find it online to watch it on your laptop or something.

And anime fans should be aware that not paying to see it is a bit of a slap in the face to the animators, considering the relative low-pay they often receive and amount of time they put into their work to make it as good as possible, especially over the past year with having to deal with COVID at the same time. I like to think the anime community as a whole has mostly moved past the Google searches of "Where can I watch X for free?" Surely paying to see it, if it's available to you, is worth the same price of that fast food combo meal you're probably buying later this week.

I agree with Corpse that it probably won't have much effect as the amount of people torrenting has dropped in favor of streaming sites and more and more people are getting fatigued by the number of sites available.

Sadly though, I disagree that anime fans are aware of it being a slap in the face. Because of various reasons, anime and manga have usually be available for free and there's a good amount of the population who take that for granted despite it being illegal because it's "other people" that they don't see who'd suffer. There are literally people who go to artists at conventions and say "I loved your manga! I read all the illegal scanlations in one day!" to their face or them saying to their twitter account that it's "advertising". There's also been fans of a highly popular manga series tweet to animators of the anime adaptation whining about how it didn't look as good as they wanted or had CG instead of hand-drawn portions (because the scheduling of that production was utterly insane and god-awful). It's spooked some people either off twitter or to private accounts and all entirely foreign fans. I would never assume that anime fans think of the people who make the titles they enjoy because they're "foreign" and the old "out of sight, out of mind" problem.

Due to someone's error in psn, a digital version was released on nyya.
How do you think this will affect the box office in other countries?

Yes increasing IMAX does not mean that we will see that big of an uptick in sales from record breaking numbers (outside DS).

Well, the possibility still haven't changed that much since how many movies will be as big as KnY?
Unless it's Detective Conan, Spirited Away 2, Frozen 3, or a Shinkai Film, then yeah, nothing has a chance.

If somehow DS misses the mark now they will just do a re-release with some added message/footage to get fans one more time. Also it might still bounce back before home media release with simple marketing logo "One last chance to watch it in theaters".

I think the fans (including me) wanted 40B yen to be reached on Rengoku's birthday (May 9) but it's also okay that it won't. Anything after the accolades DS made is amazing already.

Current tracking shows it's impossible to reach 40 billion yen by May 9 now. But the studio can still announce some other good news on Rengoku's birthday. $500 million worldwide and highest worldwide grossing film of 2020, the first ever for non-English language film since the silent era.

Another achievement for Gotouge: Kimetsu just won the Special Award from Osamu Tezuka's 25th Manga Award
https://twitter.com/WSJ_manga/status/13 ... 90405?s=20

How can the author hide themselves so well from the public until this point? Do they have Blood Demon Art like Yushiro? Or they are actually Yushiro and KNY is the true story that happened in the Taisho era? :funny:

So KnY's run is coming to an end huh. Time flew by. It seems like yesterday when I saw KnY's massive opening.
Can't believe it. It's been a fun ride constantly checking out this forum. I'd obviously stay, but Imma need to say Thanks Corpse, thanks everyone for everything.

Look out for me and all the newcummers as well from here on out.

Silly question, but what is KnY?

Nevermind... it's Kimetsu no Yaiba.
