Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (08/23-24)
Projected Top 10 of 2014

01. ¥25.5 billion ($250 million) - Frozen (Disney)
02. ¥8.74 billion ($84.9 million) - The Eternal Zero (Toho)
03. ¥6.50-8.00 billion ($63-78 million) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho)
04. ¥6.60-6.80 billion ($64-66 million) - Maleficent (Disney)
05. ¥4.40-4.60 billion ($43-45 million) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.)

06. ¥4.43 billion ($43.5 million) - Thermae Romae II (Toho)
07. ¥4.25 billion ($41.2 million) - Lupin III vs Detective Conan (Toho)
08. ¥4.09 billion ($40.1 million) - Detective Conan: The Sniper from Another Dimension (Toho)
09. ¥3.70-4.00 billion ($36-39 million) - Memories of Marnie (Toho)
10. ¥3.58 billion ($35.1 million) - Doraemon: Nobita's Great Demon - Peko and the Exploration Party (Toho)

Stand By Me, Doraemon's range is quite wide because it's still pretty new, and with it appealing to an audience much broader outside the normal Doraemon film, it's hard to predict what will happen to it at the end of the month. Children/family films usually fall apart when September begins, but it's appealing to a much broader audience. Maleficent, Rurouni Kenshin 2, and Marnie are unlikely to land outside of their ranges, and other notable films in release (Godzilla, Transformers 4, and Pokemon XY) don't have enough left to make a run at the Top 10 for the year.

Remaining 2014 Top 10 (¥3.5/4 billion+) Contenders:
Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends (Warner Bros.) [09/13]
Interstellar (Warner Bros.) [11/22]
Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) [11/29]

Director Takashi Yamazaki could have 3 films in the Top 10 (The Eternal Zero, Stand By Me, Doraemon, and possibly Parasyte Part 1). I don't think any director has ever accomplished this feat.

If 2014 can manage 10 films above ¥4 billion (locked for 8, 9-11 is possible), it'll be the first time the Top 10 have all been above the mark since 2010 (biggest BO year of all-time), and then 2007 before that. Think of ¥4 billion as about the $225 million equivalent of a release in the US.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (08/23-24)
Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains' Saturday Admissions (08/23)

51,793 (-44%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 3
26,632 (-55%) - Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 2
24,767 (-49%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros) Week 4
17,889 (-58%) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 3
17,039 (--) - Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) NEW
10,980 (-58%) - Maleficent (Disney) Week 8
10,975 (-53%) - Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 6
9,696 (-61%) - Godzilla (Toho) Week 5
7,060 (--) - New Initial D the Movie: Legend 1 - The Awakening (Avex Entertainment) NEW
6,888 (-52%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie

Rough drops from last Saturday, but last Saturday was also stronger than last Sunday meaning it was still receiving some of that Obon crowd boost. Tomorrow should improve all of these drops by 5/10% for the weekend (Doraemon, Pokemon, and Maleficent should see the biggest improvements).

>Not bad for Into the Storm. Japan could be its best market overseas pending a China release.

>New Initial D probably isn't in the Top 10 when all the other chains are factored in, and even if it is, it'll fall out tomorrow and for the weekend itself. It's still impressive to have shown up here, though, on just 30 screens.

Weekend Forecast (08/23-24)

01 (01) ¥468 million ($4.5 million), -33%, ¥4.55 billion ($44.5 million), Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 3
02 (02) ¥230 million ($2.2 million), -41%, ¥1.10 billion ($10.6 million), Hot Road (Shochiku) Week 2
03 (03) ¥221 million ($2.1 million), -38%, ¥3.80 billion ($37.0 million), Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 4
04 (04) ¥196 million ($1.9 million), -44%, ¥2.30 billion ($22.7 million), Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 3
05 (--) ¥130 million ($1.2 million), 0, ¥160 million ($1.4 million), Into the Storm (Warner Bros.) NEW
06 (05) ¥114 million ($1.0 million), -35%, ¥6.20 billion ($60.6 million), Maleficent (Disney) Week 8
07 (07) ¥113 million ($1.0 million), -31%, ¥2.95 billion ($28.9 million), Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 6
08 (06) ¥94 million ($0.9 million), -46%, ¥2.90 billion ($28.4 million), Godzilla (Toho) Week 5
09 (08) ¥80 million ($0.7 million), -32%, ¥2.55 billion ($24.9 million), Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 6
10 (--) ¥45 million ($0.4 million), 0, ¥45 million ($0.4 million), Over Your Dead Body (Toei) NEW

Drops should be a bit on the steep side this weekend since it's post-Obon Week, but since Obon fell primarily on the weekdays last week rather than on the weekend, the drops shouldn't be too bad compared to some recent years. This weekend last year is probably the best comparison.

Generally films that target males or older audiences fall the hardest after Obon, so I expect Transformers and Godzilla will see the biggest drops unless Hot Road plunges in its second weekend (its dailies were pretty weak). And films appealing to children/families usually have the better post-Obon holds, as its one of the last weeks before summer vacation ends.

>Into the Storm looks like it did around 25/30 million ($250/300,000) to me on Friday, so it should be able to debut above ¥100 million. ¥150 million ($1.5 million) or higher will be difficult though.

I honestly don't know how the situation will be handled, but I haven't read anything about any cinema chains being against the campaign.

Maybe if it was a blockbuster release, it'd be a different story. There really isn't that much money being lost (probably more being gained, really). Guardians of the Galaxy is unlikely to do much beyond ¥1 billion ($10 million) in total, maybe ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) if it's really lucky. Remember that superhero films outside of Spider-Man are largely unsuccessful in Japan. Even an established franchise film like X-Men: Days of Future Past barely scrapped by ¥1 billion (¥1.05 billion) earlier this year.

And it won't even be #1 when it opens (Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends opens the same day).

I was referring to the theatres not distributing it (For example a Toho film in Toho theatres). But if you say that the theatres are happy with it than that is fine.

Won't Disney reimburse cinemas for the loss in ticket sales?

It notes that this is the first time something like this has been attempted, too. I don't recall any film ever having anything like this done, either.

Theatres should be loving it though and would be more than happy to oblige I'd think. Discount days (1st of the month, Ladies' Day, etc) are huge for attendance which results in a lot more spent on concessions.

Feel free to share at boxoffice.com. I've been having issues posting there lately.

It's strange that Disney can do this. I would have thought that prices are up to the theatres, and I don't see why they would discount a specific film which they aren't distributing themselves.

Yep.

The fact that a student can spend their silver 500 yen (highest coin denomination) or a few silver 100 coins instead of any bills they may or may not have is an excellent idea. 500 is the perfect convenience price.

Having 1,000 yen on you would get you a train/bus to the theatre, a movie ticket, and a drink, too!

Disney announced today that tickets to Guardians of the Galaxy, opening Sept. 13th in Japan, will be sold for only ¥500 (~$5) during the first 3 days of its release (Friday-Monday).

The campaign is intended to target middle/high school students, a demographic that rarely goes to the movies anymore, and to take advantage of its worldwide success.

This is a pretty big announcement for the film. Audiences are getting about a 60% discount off a regular ticket price for the 3-day holiday opening weekend (Sept. 13-15). The huge discount does not include 3D/IMAX tickets, however, so it's either $5 for a 2D showing or $20 for a 3D showing (the 3D share is going to be nonexistent :P).

October:

17th - A Most Wanted Man (Presido)
18th - Grace of Monaco (Gaga)
24th - Hercules (Paramount)
25th - The Equalizer (Sony)
31st - Dracula Untold [Dracula ZERO] (Toho-Towa)

November:
01st - The Expendables 3 (Shochiku), Beauty and the Beast (Gaga), Son of a Gun (Kadokawa), Nymphomaniac:. Vol II (Broad Media Studios), Mr. Peabody & Sherman (unknown)
14th - Boyhood (Toho-Towa)
22nd - Interstellar Warner Bros.)

December:
13th - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.)
19th - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Paramount)
20th - Big Hero 6 [Baymax] (Disney)

I didn't include releases from Korea, Italy, or Germany since I'm unfamiliar with those markets, and don't really know which ones could perform well in the market.

Mr. Peabody & Sherman was recently announced for Nov. 1st, making it the first theatrical release for Dreamworks Animation since Madagascar 3, but no distributor has been announced. I'm thinking it's just for one day (or week) only at a few locations or something though (kinda like Rio).

November/December are pretty barren of imported releases this year. A lot of notable films were pushed back to 2015 (such as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, Night at the Museum 3, Annie, Big Eyes, Into the Woods, Exodus, and Sin City 2). How to Train Your Dragon 2 is also rumored for February 2015, but it hasn't been confirmed.

Notes:

>Maleficent is catching up to The Chronicles of Narnia after Obon Week, but it could begin to drop off fast post-holidays and having been in release for awhile now. I doubt it beats Narnia, but it's not impossible.

>Marnie is now tracking farther behind Wolf Children and Poppy Hill than it should be after 5 weeks. It won't be able to catch up now, but it may still have a chance at reaching ¥4 billion ($40 million).

>Pokemon XY has had pretty amazing legs, especially in the face of Doraemon, Maleficent, and Marnie all targeting portions of the family audience, and actually looks like it could beat last year's film now. It's even begun to close the gap with 2012's release a bit. It's already approaching the normal final multiplier for the franchise, too, and will end up with some of the best legs in the entire franchise.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon is way ahead of Monsters University and Tales from Earthsea after 2 weeks, but it's largely thanks to Obon Week. The other two films got the Obon boost later in their runs, so let's see how they compare after 4/5 weeks to get a better idea of this showdown.

>Rurouni Kenshin 2 sees another huge week and is outpacing its comparisons after 3 weeks. I think it'll end up above Thermae Romae II, but Death Note 2 will be difficult since it benefited from New Year late in its run.

>Godzilla passes the lifetime total of King King after 4 weeks in release and won't be too far off the combined totals of it and Pacific Rim. These probably weren't fair comparisons, but choices were limited.

>Transformers 4 ties Transformers 3 for the highest 2-week total in the franchise, but that's just because it had Obon Week during its second week. Obon Week occurred during Transformers 3's (and the first film) third weeks.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Week (Weekend Ranking)
Weekend Ranking (08/16-17)

01 (01) Stand By Me, Doraemon (Toho) Week 2
02 (--) Hot Road (Shochiku) DEBUT
03 (03) Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Warner Bros.) Week 3
04 (02) Transformers: Age of Extinction (Paramount) Week 2
05 (04) Maleficent (Disney) Week 7
06 (06) Memories of Marnie (Toho) Week 5
07 (05) Godzilla (Toho) Week 4
08 (07) Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Toho) Week 5
09 (09) Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Toei) Week 5
10 (08) Space Brothers 0 (Warner Bros.) Week 2

Stand By Me, Doraemon easily defended its #1 position and delivered the second strongest 2nd weekend of the year. The film dropped just 9% in its second weekend, earning a huge ¥701,619,400 ($6.9 million) and 502,607 admissions.

The film already had the biggest opening weekend in the franchise, but its second weekend also beats the opening weekend of any previous Doraemon film! Its 10-day total is up to ¥3.27 billion ($32.1 million) with 2.45 million admissions, which gives it the biggest 2-week total of the year, and it'll outgross every other traditional Doraemon film soon.

I'm thinking a total around ¥7-8 billion ($70-80 million) now is reasonable. Insane.

>Hot Road got off to a big start taking in ¥389,242,000 ($3.8 million) with 284,367 admissions on 302 screens. This makes it distributor Shochiku's third highest opener ever, and their biggest in 5 years. It should be aiming for a total of ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million).

>Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc held strong in its third weekend, grossing ¥361,186,200 ($3.5 million) with 263,972 admissions. After 17-days in release, it's earned a very impressive ¥3.19 billion ($31.2 million) with 2.47 admissions. It's surpassed the total of the first film already, and also Gravity, making it Warner Bros. highest-grossing film since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2!

It still has quite a bit left to make, too, and could gross as much as 4.5 billion ($45 million).

>Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie exceeded 2 million admissions over the weekend, bringing its 30-day total above ¥2.3 billion ($22.6 million). It continues to stay ahead of last year's film despite having one of the lowest openings in the franchise.

>Godzilla is still hanging in there and exceeded ¥2.6 billion ($25.5 million+) after four weeks in release. It's still looking good for ¥3 billion ($30 million+), it might even get close to 3.5 billion ($35 million).

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Weekend Admissions (08/16-17)
180,566 (-10%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Week 2)
109,273 (NEW) - Hot Road (NEW)
88,613 (-20%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 3)
78,219 (-33%) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Week 2)
48,666 (-05%) - Maleficent (Week 7)
43,749 (-05%) - Godzilla (Week 4)
43,409 (-03%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 5)
28,517 (-22%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 5)
11,628 (+01%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 4)
7,900 (-29%) - Kamen Rider Gaim the Movie: The Great Soccer Match! (Week 5)

>Stand By Me, Doraemon has a strong second weekend that should be between ¥650-700 million ($6.5-7 million) and 450-500,000 admissions. And using the rough estimates from Monday-Friday, it's 10-day total should come in between ¥3.1-3.3 billion ($30-32 million) and 2.3-2.5 million admissions, the highest 2-week total so far this year (which is unlikely to change).

>Hot Road performed really well, and actually didn't drop too much on Sunday despite Saturday's stage greetings. Normally, a film that opens with stage greetings tends to see very harsh drops the next day. It's opening weekend will probably land between ¥300-350 million and 250-300,000 admissions.

The stage greetings, as well as the genre, will result in a low avg. ticket price, so while it probably ranked 2nd in admissions over the weekend, both Rurouni Kenshin 2 and Transformers 4 make the battle for 2nd in gross close.

>And very notable holds for Maleficent and Marnie once again, but also very strong for Godzilla, all looking at sub-10% drops. Godzilla's third weekend hold was concerning last week, but it's definitely recovered over the week.

I'll have full Weekend Estimates up later.

Toho, Movix, 109, Kinezo Cinema Chains Saturday Admissions (08/16)
93,059 (+04%) - Stand By Me, Doraemon (Week 2)
59,355 (NEW) - Hot Road (NEW)
48,664 (-04%) - Rurouni Kenshin: The Great Kyoto Fire Arc (Week 3)
43,138 (-26%) - Transformers: Age of Extinction (Week 2)
26,134 (+13%) - Maleficent (Week 7)
24,737 (+13%) - Godzilla (Week 4)
23,350 (+16%) - Memories of Marnie (Week 5)
14,459 (-10%) - Pokemon XY: The Cocoon of Destruction & Diancie (Week 5)
6,010 (+18%) - Eight Ranger 2 (Week 4)
4,055 (-59%) - Space Brothers 0 (Week 2)

Strong day. We could end up seeing a few weekend increases this week based on Saturday.

The change in % is from last Saturday, not yesterday (Friday), remember that whenever I post Saturday admissions. And also that the four chains posted represent approx. 40% of all screens in Japan.

>Stand By Me, Doraemon is up slightly over last Saturday and could be looking at a second weekend increase. It's probably more likely to see a small decrease since I don't think Sunday will be as strong as last week, but Saturday is strong enough that an increase is doable.

The fact that it could be closer to ¥3.5 billion ($35 million) than ¥3.0 billion ($30 million) after Sunday is incredible. And... its 2-week total is going to beat the totals of most annual Doraemon films. It's going to have one of the biggest 9/10-day (2-week) totals in a long time. I'll have a list up later today.

>Hot Road got off to a strong start thanks to its stage greetings. It's on track to be Shochiku's biggest opener of the year for sure.

>Transformers: Age of Extinction looks a bit frontloaded, but its really high ticket prices (high 3D share) will keep it doing respectable numbers. Rurouni Kenshin 2 will probably beat it over the weekend, though, changing ranks from last weekend.

And the week keeps growing. Massive Thursday. Everything except for Maleficent, Marnie, and Pokemon (all of which are about even with Wednesday's admissions) managed to increase over Wednesday's admissions, which is very impressive.

And overall, Thursday was much stronger than this past Saturday and looks on par, if not greater than, Sunday, too.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Obon Week (Charts Updated)
Thursday is looking to be the biggest day of Obon Week so far. Thursday admissions will probably trail Wednesday since that's ladies' day (women get half-off), but being a regular day should place it above Wednesday in gross.

Looking at the current admissions... Thursday might actually match Wednesdays admissions, honestly, which would be pretty nuts. It's really rare for a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday to beat Wednesdays admissions due to Ladies' Day (usually just occurs with films that skew heavily male).

>Stand By Me, Doraemon is nearing Monday and Tuesdays admissions with over half the day to go. If it comes close to Wednesdays admissions, it could be targeting a ¥400 million ($4 million) day. That would certainly be one of the strongest weekday grosses in quite some time (it would be a good opening weekend gross for most films!).

>Rurouni Kenshin 2 and Transformers 4 remain close in their second place battle and will both beat their Monday and Tuesday numbers comfortably. Kenshin was really strong yesterday (strong female audience), so it'll probably come in lower than Wednesday, but Transformers is on track to beat its Wednesday admissions.

>Pokemon XY has already surpassed both Monday and Tuesdays admissions before 2PM and is going to come close to Wednesdays admissions.

>Marnie, Maleficent, and Godzilla are also nearing Mondays and Tuesdays admissions with half the day remaining (Godzilla is very close to surpassing Monday/Tuesday). Marnie and Maleficent are the two most-likely to fall below Wednesday since they've been skewing heavily towards females.
