Universal reported that Mario crossed $100M (¥13.74B) on Tuesday, with $100.1M. Mario overtakes Top Gun: Maverick as the No. 6 Hollywood film of all time in Japan, and is the No. 1 studio picture since the beginning of the pandemic.

% change vs same day last week.
Expected bump on Wednesday since Tuesday was deflated from the typhoon. This will likely be the last big day we see for the Obon Festival holiday period this year. Thursday will still be much stronger than usual and everything will be up vs last week again, but they'll probably dip closer to Tuesday's numbers.
Very good day for Elemental, which cannastop mentioned above. I do believe this is its biggest day in release so far in admissions, and might be in revenue too.
And MI7's running total (as well as its Mon/Tues estimate) has been adjusted slightly upward to reflect the actual total released for it on Tuesday.
Note to those thinking the numbers might have been just slightly higher, remember Wednesdays are Toho Cinemas Day, so admissions are skewed more toward the locations tracked at mimorin, and this also lowers the avg. ticket price a little (I usually take off 2-3%). So, ¥175/180m for Kingdom III, for example, will probably be more like ¥170m.

PAW PATROL? That's really getting the 3rd most seats?
EDIT
I think Paw Patrol might ONLY be playing at the AEON chain in Japan though. Don't see it at any other chain.
EDIT
Also this is NOT the upcoming new Paw Patrol movie. it's an hour long tv special kind of... I don't even know. A lot of Paw Patrol movies (or specials/OVAs?) get released in Japan, and Aeon Cinemas is the chain that gives them the vast majority of their screens. Same is true for a lot of other very young skewing films like Thomas the Tank Engine, Shimajiro, and more. Aeon Cinemas are mostly in malls or shopping areas, so they see a lot more family traffic than the other chains, so younger-skewing films (especially much younger, like daycare and elementary aged children) perform better (on average) at their theaters.

I understand 100 theaters as being small release and a 100M yen is the success line for that. But not 200 or 300. I would say expectations are on a case-by-case basis. If a film is releasing on 300+ theaters in July or August, yeah, I'd say the studio expects a certain level of profit. If they release a film in 300+ theaters in a month like June or October, there's probably lower expectations there. (This is just when discussing your regular releases, not something they know is either likely to do big numbers or likely to do small numbers). If a film gets over 350 theaters, especially up near that ceiling of 380/385 or so (excluding premium locations), then this is more solidly yes. A film isn't going to get around the max number of theaters without the studio expecting something out of it.

Looks like Elemental will have its most attended day so far on Wednesday. Maybe not the highest yen gross day. But it will probably beat its personal record.

Also makes sense a movie based on a one shot manga that is almost 25 years old isn't a hot movie at the box office

Helps that nothing right now is doing huge business. A bunch of films are doing good business, but there's a good amount of screens/seating that can be taken from them in the hopes the next big release can make better use of them. (And Barbie clearly doesn't need as many seats as it has, so I imagine it'll be losing a ton this weekend.) So, that's what is happening here.
Of course... this doesn't always work out, cutting into holdovers for a new release, and it probably won't here. Should have probably just kept Kingdom III and the others with their current allocations. Actually, MI7 needs some more seating. It's hitting the highest capacity over Obon Festival, so giving it some more would be nice. I was more just referring to how hard they've gone for Sand Land as a whole, film, console game etc. etc., and now I guess this thing's getting blockbuster release treatment even though those shows look like ghost towns rn to me, just feels really bizarre to go so hard on a decades old oneshot to me

% change vs same day last week.
Around ~13% of theaters were closed on Tuesday due to the typhoon that came through, but even with that, the day itself was quite good. Deflated some, of course, but couldn't have been much better, IMO. I expect Wednesday to see a solid bump.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival 2023 (Daily Estimates)
Thanks for the easy reference to the weekends / totals for these films, Kanroji. Going back dozens and dozens of pages to find them can be frustrating. :haha:
Going to post Tuesday's estimates soon. I'll try to get around to posting the weekend actuals and 2023 chart updates later today too, but that may have to wait until Wednesday.

I wonder if Oppenheimer will ever see the light of day at the IMAX theaters in Grand Cinema Sunshine or Osaka Expocity. They're GT IMAX theaters. Maybe Oppenheimer can't play to a wide audience in Japan but it could play for a little bit there.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Obon Festival 2023 (Daily Estimates)
Very happy with the Tuesday result for Elemental. Of course I'm rooting for it. Probably #2 for amount of tickets sold, but maybe #3 or #4 for yen gross.
Excited to see what Wednesday will bring especially if the Osaka theaters are open then.

cannastop wrote: Looks like Osaka-area cinemas are closed this Tuesday. I don't know if that was reflected in Mimorin's data or not. It's fine. A lot of places closed in/around Osaka today as a precaution for the typhoon, so that will have an impact on the box-office, but not a major one. So far, it looks like we're going to see increases mostly across the board again versus last week despite the typhoon. Need to see what the afternoon/evening sales look like to be sure though. Tuesday is still going to be deflated, but not significantly and we'll likely see an inflated Wednesday at a result. It truly takes a hell of a storm/disaster (or pandemic) to have a major impact on Japan's box office. Even the Great Tohoku Earthquake of 2011, which did significantly impact the box office, only kept numbers down for a couple of weeks. And the box office largely recovered from the pandemic come Fall 2020 (even got the biggest film of all time that year). It's a super resilient market.

I just remember checking out the news in 2011 and seeing the Yen was 76 for $1. Wondered how strong it could be.
Now it's 145 yen for $1. How the turn tables.

Yen is weak not just because of delta with US Int rates but Japan exports have weakened significantly in past few years. They used to be leaders in electronics and autos but have been surpassed in all those segments. FYI - https://www.ft.com/content/e80565a1-9f3 ... ec2c43d288
