Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Silver Week 2022; OP Exceeds ¥15 Billo
I'm feeling mildly optimistic about it. I, too, have doubts it can match the original (JPY/Admissions), but wouldn't be shocked if it does or at least comes somewhat close.

If it does decline by a notable margin, then yeah, the USD total is going to really suck and be tremendously down versus the original. A fair 15% decline in JPY would be about a 46% decline in USD (down $75-80 million...). For those wondering, to match the original in USD, it needs to increase a ridiculous 55-60% in JPY.

**********

I shaved off 5,000 admissions from Friday to account for the preliminary admissions update of 11.26 million (I had 11.27 million).

It was #1 for its eighth consecutive weekend, and depending on what the re-release of Avatar did this weekend, it's now the 11th Highest Grossing Film of All-Time.

Avatar debuted in 9th place this weekend in admissions (probably 8th in revenue), and would have needed to earn over ¥100 million in its first three days. I haven't seen any numbers reported for it yet, but I have it right around ¥100 million, so we'll need to wait and see when actuals for both come in later.

If the re-release was enough to keep Avatar in the 11th spot on the All-Time Chart as of Sunday, though, One Piece will have overtaken it on Monday.

A friend of mine told me official reporting is saying total gross is approaching 15.7b meaning it should be below it as of Sunday. Actuals will confirm if that is the case soon I guess.

Yeah, it's ¥15.696 billion. I'll update it (and Monday's estimate) when the actuals and admissions come out later this evening. Looks like Friday was a decent bit lower than originally estimated, or the ATP has dropped a good bit again. Tuesday and/or Wednesday could be, too, but they wouldn't be off that much.

But it's also being reported as the 11th Highest Grossing Film of All-Time now, too. So, either Avatar earned less than ¥96 million over the three day (possible), or it's being counted separately for the time being. Sometimes re-release figures aren't added to the original gross until after the run. Thankfully, Avatar's re-release is only for 2-weeks, so if it's added, we shouldn't have to wait until the end of the year.

While I'm on, One Piece has some special live screenings on October 1st, so Saturday (already a discount day) could be up versus this week.

I just heard of this, and I'm going to assume it's Uta/Ado performing some of the songs live before/after a screening somewhere. I haven't looked into them yet to know how widespread this is (like, is it being broadcast nationwide before/after a specific showtime in theaters like the stage greetings, for example), but it'll be something to look into/watch.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing about whether Avatar was low or just not included yet too. The ATP *should* be really high, considering it was 3D only and I think from what I've seen pretty much all premium shows too. But since it is very limited it could be that it really underperformed on rural areas.

Either way, even if it was just not counted, it's not that big of a deal I guess, OPR would've beaten it a day or too later regardless.

Avatar (re-release) earned ¥101,073,100 ($702,000) on 45,448 admissions over the three-day. It was 3D exclusive, right? If so, its avg. ticket price (¥2,224) matches the general ticket price (¥1,900) + 3D surcharge (¥300) almost exactly (¥2,200), so seems very, very few kids/students/seniors were in attendance (they pay ¥1,500 for a general ticket, or ¥1,800 for 3D).

So, if that's added to the original total, it'd still be the 11th highest grossing film as of Sunday, but as you mentioned, pretty moot point since One Piece overtook it on Monday regardless of it holding on for one extra day.

The re-release has been counted separately from the original film, so for the time being, the all-time chart will still just include the original gross. But note, the recent re-releases (2020 had a lot) were also counted separately before they were eventually added to the original totals.

Note: Populations are yearly averages from the UN; estimates can slightly vary.

Using the July population estimate for One Piece, but it'll be a bit lower in the end (maybe like... 123.6 million or so). Unfortunately, the population decline is accelerating beyond the already dismal projections. <120 million is looking more likely by 2030 (some are estimating closer to 115 million), and <100 million is possible by 2050 (some estimating a few year earlier) now.

Does lower general population means lower cinema-goer population? Because some type of population can be stable, or even increase, even when the general population decrease.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (09/24-25); Charts Update
I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. We've already begun to see the impact it's had on young/family skewing films. Yo-Kai Watch died a quick death (its audience literally grew up and wasn't replaced), Pokémon stopped making films, Kamen Rider has seen a big drop off, and Doraemon has seen a rather sharp decline. And Disney is doing very, very poorly in the market now, too.

So, based on that, the future looks bleak for films with strong younger/family appeal as those demographics are declining the fastest.

If I had to guess on the overall impact, I'd think more specific event films will still thrive (like One Piece, TGM, JJK0, etc.), but it'll be a little harder for mid-sized films to reach blockbuster status and smaller films to find success with a shrinking audience.

Finally updated! Sorry this took a couple days to get to. Last week's dailies (09/21-23) have been adjusted to account for the difference with the actuals as of 09/25. And this week's (09/26-28) daily estimates have been added.

There's also a lot happening on October 1st with the film, which I'll share in a separate post later.

So this One Piece news happening on October 1st, this Saturday. First, it's a discount day, so that's already a bonus on a weekend, but even more so, there are two major events happening, in addition to a exclusive item that will only be available in theaters, that is likely to produce a weekend increase:

The first major event is the 5th giveaway. It consists of a card that'll grant access to three different excusive digital items. Limited to 500,000 copies.

The second major event is a Uta event on Saturday, which happens to be the character's birthday. They'll be a stage event with a limited Uta Happy Birthday card giveaway for attendees, and this event will be broadcast nationwide in theaters.

Lastly, there is an exclusive plush hat that will be on sale in theaters on October 1st and ONLY in theaters. It will NOT be made available for purchase online or in stores, meaning the biggest fans could turn out to see the movie again and buy this item.

Toei is really pushing to reach ¥20 billion. Glad to see it.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top Grossing Films 2022
Top Grossing Films: 2022
Gross ¥ ($) / Admissions [Days In Release] - Film (Distributor)

¥6.20 billion ($45.9 million) / 4.16 million [59] - Jurassic World: Dominion (Toho-Towa)

Unless I'm missing something, wouldn't this gross put it into the top 125 since it would fall between these two films?

Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time

124. ¥6.22 billion ($21.3 million) - The Towering Inferno (1975)
125. ¥6.17 billion ($41.4 million) - Phantom of the Opera (1990)[/size]

Obviously I bet a film will supplant it in the top 125 pretty soon anyhow but as a technicality.

Not really impressed with sat's PS considering giveaway+discount day and even a special showing so far, we'll see if it fills up more with friday I guess. Could very well be that the digital items aren't considered appealing for a giveaway though, but it's understandable to go with a cheaper gift this time considering the previous 2 were pretty expensive giveaways.

They look decent/good to me at this point (granted, I'm checking 12+ hours after you). I don't see some huge increase, but a reasonable one should be expected, IMO.
