I'd have thought more actuals would be out by now.

Most don't come out until Tuesday morning in Japan. You usually get the actuals for the top two or three films, and maybe one or two more (like if third place was big enough debut), but the rest are the approx. actuals (rounded) that are shared for news outlets to report on Monday.

>Top Gun: Maverick held off the first batch of July openers, including Disney/Pixar's first real animated theatrical release since 2019. It had to give up quite a few seats to the openers, so it experienced its worst hold to date, but a 23% decline is certainly still impressive. It sold 235,677 admissions over its sixth weekend, bringing its overall admissions up to 4,876,249 admissions. Its quest to ¥10 billion remains undetermined, however, as we really need to see what happens on the July 15th weekend where it could be subject to severe screen/showtime cuts. I'd say it's at least still 50/50, which will improve if it manages a sub-20% hold this upcoming weekend, and less than 35% on the July 15th weekend.

>Lightyear debuts in second place, selling 205,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 750 screens, and 266,727 admissions over its first three-days of release. A little better than expected going into the weekend, but about half of what a standard Pixar film does in the market, so this certainly wasn't the result Disney was looking for. This start will be enough to get it to the ¥2 billion milestone, giving Disney their second (...) film since 2019 to get there, but again, this is about half of a standard performance and is going to keep Disney without a hit in the market for another year (third-consecutive now).

>Yuru Camp surprised in third place, coming in higher than I believe many were expecting. I haven't seen its weekend admissions at the regular sources (will estimate using its three-day avg. ticket price), but it sold 251,000 admissions over its first three-days on just 121 screens. This opening should get it above ¥1 billion, which is a nice way for Shochiku, which had an impressive first half of 2022, to continue their success into the second half of the year.

>Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero held pretty well following its 4DX/MX4D (giveaway) expansion. Post-expansion/giveaway weekends can sometimes see big declines, so this isn't too bad. Its admissions after four weeks in release are up to 1.40 million (oddly, this film hasn't been reported in bunkatsushin, so admissions have remained rounded). Look for a finish around ¥2.5 billion.

>Elvis rounded out the Top 5, but disappointed. I wasn't expecting anything big here, but Japanese audiences have been receptive of these musical biopics and/or documentaries, so figured it'd do better than this. Maybe Elvis wasn't a particularly big act, at least compared to Michael Jackson or Queen in the market. It sold 113,794 admissions over the weekend on 407 screens.

>Shin Ultraman will overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home to crack the Top 5 of 2022 this week (should have on Monday). Its admissions after eight weeks are up to 2,793,805.

>The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie enjoyed the best hold in the Top 10 and has positioned itself up to exceed the ¥2 billion milestone. This has been a huge hit for Pony Canyon, and I don't recall their last film to gross this much. I don't believe it's their first film to hit ¥2 billion, but it's certainly one of few.

>And lastly, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween manages to hold onto 10th place once again this weekend despite three new openers. Its late-legs have been quite impressive, and it's guaranteed to outgross Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer to become the second-highest grossing film in the franchise now (it's been very likely, but this weekend makes it 99.9+%). Its twelve week admissions are up to 6,534,530.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Top 100 Grossing Films
Since the last update:

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween exceeded ¥9 billion and enters the Top 60 (57th). It'll surpass three or four more films on the chart.

Top Gun: Maverick enters the Top 100 (84th) after its sixth week, meaning there is only one film in the Top 100 that is below ¥7 billion now. It should certainly crack the Top 50, and if it holds well enough over the next two weeks (July 15th, especially), it has a strong chance of hitting the Top 40 and becoming the 40th film to reach ¥10 billion.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Most Attended Films
Since the last update:

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween exceeded 6 million (and 6.5 million) to crack the Top 70 (69th). Should add another 100,000 or so (to reach ~6.63 million, or maybe a tad more) before it finishes.

Top Gun: Maverick hasn't reached 5 million yet (4.89 million after six weeks), but should hit the mark this Wednesday to enter the chart. I'd expect at least 6 million admissions, but could do ~6.5-7 million.

¥500M - Thor (2011)
¥635M - Thor: The Dark World (2014)
¥1.15B - Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Marvel Phase IV

_¥949.42M - Black Widow
_¥964.76M - Shang-Chi: The Legend of 10 Rings
¥1200.36M - Eternals

I'm estimating that Top Gun: Maverick missed this chart, experiencing its worst weekend hold to date (still a good though), likely due to losing over a third of its seating to the new openers. An uptick with actuals could get it there, but I would be surprised.

Upstick looks difficult because of Thor opening next Weekend ????. After that Minion/Kingdom gonna take a lot of oxygen from it...... {{{(>_<)}}}

Okay finally a good movie to encounter Thor Opening
Spoiler: show

Well, Thor isn't going to do much and isn't competition outside of taking seats/premiums showings, and won't even debut at #1 (even #2 is in question). The MCU films are relatively niche and largely rely on the same audience with the vast majority of their non-Avengers/Spider-Man releases.

It is cool they're doing another giveaway for Top Gun, though. I don't know if stickers will exactly drive a lot of repeats, but if it helps bring back however many more thousand fans to see it again for them, then cool, as it could be the difference in its quest for ¥10 billion. And more importantly, I believe this shows Towa Pictures' desire to get it to that milestone because there's really no reason for this besides that I feel. So, if it gets to like ¥9.5 billion+ and is still doing decent numbers, but not enough to get to ¥10 billion, they'll likely do another giveaway or event to push it there.

I'll update Free!'s updated actual in the next update.

I'll be on vacation from 7/8-18. The latter portion will be off-grid (no internet) at Starwood Festival, so I won't be around to respond to answer questions or comment during what will likely be a very busy holiday weekend (7/15-18) at the box-office. But I'll update all the charts and such a day or two after returning.

I've love to spend a July or August in Germany in the future. You guys have so many metal festivals (and even border countries with many notables, too!), it's unfair for the rest of the world (in fact, I think Germany has more than any country).

Kazuki Takahashi, creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!, was found dead off the coast of Okinawa in snorkeling gear on Wednesday. He was 60.

Pretty stunning. Going to assume an accident with his gear for the time being.

I was into Yu-Gi-Oh! for several years growing up, and I believe many who grew up in the early/mid-2000s were at least aware of it. And it's continued to remain pretty relevant to this day, too, with regular updates to the manga, video games, anime, etc. I know the TCG is still very popular, only behind Magic and Pokemon in sales (may best one or both in some countries).

RIP. What a sad way to go. Sounds like it was an accident.
