Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
By the time he finishes this, anyone that remembers seeing the first will be dead, and Avatwo will be fresh for a new generation. It could top a billion domestically.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
A lot of original star-crossed love stories have hit very big. It's one of the most bankable themes out there. But how many times do you see those stories translate well into sequels?
We don't really care all that much about what the love birds do after the credits roll. In the case of Avatar, how many people can even remember their names? Nobody has talked about Avatar in 6 years unless the conversation is about 3D or box office.
The sequel will have to bank on tech and good will, but a whole different story. It will have to get really interesting really fast. Cameron will do that, but has to essentially make a different movie only in the world of Avatar.

Jake Sully and ... yeah I've forgotten the chick's name. Is it Na'vi? No. That's the race of people. I really cannot remember the chick.

I don't see why he couldn't repeat that kind of success in Avatar's first sequel. The bigger challenge will be to sustain it for three more movies.

Yeah it's always good to exercise caution when questioning Cameron's ability to make box office. Those sequels are good examples, however with those he was still establishing himself and building a name, whereas with Avatar he was hugely cashing in on that name and brand. Not that Avatar diminished it, but there's simply a lot more room to go down than up this time around. I feel like with Avatar he was much more crafting a stand-alone box office hit than building a universe. I look forward to having my doubts squashed but without further info I'd have to go with 500-600m total for now.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
I do see it decreasing as well but the inflation has increased. SW7 has shown that December can have huge openings as well. I believe it will come very close to the original's total (like $650m-$700m) if it is just mediocre but if it delivers a spectacle like T2 or Aliens then I could see it challenging SW7's BO reign. Regardless I cannot see those sub-$400m holding true unless it is Piranha 2 level of debacle.

No. Inflation is always a movement upwards. So the joke works. It isn't even anything to do with inflation rates. All Sparrow was saying was that since Avatar came out there has been inflation (tickets cost more). He wasn't saying that "omg, THIS year the inflation has increased at such a rate that a sequel is bound to make the same". So fuck you, little prick.

Inflation does not tend to increase (as your wording also suggests just like Sparrow's, though his also suggests inflation can decrease) or decrease as it's only a notion of a movement in economics that is indeed defined by an increase in general price of various goods and/or services, but to say inflation increases or tends to is wrong. For someone who is anal about everything all the time, it's funny to see you wiggling now. LOL.

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Inflation is an expansion of the currency supply. Price inflation is when currency inflation is combined with increased currency velocity. Inflation does tend to increase, but not naturally - it's because the central banks tend to do everything they can to make sure it does.
BUT, I recommend not discussing causes of inflation in these threads. See my thread about What will it take to beat Star Wars: The Force Awakens, for an example of how quickly it goes off the rails.
People get ridiculously nasty. I had a lengthy exchange on FB trying to explain basic macroeconomic concepts to one of my "friends". He proved he simply couldn't NOT be an asshole about it.

I have a feeling that AVATAR 2 will now open Christmas 2020 once the new STAR WARS trilogy is concluded...

Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
Winds of Winter will beat Avatar 2
The decades that Cameron will have spent on the Avatar series compared to making a great blockbuster every 3 or 4 years if he never had the idea, just to make aliens Dances with Wolves, is quite sad
