Yeah I think we all knew it wouldn't be out next year. 2017 needs it more so all the better. Should aim for a summer release date though. Unless SW Ep 8 isn't out that December.

My first thought is they're seemingly avoiding a direct confrontation with mainline Star Wars titles with those release dates.

My second is Cameron will be nothing but a skeleton by 2023.

Look at the toll avengers and BvS took on Whedon and Snyder. Peter Jackson looked sickly after The Hobbit. These kind of films can be awfully stressfu to make and Cameron is going to be working basically non-stop for the next 7 years.

Peter Jackson lost weight and Tried to be healthy. And I hate those movie outside the first.

Camera took 8 years for his terminator sequal.

That's a good point. But I can imagine he'll already have done a fair bit during the almost one-decade long interval between Avatar and Avatar 2.

I don't see any interest for one Avatar sequel, let alone FOUR!!!

These could be the biggest disappointments in box office history.

So Fox has set a release date for an "Untitled Lightstorm production" for 12/21/18...

I wonder, why they didn't fly with "Untitled Avatar sequel"...

Anyway, should be a busy opening week...

Honestly, sub $400M domestic wouldn't surprise anymore. The 3D craze has died down considerably since 2009 and we are now living in a market saturated with superhero movies. Also, Star Wars is back stronger than ever and I believe one of the reasons the first movie was so successful is because it fulfilled that need that people wanted a different kind of EVENT, blockbuster film that hasn't really been done since the original SW trilogy.

I'm fairly sure Avatar WAS the 3D craze. Avatar 2 has the potential to do the same, start a craze.

It fulfilled exactly what Titanic did 10 years prior.

I am not betting against Cameron. He brings out the people who would otherwise not go to theaters. All he needs is a decent WoM and I am sure he would get that.

Under other circumstances I'd agree with the lower predictions. But this is Cameron. I have no reason to doubt his ability to find a new way to wow audiences.

Post Re: Avatar 2 Predictions
The 3D craze died down because almost all movies just have 3D tacked on, making it feel like all you're really getting are inflated prices. With Avatar, the 3D felt like an experience, because the movie was made for/filmed in 3D instead of just having it tacked on. If Avatar 2 can recapture that experience and give people a reason to go back to the cinema for it, it shouldn't decrease too much from the first, maybe even increase thanks to inflation.
