Why the 20-something million openings for Interpreter? Its genre fits in more with Manchurian Candidate and Assault of 13th Precinct which dont normally have high numbers so I dont really understand the high predictions for that movie trailer gets no reaction at all. If Manchurian could even open to 20 million during the summer, I highly doubt a much less profile Kidman movie will do it

Oscar winners dont equal box office draws dude!. Manchurian candidate has 2 oscar draws but didnt open to more than 20 million. If every oscar winner equals box office winners, Marisa Tomei will be making 20 million dollars

Actually, The Manchurian Candidate had four Oscar winners:

Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Jon Voight and Jonathan Demme.

All movies:

Opening: $22.2M
Final: $72.2M

But really, this looks like the strongest April I've seen in a while. Do you agree?

I know that. But Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman, and including its plot, are much bigger draws than Denzel or Meryl.

What bizarro world do you live in where Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman are a bigger draw than Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep and Johnathan Demme directing?

Stars don't make box office hits. I hope everyone knows that by now.

But, The Interpreter is heavily marketed. It's trailer is attached to every movie I've seen in the past 2 months. It's gotten great reactions. It's also one of the main adult-type mystery movies in a while. The Manchurian Candidate came out in a heavily competitive time, when it should have come out during the month of April to reach it's full potential, in my opinion.

Agreed, it's been getting a huge number of spots on movies I've been seeing, it appeals to both teenagers and adults, and the plot looks much easier to understand and action packed then Manchurian Canidate, which I personally predicted would underperform thanks to such weird ads that only had a slight money shot... in night vision.

Look at the genre of the movies which belongs with Negotiator,Peacemaker, and Proof of Life. They all grossed under 50 million dollars. Thats why I have doubts about it opening at 20 million or over. This movie is going to be very overpredicted

Exactly what genre is that? The adult R rated thriller? Because last year's Man on Fire belongs in that category just as much as The Peacemaker does. It deals with terrorism, which has been a mighty profitable genre. In the Line of Fire is Clint Eastwood's highest grossing movie, Spy Game opened over 20 million, as did any of the Jack Ryan movies. Not all those movies are similar to The Interpreter entirely, but I don't think any of the examples you listed are any moreso then they are.

The Manchurian Candidate opening weekend gross: $20,018,620

Don't mean to be nitpicky, but that technically qualifies as a $20M opening.

Plus, it was opening against The Village, of course it wasn't going to be huge. Collateral being second weekend just made it get lost in the shuffle in my opinion.
