Most films are over-estimated. I guess there really wasn't a Valentine effect on Sunday.

It was obvious to me after seeing the estimates that Hitch would only make about this amount. I mean haven't we all learned by now that when a major release comes out the studios will fudge the numbers to get some threshold they want, like bump it up to 45 or 50 when it's really a million or two less. They just want that number on the news I guess.

A $43M opening is still no less impressive than a $45M opening. Well done, Mr. Smith.

Whoda tought?

Hitch would have a chance at making as much as I, Robot
Boogeyman wouldn't drop 50% in its second weekend
Are We There Yet? would fail to drop over 40% for the third weekend in a row
The Wedding Date WOULD drop 50% in its second weekend
Hide and Seek would have a shot at $60 million
The Aviator and Meet the Fockers would be in the top 10 after 8 weeks
Sideways would ever cross $50m
National Treasure would ever come CLOSE to $170m.

I would never have guessed the above.

Uncle Nino -- $165,000 (189 theaters) $873 per theater (average)

Not good.

Those three are not really suprising IMO. The first because of the Super Bowl, the second because its a family film without competition, and the third because the Oscar buzz was expected.

But there are some big suprises there. Even I only predicted 120m for National Treasure before it was released.

Both MDB and Aviator are performing like crap and I can't believe that MDB STILL can't manage to get to #2 over a cheesy PG-13 Horror movie like Boogeyman..

Oscar films don't tend to have massive weekends leading up to the awards, but they hold up extremely well and it adds up.

I guess will find out after the Oscars cause I don't think it's gonna matter 1 way or another.. If it were gonna jump up the chart and increase in it's weekend box office, it would've done it by now.. Hell, even ROTK didn't increase all that much after it won last year, but then again, m,ost people were burned out on the whole LOTR Fiasco..

Going down the list, that is a surprisingly high PTA for National Lampoon's Blackball (I thought the PTA would be below 1000). And there is an increase for Aliens Imax movie, great for them.
