 Sideways Box-Office Thread - current gross - $71,448,612
Well, this looks to become this year's best-reviewed movie. The universal acclaim it is getting from critics is very rare. The movie is to be found on almost every critic's TOP 10 list of the year. Sideways is winning awards left and right and is a sure bet for a Best Picture nomination this year. Sideways stands at 97% at RT and almost all reviewers are raving over it.
Sideways is Alexander Payne's 3rd highly acclaimed movie in a row, after Election and About Schmidt. None of those movies, however, received nearly as much praise as Sideways. It is interesting to see how the award buzz and the praising from the reviewers as well as the very good WoM will affect this movie's box-office performance.
Here is the movie's run so far:
Weekend - Weekend gross - % Change - Theatres - (PTA) - Total gross
Weekend 1 - $207,042 - NEW - 4 - ($51,760) - $207,042
Weekend 2 - $404,605 - +95.4% - 16 - ($25,287) - $710,076
Weekend 3 - $1,047,607 - +159% - 66 - ($15,872) - $1,917,590
Weekend 4 - $1,414,773 - +35.0% - 144 - ($9,824) - $3,751,301
Weekend 5 - $1,828,760 - +29.3% - 279 - ($6,554) - $6,039,004
Weekend 6 - $2,912,836 - +59.3% - 497 - ($5,860) - $9,950,066
Weekend 7 - $1,802,826 - -38.1% - 499 - ($3,612) - $12,478,931
Weekend 8 - $1,240,534 - -31.2% - 475 - ($2,611) - $14,273,198
Weekend 9 - $1,502,800 - +21.1% - 424 ($3,544) - $16,511,317
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems to me almost like if Fox Searchlight is trying to drop the ball on this movie lately. Despuite the great acclaim and all the awards and despite the fact that the movie rose last weekend, even though it lost theatres, it still keeps losing theatres. This weekend, it'll be only in 356 theatres. I cannot really understand this strategy. The PTA of the movie is very steady and it is getting the acclaim it needs and yet the studio has yet to expand it in over 500 theatres.
I do think, though, that Sideways will go wider in January, especially after the announcement of the oscar nominations. I see this movie becoming this year's Lost in Translation. As for its box-office I see a total gross of $40+ million at least.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Predict Sideways' Total gross!
DEADLINE: Saturday, January 8th
The winner will be proclaimed by the end of the movie's run.

Apparently it is going wide on Jan 28 to capitalize on oscar nominations. They shouldn't wait that long. The boost in awareness is already there.

I don't understand why they are waiting so long to finally start expanding. Despite the rather tough weekend and a theatre drop, Sideways still had the best drop in the TOP 20 last weekend and next weekend it'll pass $20 million. They should finally put it in 1,000+ theatres!

They might wait for the Academy nods in January. I actually expect a re-release of Finding Neverland soon after then as well. Perhaps into 500+ theaters, as it is starting to lose them now.

I agree. If Finding Neverland gets nominations it should get a rerelease.

Hopefully that will be enough to push it over $30 million. I would like to see it do more around $50 million, but that is unlikely at this point.

What do you all by re-release when it's still in 933 theaters. I don't expect it to drop below 500 theaters before the nominations. Also I'm less confident about its best picture nomination now. It may have peaked too soon with NBR, and Miramax hasn't done much in pushing the film. They are putting all the resources behind The Aviator.

All I hope that it'll stil have enough steam left once it's expanded. At the moment, I project a total of $50 million making it this year's Lost in Translation. It has the potential to do better, though.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, that was a great weekend for Sideways. It had the 2nd-biggest increase in the TOP 20 (without taking Beyond the Sea into account) and that despite just adding 11 theatres. Its PTA was its best since its 6th weekend and it is just amazing how it already made $22+ million without ever hitting 500 theatres. I should have good holds throughout January until its expansion to 1,000+ theatres on January 28th. It surely will receive over 5 Oscar noms which will help it immensly. I see this movie not only becoming this year's Lost in Translation, but even outgrossing that movie finishing probably north off $60 million.

I'm seeing a total around $50 million right now. It's seriously an amazing run, and if it were released better, it could have made quite a lot of money considering that it's one of the best reviewed movies of the year, if not the best.

Okay, I've got an idea, I'll let you all predict this movie's total gross and we'll see who'll be the closest in the end.
For when do you think shall I set the deadline?

After. So we can see if the big increase was luck or a sign for something.

Mystic River got another $35M after re-expanding to over 1000 theaters late January. There is more potential for Sideways since it was never released wide as Mystic River at the beginning, so $60M should be easily achievable. I'm thinking $75M.

I love, love, love that this great movie might be able to make it past $60M. The fact that it has made $22M despite never playing on more than 500 theatres is wonderful.
