Acclaimed director Tim Burton brings his vividly imaginative style to the beloved Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, about eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka (Depp) and Charlie, a good-hearted boy from a poor family who lives in the shadow of Wonka's extraordinary factory. Long isolated from his own family, Wonka launches a worldwide contest to select an heir to his candy empire.

The more i watch the teaser, the more and more i think this will be a damn good movie. it seems so creepy and dark... very Tim Burton-ish. With Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, this should rack up big numbers.

$57/$223

Well this will be heavily compared to Gene Wilder's performance and it's sort of hard not to since that is a Classic, but I still smell "Cat in The Hat" type of box office for this regardless of Burton or Depp who I think are great, but in the end, Nostalgia will rule out and hurt this movie..

Yeah, I know.. It does seem to be the holiday movie flop that rings to mind the most and I forgot what the film made.. It did break 100 Million didn't it?? Maybe I should use "The Grinch" more??

Yes, Cat in the Hat broke $100 million, barely. I'll have to check on the exact figures though.

The Grinch...a failure...?

Then that's what I predict for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as Lemony Snicket and not much over that above projection..

Ok. Your call. May I laugh when Lemony Snicket beats that? Likewise you may do the same if it doesn't.

Sure.. Why not.. I never claimed to be a box office expert, but I just see Lemony Snicket falling flat on it's face at the box office, holiday or not.. Honestly, it probably will do better over the holiday than I expect, but the only reason will be because moviegoers are hard up to see anything and will dump $$$ into regardless if it sucks or not.. I mean, what else is out??? Fat Albert??? I already see a DVD Relese date for that before it even hits theatres.. I'll  if DARKNESS somehow turns out to do actually good for a Christmas release which is suicide for the studio responsible for that.... Maybe they know something we don't???

I dunno, I'm actually surprised how well they've been marketing Darkness. This is Dimensions, the most notorious company for fucking up movie's ad campaigns and delaying them and releasing them in 150 theaters... and I've seen more ads for this then any other movie in the past few weeks. Something tells me it'll do slightly better then people expect ala Paycheck a year ago

Oh yeah, and that one movie the thread actually talks about, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Well I think the trailer looks seriously messed up and batshit, but at the same time there's something really cool about the style. I've shown it to a bunch of people, some of whom are very closeminded, and they all got very excited. The theater where I saw the trailer also had a pretty damn strong reaction. Tim Burton is pretty popular, as is Johnny Depp. He was the only reason that Secret Window and Once Upon A Time in Mexico did at all as well as they did. WB isn't great at marketing movies, though they seem to be better at kid's movies by and large. It has a fair amount of competition, but it's to be expected in summer. For now, I'd guess it has an opening slightly lower then Burton's other big summer remake this millenium, Planet of the Apes at 68 million, with maybe 60-62 million, but the legs should be much stronger as it has a wider demographic appeal and I'm assuming it's not considered as big a dissapointment as Apes was. I'd give it 61/205 for now, though the next trailer will probably change that.
