Post subject:  Predict The Interpreter (Kidman/Penn)

If there already is a thread about this, feel free to delete this one...

This thread is concerning next year's 'the Interpreter' with Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn.

when I first heard about it, it sounded intriguing.... two great actors in a great story! And now I finally learned more about it. I saw the trailer. and it's going more along the lines of thriller and suspense rather than Oscar-bait.

Nicole Kidman FINALLY looks appealing in a role that isn't so heavy on a transformation or a deep performance (though it's obvious she's still trying to give her best).
Sean Penn also breaks away from his always dark and broody characters...

It could play strong with audience attraction and break out.

I'm predicting $23 million opening with a $70 million finish
but I think it has potential to pass $100 million.

Trailer...

Nicole has some great stuff coming up, this is one of the three big pics she will unleash in the next year or so........the others being Bewitched and especially, The Producers........all movies i'm anticipating.....

Surely teaming up two of the leading actors/actresses in the business has to count for something.....and it does have one of the better premises of early 2005......and i totally agree with you on the darker, suspence like feel to the movie.....

I don't think a big United Nations movie has been done before and good political movies are few and far between.....

Maybe Manchurian Candidate type numbers with a Summer push mid-way through its run for solid legs....

Opening: $24m
Domestic: $80m

It looks really neat and Penn/Kidman will sure be able to attract some people. Besides that, their participation promises that the movie will also be good quality-wise which will help the movie's legs.

My early predictions:

Opening weekend - $19.8 million

Total gross - $71 million

I've heard a lot of talk about this one, I think that attracting both adults and teenagers was a smart move. I don't think it'll do as well as Man on Fire, but a comparison could be made. The PG-13 certainly helps. 20/68

$23M/$90M

minimal opening, fantastic legs. It has a great cast, awesome director, and a good story. I think it will be a big hit.

As we are approacing the release of the movie, I decided to raise my predictions slightly. The reviews seem to be good to great and the cast won't hurt either. It appears to be an old-style suspense thriller which is what most reviews are praising and that'll help the legs.

My revised predictions:

Opening weekend - $21.5 million

Total gross - $73 million

While the marketing isn't bad, I'm not sure if it has wide enough appeal.

Still, I think it'll perform much like The Score (2001), another thriller aimed at adults with a solid cast.

It's trailer is attached to a lot of movies, so the awareness is there. I think it's have a solid run.

Oh I see! That explains why I saw people getting up to go to the food vendors to get popcorn and soda, and heard some people catching up on their lack of sleep

As somone who isn't that much into BO, I am hoping that the movie will be better than the trailers indicate or even what the probably lackluster BO will be.

That's clearly an overexaggeration and you're letting the fact that you think it's boring get in the way of your prediction.

bleh, the Manchurian Candidate looked, and was boring as hell. The Interpreter looks far better and far more entertaining judging by the trailer.

The Interpreter has the better cast overall.

Denzel is a bigger draw than Kidman. Meryl Streep has won alot more awards than Sean Penn. Jonathan Demme is critically acclaimed for Silence of the Lambs. So yeah it has a better cast and not to exclude Jon Voight or Liev Schrober who was robbed of a supporting actor nom

The Interpreter has the better cast overall.
But the not the most popular cast. Denzel is far more popular with the mainstream audience than Nicole and Sean.

Prediction- $16M opening, going toe to toe with Kung Fu Hustle for #1 $55M total.
