Oh wow, this is Rated R. Very interested to see how this does.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
Early sales in very limited shows look promising. That is not a surprise considering its Nolan, ensemble cast and high profile subject. Emily Blunt did say it plays like a thriller than a drama. Only constraints are R rated(not sure why this needs it) and screens will be a constraint opening with Barbie which will be a biggie as well.
if I have to guess its going to open > 50m based on early trends.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
In a weird way, it feels like Barbie's marketing is helping Oppenheimer more than Oppenheimer's marketing is helping Oppenheimer. There's now an aura of masculinity surrounding this movie, which you wouldn't expect from a 3 hour black and white biopic.
But its impossible to say until we get some real numbers.

What could be potentially fun is the whole double feature thing that has gone viral. If a lot of people check both out on the weekend it could be a really crazy weekend.

Feel like we are about to see something iconic happen that weekend. I think Barbie is going to beyond overwhelm Oppenheimer but the rivalry buzz seems to be helping both.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
Agreed. I'm seeing people discuss seeing both of them opening day/weekend. They seem to have captured the interest of moviegoers of all sorts by just opening the same day.
Can't really think of any two films having this sort of friendly "rivalry" or relationship that has people interested. Maybe it's just how different the two films are from one another.

I hate to be a Debbie Down we but I’ll be the outlier and say that I’m beyond sick of the “rivalry” between these two movies and really don’t understand what the big deal is that they’re opening on the same weekend, came wait for them to come because I’m sick of hearing about it lol

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
It's interesting from a buzz angle but I think the more consequential gravity shifting rivalry is MI vs Oppenheimer. It raises a lot of industry issues related to premium screen bandwidth, has some big Hollywood heavyweights involved with Nolan and Cruise, and will say a lot about how much the market can expand to accommodate both. Barbie will be fine as a different demo but MI could have a big impact on just how big Oppenheimer gets.

Thinking 60m+ opening for this and over 200m total.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
If this does $60m, despite it being Nolan and a summer blockbuster of sorts, I will be very impressed. This could easily come out in awards season and make $75m tops and I'd expect that. If it turns into some huge hit then it's down to great marketing. Not sure how much the Barbie thing helped, but the trailers for Oppenheimer are everywhere every 5 minutes.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
This is receiving a much larger marketing push than the standard drama. I am still a bit skeptical as to how high this goes and how tense the film really is given that we all know what happens...but we'll see.

#Barbenheimer will be this year’s Gentleminions and this film will really benefit as a result of the press of releasing against Barbie. The Imax near me is already sold out most of its opening weekend

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
This is the greatest cross promotion between two films ever (and now MI7 seems to be getting in on the act).
Three must see films to save the summer.
I would have deemed Oppenheimer a success if it made say $40m/$120m. Looks to well exceed that now.

 Re: Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" - July 21, 2023
Still not convinced this really breaks out. The title is too obscure for most people, Cillian Murphy is not leading man action hero material, the Nolan brand took a hit with Tenet....in the 40s yet but not beyond that.

Tenet wasn’t exactly amazing but I don’t think it hurt his brand.

If Oppenheimer is really just a straight up drama, it would be pretty rare to have that high of an opening.

I think the frenzy of Barbenheimer will get this to go over 45m+ OW. Without it yeah I don't see how this would do much more than 35m.

Dunkirk adjusts to 60m OW, don’t see this as a much harder sell

Definitely an easier sell than a drama about people doing math in rooms. For what it's worth, I think the PLF screens and Barbenheimer of it all can get this to a $50m opening, especially if reviews are really good.

I love movies about people doing math in rooms, really anything in rooms, I’m here for it, as long as they don’t go outside too much, and don’t stray too much from the focused subject of doing maths.

Comfortably. I am feeling 60m + ow. Only wrinkle is lack of shows but final week should take care of that
