The internet (as a whole) is more of our age group. But you mentioned a site like this specifically, so I'm saying that this site has more sophisticated moviegoers, if that's what you want to call it. Even with all the sophisticated moviegoers, we still have many that want to see House of Wax. But, like I said, our site is a bad example of the demographic.

I'll tell you what, Zingy, I'll make a deal with you. If I'm right, you have to go see Monster-in-Law the following weekend, and if you're right, I'll go see House of Wax.

Interesting proposition. I'm definitely going to take that bet, but I can't guarantee I can see Monster-in-Law opening weekend. I'll see it during it's run, though, for sure.

Let's make the bet specific, though. Since you're saying less than $15 million, and I'm saying $20 million or more, I propose that if House of Wax makes less than $18 million this weekend, I'll see Monster-in-Law. If it makes more than $18 million, you'll see House of Wax.

Deal?

No more than 15 million for me, or I have to see it, and it's no less than 20 million for you, or you have to see Monster-in-Law. It would be possible that we could both lose, and thus, both have to see those movies, so anything that doesn't meet our specific predictions makes us a loser. Deal?

The poll isn't an indicator except in some cases. House of Wax is one. The fact that people like Libs, publicenemy#1, myself, and Michael all have an interest in House of Wax as a cheesy, but entertaining movie implies that House of Wax is a horror with more appeal. The fact that these people usually ignore horror movies but have a slight interest in House of Wax could benefit its box office take. House of Wax has some "extra" value that seperates it from the other horrors, and it isn't ONLY to those on the internet. If 5% of those with a slight interest in House of Wax (that's 1 out of 20) shows up during the weekend, it'd add a lot more than you think.

Slashers do well anyways. I wouldn't be half suprised if Kingdom of Heaven totally bombs (as in, failing to make $22m+) and House of Wax takes #2 with ease.

The appeal is seeing Paris Hilton die. Libs doesn't have enough interest to go see it opening weekend or at the theater, so that's a moot point. You're trying to give credibility by using her, but she's in the camp that's NOT going. There are probably going to be a lot of people who want to see it, but only at their convenience, not at the theater. Many more than you realize.

House of Wax will take #2 with ease, anyway, so I'm assuming you meant #1?

Don't make those generalizations, first of all. I'm not about to waste $10 to go see Paris Hilton die. If I really, really wanted to, I could imagine it myself. At the very least, in my mind, I can give her a deformed face or twisted body while she's murdered. That's probably more than House of Wax shows.

Also, why do you always bring up Libs? It seems like every other post of yours mentions her.

Regardless, did publicenemy#1 or myself ever claim we were seeing it opening weekend? Nope. The point I obviously failed at stating is, if more people seem to have a SLIGHT interest in House of Wax, as compared with the number of people interested in other slashers, its weekend box office will obviously benefit. The movie is extending past the horror audience. Since when is more appeal, even if it means that people will check it out on DVD (as compared with never), a bad thing for a movie's box office?

And, finally, I don't think HOW will be #1. It's possible, but unlikely. KOH is going to be in what, 3500+ screens? That automatically means more showtimes...

So...

If House of Wax makes $15 million or less this weekend, you win, and I have to see Monster-in-Law. If House of Wax makes $20 million or more, I win, and you have to see House of Wax. If it grosses anywhere between $15.01 and $19.99, I see Monster-in-Law AND you see House of Wax.

Did I get that right? If that's what it is, I accept.

Jeepers Creepers 2 was.

Thats THE most homoerotic horror film iv ever seen. eheh.

You obviously haven't seen Nightmare on Elm Street 2.

That was classic homoerotic cheese all the way. The gym teacher in the leather bar, Jessie having something inside of him just dying to get out and the girly screams. Not to mention ditching his girlfriend to go spend the night at his shirtless friend's house. Freddy even seemed gay here. I mean tying a gay gym teacher to poles and towel slapping his ass?

lol. Seriously.

I am sure you probably did see the movie, but I think it outranks JC2 when it comes to obvious. But, JC2 was definately a homoerotic horror film itself.

The thing is that The Amityville Horror actually looked better. It had a well-made scary trailer, it had the "based on a true story" aspect going for it and it was a remake of a well-known (even if not so beloved) horror movie.

Purely a matter of opinon; imo The Amityville had THE worst trailer ive ever seen
Easily.
Oh wait there is Alone in the Dark....

I am not surprised to be honest at whos saying that this films going to be a disaster. My lowest prediction would be $14m

Okay, if someone says that The Amityville Horror's trailer is the worst one they've ever seen, it's hard to take their opinion seriously for me.

I stick with $14-16 million as the range and my personal prediction being $14.5 million.

Evidently Ridley Scotts new epic is going to generate a hell of a lot of buzz; and Crash's amazing marketing campaign and even more amazing appeal to online film crowds is going to help it do very good buisness. But whos to say House of Wax cant cash in either? Any other weekend id say it'd have a shot at a $20m+ opening frame.

You know, if it opened back in January/February before the horror movies onslaught, I'd have said that it does have a shot at $20+ million because for some reason people were hungry for horror movies. But as of now, I believe people have endured enough of them...

House of Wax WILL take #2 with ease. It's not like it's too hard either. Hithhiker's Guide will drop around 40-45% to about $12-13 million. I am pretty sure that House of Wax will at least be able to overcome that.

I think this is a really smart movie on Dark Castle's part. It drops the whole kitsch factor thing they were going with and highlights the brutality of the film, which is judging from reviews supposed to be really high. It doesn't mention Paris Hilton's name once, either - which is a good thing.

 Now come on.. I think that's cheating a little making it look like a true story when it isn't.. That's fucking decpetive to sell some shit movie like this..

I was using that argument for opening weekend...lol

It looks stupid, and people associate Paris Hilton with stupid things. That is going to put people off. You have such a small audience potential for this film, because it's not going to win the adult audience from Kingdom of Heaven and Crash , the under 17 crowd is out because of the rating, and the horror audience will be getting pulled away by Amityville, and some will be burned out on the overkill.

Where do you expect this audience to come from on opening weekend, Zingy? I still think it will be second this weekend, but a distant second.

Well, first of all, The Amityville Horror won't hurt House of Wax. The Amityville Horror won't have more than $5 million this weekend, so I highly doubt that will hurt House of Wax. It'll be the other way around, if anything. Second of all, Kingdom of Heaven and Crash sure do have the adult audiences, but what about the 16-25 (or 16-30) year olds? I'm sure their choice would be House of Wax over the other two, and it's targeted at this age group, anyways. I don't think it's TRYING to get the adult audience, though it can get horror fans of adults and fans of the original House of Wax.

For example, my dad is a horror fan, and he thinks House of Wax looks good. He wants to see it, but Kingdom of Heaven is his first choice. I'm surprised he wants to see Crash, though, because he's usually not into those types of movies.

Well, I'm going to see Amityville this weekend, specifically on Saturday and I will thumb my nose at the House of Wax viewers while I enjoy no teens, no cell phones going off and no talking that made Amityville even more enjoyable.. Good luck for those who choose to sit through House of Wax knowing you'll have all of the above I've mentioned to contend with.. :-k

Its gross in UK should count towards the American gross anyway, as UK is no more than an American province. Just like Canada

But this kind of advertising might actually work. It worked for TCM, The Amityville Horror and BWP.

However, I still don't believe in a big opening, but it should be able to crack $10 million, definitely.

mansonmyers & Dr Lecter: You guys are kidding me, right? ;)

You have to type in "Paris Hilton" in the search box, and not just Paris Hilton. Otherwise, Google will search for both "Paris", which is the capital of France, and "Hilton", which is a huge hotel chain.

"Paris Hilton" gets 2 540 000 hits.

*I* typed "Paris Hilton" into Google and got 2,960,000 hits, but my server has substantial firewalls. Hilton's hits would be heavily filtered because they relate to her *cough* small screen debut. (but that didn't stop Google from displaying a "sponsored link" to purchase said debut.)

Man, where the hell do you live? There were just as many teens at my Amityville Horror showing then there were at any other horror movie released this year. I'm expecting the same with House Of Wax, but at least the teens have to be over 17 years old. My theater is uber-strict with the whole carding thing. They even have two security guards that stand in front of the big R rated movies every weekend.
