I also just looked at Exorcist 2. The first one was HUGE and yes the second was released later but still lost a HUGE chunk of its audience.

Woah Rev. Defending Star Wars is important obviously, but we need to keep Bill Cosby away from our youngsters.

Mockingjay 2. Finale and dropped huge and OW tanked big from CF.

MJ2 dropped from MJ1, while both are disappointing looking at one after another decrease doesn't really make it look like the most disappointing sequel in terms of drops.

What's really stupid is mockingjay combined is about 600 domestic. The one true case where unnecessary splits kill its potential.

I mean imagine the marketing of part 2 with part 1. It would have opened 170+. Could of hit 500 million. Sure in the end, they made more money, but in the end you have two Less than stellar films that could have been one good finale.

Maybe not. They would probably not spend $285m on the budget like on these two. Add marketing costs (which were huge I'm guessing as the movie had a rather big promo campaign here, even for a blockbuster) and they would pretty much have same earnings. But on the other hand splitting them in two gave Lionsgate visibility as a studio this year and last year. They have a lot of movies next year, but at best case scenario they have 2 or 3 $100m+ movies.

Yeah, as much as I hate to say it, financially, it was better splitting them. But in terms of reputation and how well the franchise will be remembered, it should have been one film. Sadly, studio priority is what they can make right here, right now, not in ten years.

While I am sure a finale would have made more I just don't think this would have out-opened CF without the games in the finale as well. I have been saying that the success of first two movies were largely due to games factor. Something similar happened with Maze Runner sequel as well.

I remember being very underwhelmed by MIIB's run relative to my expectations.

Have you seen MIB2. I remember me and 3 friends going out and being back 70 minutes later. The film is just down right terrible. I'm surprised it doesn't get more play as the worst sequel ever made. Back to the future 2 it is not.

Smith was completely out of it too, people like to knock him but he was much worse off in 99-2003

I've been spared the experience save a couple bits and pieces here and there.

MIB2 out-opened the original (albeit marginally) it just didn't have the legs like the original seems fine specially when the movie was so bad.

After the Superbowl ad aired I recall seeing more than a few "$125m 5-Day Opening / $275-325m Total" predictions being bandied about.

Hmm I did check out some of the old posts(I wasn't around at that time) and found that it was over-predicted by many here.

both Back to the Future sequels. They both seem beloved yet they took massive drops from the first one and Part 3 didn't even make the top ten grossing films of the year

Rambo 3 and Gremlins 2 are also total WTF performances

Blair Witch 2 was a disaster considering how the first did.
