Peter Weir cleaning up, adjusted.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Anaconda is one of those movies which is sometimes mistakenly looked back on as a "bomb" because it was critically panned.
Speaking of which - Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes adjusts to $259.5 million. That is also incorrectly considered a flop because it was critically panned and had bad WOM.
And Batman and Robin adjusts to $190 million - but unlike Apes, I think it basically broke even theatrically and made a profit on video. Though as with Apes, the critical/WOM fallout is what sealed the fate of that iteration of the franchise, because of the risk that the next entry might be a real bomb.

There's Something About Mary was sure huge it would adjust to 314,070,668 now. It would be hard to make an R rated comedy do that well these days.

Mary was a huge sleeper. I think it hit no.1 for the first time in its 7th weekend.

I still remember Box Office Guru using puns like "Something About Mary had a weekend decline as slim as Miss Diaz herself" or something like that

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Sister Act was just ridiculously big. Buy yeah Whoopi was coming off Ghost. It was easier for these type of comedies to break out back then. Now people would just wait for DVD/download.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I know someone mentioned George of the Jungle, but of course the film that started them all:
The Flintstones- 255 million Scooby Doo- 215 million Casper- 188 million Inspector Gadget- 154 million
People still are surprised by Smurfs or Chipmunks. I'm actually quite surprised they never attempted a Jetsons film. Seemed like it would have been an obvious 50+ opener today.

Isn't there a Jetsons film in development with Kanye West involved?

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
I hope not. Also, in the same boat as Waterworld
Godzilla- 237 million. On what would probably be a 220 million budget today. Probably would be in the 650-700 WW range.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Hollywood has tried several times over the past three decades to get a live-action Jetsons movie off the ground. The earliest attempt was by Paramount in 1984, and was teased in an industry promo reel. It was also mentioned at a NATO meeting, and Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn were name-dropped as playing George and Jane. In 2006, there was an announcement that Jonathan Lipnicki had been cast as Elroy for an upcoming film version. The release also mentioned Steve Martin (as George), Diane Lane (as Jane) and Lindsay Lohan (as Judy). I never heard about that version again after the Lipnicki announcement - was it really happening, or was it one of those rumors that mistakenly got put out as if it were actually happening? Then there was the Robert Rodriguez version that was stuck in development hell in the late 2000s. I'd be very surprised if the movie actually gets made - then again, in years past I would have said the same thing about Ender's Game, or I Am Legend, or I Robot (that is, if you consider what actually got made to be an adaptation at all...)

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
This just made me think of how many times we here that a film could be the biggest bomb of all time. But look at Waterworld, Godzilla, etc.
Now look at Cutthroat Island. It only adjusts to 18 million on a still ridiculous unadjusted 98 million. It's been 18 years, and inflation can't help it at all. We'll all be dead before Cutthroat Island ever adjusts to making money over its unadjusted budget. Pluto Nash same thing. Adjusts to 6 million and without even adjusting it's 100 million budget, it's still a train wreck.

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Magnus wrote: one thing about adjusting flops is that you HAVE to factor that the budget also gets inflated. If you're going to inflate gross you have to inflate the budget too. That's my point though, Waterworld and Godzilla may have not reached expectations, but their openings, OS, and overall performance weren't terrible. Inflating they're budgets you see it even better. Cutthroat Island would still be a bomb if you only inflated the gross. It's budget would be well over 180 million today. Could you imagine a film costing that much and only making 18 million. Sure we see films make 30 million on over 100 million budgets all the time. But when was the last time something did that disastrous?

 Re: Holy adjusted gross shit!
Yeah, there really hasn't been a megabomb of that magnitude since Pluto Nash. The closest equivalents I can think of in the last decade are probably The Alamo, Stealth, Mars Needs Moms and R.I.P.D., but none of them cost as much or made as little. (The Lone Ranger cost more, but it also made more, and its losses are still not going to be as huge a proportion of its costs.)
