I think it would be incredibly awesome if it beat HP1's then record breaking OW in one day. It needs 90.3M to do that. GO POTTER!

Even with Potter onslaught I think that is a good number for TF3 and Pooh. Great for HB

95 million would put it at 181 million for the weekend. It would need 19 million on Monday to become the fastest 200 million grosser. The Dark Knight did 24.5 million on its first Monday 3 years ago.

Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is making box office history, earning north of $90 million on Friday to easily score the best single day gross of all time at the domestic box office.

I just realized how insane this number is. It's OD number alone will stand as the 2nd biggest OW behind TF3 and highest of the 3-day weekend releases this year :whaa: :zonks:

This is incredible. What an amazing opening day, and an incredible way to cap off the entire series.

I saw the film, and I really enjoyed myself. Cuaron's masterful 3rd film is still my favourite of the series, but all things considered, I felt this last film really ended the journey in a very emotionally satisfying way, leaving me feeling great about a series that has ended and now spanned an entire decade.

Overall, I'm pretty impressed at the overall quality of the entire series, and frankly, in retrospect, amazed that ALL seven books were made into films, and that all eight films were blockbuster successes (just look at all the other failed fantasy series and the dwindling Narnia). That is truly a remarkable accomplishment.

Peace,
Mike

Post Re: Friday Numbers
I was originally down on this Harry Potter, having been frustrated with the muddled pace of the last two, but by about a week ago it was clear this one was different. Not only was it the very last one, but the ads made it clear that this movie was chock-full of worthwhile action scenes. I think that the apocalyptic posters, combined with incredibly strong early word and constant media conversation about the finality of this massive zeitgeist franchise, has made Part II have a strong appeal to mainstream audiences the last few films might not have had.

Even if Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II has bad legs, it will still easily become the highest grossing Harry Potter ever. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II seems to have very solid word of mouth, summer weekdays to look forward to, a good chance of holding the number one spot for multiple weekends, and a shot at the highest grossing movie of 2011.

More impressively, it has an outside shot at not just winning the opening weekend record, but slam dunking it by fifteen million more. This is an awesome day to be a box office junkie.

Really incredible. It should be surprising when these records are broken. And they should be smashed in this fashion. Never again can we underestimate the might of Harry Potter.

$100m OD is pretty much a lock now, the only question that remains is how much higher will it go above this....

I'm not going to start a new thread here but

HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PT. 2 cast quite a spell on audiences as it conjured up $92.1 million on Friday--a new single day record!

That is only a pure guess and they are not any better with weekend projections than most of people here.

Post Re: Box Office Early Weekend Estimates
Hmm, if $92.1m is indeed the first material estimate for OD then it must've slowed down a tad through the night (compared to The Dark Knight). Early extrapolations based on TDK would've given it a $100m+ OD.

This is still monstrous and raises the OD record by $20m, unprecedented. A shame it didn't hit the magic $100m in 1-Day, that would've given it an even more special accolade.

Looks like anywhere between $170m-$180m is in the cards. Who would've thought, the majority of the predictions was languishing in the $145-155m range whreas the most daring only went up to something like $165m.
