Re: Japan Box-Office: Usual Locations - Saturday Seats/Showi
He's adorable, though!
The Maze Runner earned ~¥35 million (~$290,000) yesterday (Friday). It should be targeting an opening weekend around ¥150 million ($1.2/1.3 million), which will probably only be good enough to debut in fourth place over the weekend unless Chappie bombs.
I'll actually post the Weekend Forecast later this evening.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (05/23-24)
Weekend Forecast (05/23-24) 01 (01) ¥224 million ($1.9 million), -26%, ¥4.47 billion ($37.3 million), Cinderella (Disney) Week 5 02 (--) ¥205 million ($1.7 million), 0, ¥205 million ($1.7 million), Initiation Love (Toho) NEW 03 (--) ¥155 million ($1.3 million), 0, ¥190 million ($1.6 million), The Maze Runner (Fox) NEW 04 (--) ¥140 million ($1.2 million), 0, ¥140 million ($1.2 million), Chappie (Sony) NEW 05 (02) ¥136 million ($1.2 million), -20%, ¥1.83 billion ($15.3 million), Biri Gal (Toho) Week 4 06 (03) ¥105 million ($870,000), -33%, ¥415 million ($3.5 million), Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 2 07 (04) ¥82 million ($680,000), -32%, ¥4.14 billion ($34.6 million), Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) Week 6 08 (06) ¥72 million ($595,000), -25%, ¥1.99 billion ($16.6 million), Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Attack! (Toho) Week 6 09 (07) ¥68 million ($560,000), -36%, ¥3.54 billion ($29.5 million), Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) Week 6 10 (08) ¥67 million ($550,000), -30%, ¥460 million ($3.8 million), Poison Berry in My Brain (Toho) Week 3 11 (05) ¥65 million ($535,000), -37%, ¥3.20 billion ($26.7 million), Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) Week 7 12 (09) ¥40 million ($460,000), -38%, ¥140 million ($1.2 million), Run All Night (Warner Bros.) Week 2
Looks like we have another pretty uneventful May weekend coming up. May (and June) is largely a dumping ground for films since it's between major holiday months, so it's to be expected every year. At least the most of the wide openers this month haven't fared too badly, though.
>I want to predict that Initiation Love will debut on top, especially since it's playing significantly wider than anything else in the Top 10, but its pre-sales are pretty weak. A debut above ¥200 million doesn't look certain at the moment, so hopefully it counters its mediocre pre-sales with solid night business. Otherwise, Cinderella is going to enjoy its fifth-consecutive week atop the box-office.
>The Maze Runner didn't do too well yesterday with a Friday take suggesting a opening weekend of ¥150 million may be as high as it goes. And today's pre-sales aren't looking very good either. However, it does appear it could beat or compete with other young adult or imported book adaptations like Twilight, Divergent and The Hunger Games, which all bombed, and I'd consider that a success... I guess?
>Chappie looks like a dud. I wouldn't be too surprised if it comes in below Biri Gal over the weekend, but it should have a pretty high avg. ticket price. I doubt too many young people or senior citizens will be checking it out, so the most of its tickets should be sold without discount.
>The #9/10 spots this weekend looks very competitive. Furious 7 would have been a safe Top 10 film this weekend, but with being in release for the longest time, it's experiencing some sharp screen cuts this weekend.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (05/23-24)
Do we know what DBZ weekend actual was last weekend? Based on your estimate there did it do ¥107 million?
Also based on your forecast is it still looking at a ¥3.65-3.75 billion finish or has that changed slightly now?

I am amazed at Shin-chan's growth. I mean, it's almost doing the numbers that some Conan movies were doing during the 2004-2008 period (Movie 9 : 2.15 billion) and look where that franchise is now. It probably has more room for growth too.

Also based on your forecast is it still looking at a ¥3.65-3.75 billion finish or has that changed slightly now? ¥106 million. And yeah, it's likely to finish somewhere in that range. It probably has more room for growth too. Yeah, the films have been impressive over the past few years. It's a lot younger skewing than Detective Conan, so that'll probably limit its growth, but it does appeal it has some room to grow given the increases of the recent releases. Although, pretty much every annual franchise (except Pokemon), has seen noticeable growth at the box office over the past few years. It seems like almost every year now they're breaking their own franchise record of some kind, whether it's on opening weekend or final gross and admissions.

DBZ's Saturday didn't look that great so I guess that ¥68 million isn't gonna happen?

Yeah, that's probably too high. Saturday was rather harsh with most films dropping 40-60% compared to last week except for Biri Gal (-13%) and Cinderella (-31%).
Let's see what happens today. So far, Sunday is looking pretty good.

Weekend Estimates (05/23-24) 01 (01) ¥235 million ($1.9 million), -22%, ¥4.48 billion ($37.4 million), Cinderella (Disney) Week 5 02 (--) ¥195 million ($1.6 million), 0, ¥195 million ($1.6 million), Initiation Love (Toho) NEW 03 (02) ¥161 million ($1.3 million), -06%, ¥1.86 billion ($15.5 million), Biri Gal (Toho) Week 4 04 (--) ¥135 million ($1.1 million), 0, ¥170 million ($1.4 million), The Maze Runner (Fox) NEW 05 (03) ¥101 million ($830,000), -36%, ¥415 million ($3.5 million), Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 2 06 (--) ¥85 million ($700,000), 0, ¥85 million ($700,000), Chappie (Sony) NEW 07 (04) ¥79 million ($650,000), -35%, ¥4.14 billion ($34.6 million), Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) Week 6 08 (08) ¥63 million ($520,000), -34%, ¥460 million ($3.8 million), Poison Berry in My Brain (Toho) Week 3 09 (06) ¥62 million ($515,000), -35%, ¥1.99 billion ($16.6 million), Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Attack! (Toho) Week 6 10 (07) ¥60 million ($500,000), -43%, ¥3.53 billion ($29.5 million), Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F (Toei) Week 6 11 (05) ¥50 million ($415,000), -52%, ¥3.18 billion ($26.5 million), Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) Week 7 12 (11) ¥32 million ($265,000), -41%, ¥1.36 billion ($11.4 million), Parasyte (Part 2) (Toho) Week 5 13 (10) ¥31 million ($260,000), -42%, ¥1.30 billion ($10.9 million), Ryozu and the Seven Henchmen (Warner Bros.) Week 5 14 (09) ¥24 million ($195,000), -62%, ¥125 million ($1.0 million), Run All Night (Warner Bros.) Week 2 15 (--) ¥20 million ($165,000), 0, ¥20 million ($165,000), Initial D the Movie Legend 2 (Shochiku) NEW
>Another strong week for Cinderella. It won't reach the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone by the end of the month, but should exceed the mark during the first week of June. The film should finish with around ¥5.5 billion or so.
>Not bad for Initiation Love. May is one of the weakest months of the year, so a debut near ¥200 million (hopefully actuals come in slightly higher) is solid enough. It'll end up earning a little over ¥1 billion, giving Toho yet another success for the year.
>Biri Gal continues its incredible run. The film surprised during its opening weekend and has been pulling off incredible weekly holds ever since. It's likely to reach ¥2.5 billion, and might even make a play at ¥3 billion, which would be amazing and definitely a contender for best performance this year so far.
>The Maze Runner performed decently, and opened much higher than any of the debuts from The Hunger Games, Divergent, or Twilight films. It'll end up being the only, somewhat, successful imported young adult book adaptation film in the market.
>Chappie is a disappointment, or possibly even a bomb. Sony has nothing this year. They haven't had a film reach ¥1 billion yet, and there isn't a single film on the release schedule except for possibly Pixels, that is going to get there this year. Sony could go on record as having their worst year ever (since at least 1998).

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (05/23-24)
Mondays figures are looking surprisingly good. Most films are up considerably from last Monday. In DBZ's case it looks like it could have a better Monday than the Monday from 2 weeks back.
Is there an holiday or something?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (05/23-24)
There isn't a holiday but there's no school today, so films targeting children, students, and even those that skew female are thriving. DBZ has a fair amount of high school fans, so that's why it's seeing a nice bump.
A noticeable earthquake (5.4) shook the Kanto region an hour ago, so some evening business may be slow as a result. No damage has been reported.
Japan receives many earthquakes (several hundred a day) and has been hit with 11 measuring above 4.0 in just the past 2 weeks (28 above 4.0 this month), so they're used to this but today's big one lasted long enough to set off some alarms, so it might halt moviegoers from going out this evening.
The majority of box office receipts comes out of the Kanto region.

Yeah it didn't quite beat the Monday from two weeks ago but it was close. Is today the only day they have off school?
Any word on actuals yet?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (05/23-24)
Weekend Ranking (05/23-24) 01 (01) Cinderella (Disney) Week 5 02 (--) Initiation Love (Toho) DEBUT 03 (02) Biri Gal (Toho) Week 4 04 (--) The Maze Runner (Fox) DEBUT 05 (03) Kakekomi (Shochiku) Week 2 06 (04) Detective Conan: Sunflowers of Inferno (Toho) Week 6 07 (--) Chappie (Sony) DEBUT 08 (06) Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Attack! (Toho) Week 6 09 (08) Poison Berry in My Head (Toho) Week 3 10 (05) Furious 7 (Toho-Towa) Week 7
>Cinderella is holding onto that box office crown once again this weekend, achieving its fifth-consecutive week atop the chart.
Playing in its fifth weekend, Disney's latest fairy tale retelling grossed ¥246,594,800 ($2.0 million) with 183,506 admissions and brings its five week total up to an impressive ¥4,537,190,000 ($37.8 million) and 3,569,826 admissions. The film continues its strong weekly holds and is going to exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone over next weekend, or at the very latest on next Monday/Tuesday.
>Initiation Love comes in second place as this weekend's top debut, but couldn't quite draw in enough people to take the #1 spot away from Cinderella.
The mystery/romance film directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, grossed a fair ¥201,587,600 ($1.7 million) with 142,617 admissions on 281 screens over the weekend. The film had quite a high avg. ticket price of ¥1,413, indicating it drew in a very significant adult audience (30-50) that aren't eligible for most discount ticket options. And it may be a little slow getting there, but it's pretty likely to gross a little above the ¥1 billion milestone, which is good for a May/June release.
>The Maze Runner came in fourth place, earning a decent ¥149,266,700 ($1.2 million) with 105,819 admissions across 344 screens over the weekend, and a 3-day total of ¥190 million ($1.6 million).
The debut figure itself is only decent, however, it outopened every Twilight, Hunger Games and Divergent film that has been released in Japan so far, so in that sense, it's quite a successful debut, though it's still unlikely to reach the ¥1 billion milestone.
>Kakekomi exceeded ¥400 million ($3.5 million) and 300,000 admissions after two weeks in release, and is still on course to reaching the ¥1 billion milestone. Granted, it's not much, but 1 billion is considered the financial success mark and isn't an easy number for most May/June releases to achieve.
>Chappie comes in a very disappointing seventh place debut. Playing on 267 screens, it only earned ¥83,549,400 ($690,000) with 58,574 admissions over the weekend.
Sony wasn't able to get this one to capitalize on the decent successes of director's previous films nor by having two popular actors, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver, in the film credits. Chappie is likely to finish below ¥400 million ($3-3.5 million).
>Crayon Shin-chan: My Moving Story! Cactus Large Attack! remains in the Top 10 for a sixth week in release, and also managed to break the ¥2 billion milestone! This is the first Crayon Shin-chan film, the 21st installment, to have exceeded the milestone. Very impressive showing.
>Dragon Ball Z: Revival of F falls out of the Top 10 (11th) after six weeks in release, but it did exceed the ¥3.5 billion mark over the weekend.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating Soon
So did DBZ have a worse weekend than estimated or did Furious 7 have a better weekend?
It's actuals are the same as the estimates so I'd guess the latter. Would you say ¥3.7 billion is a lock? Or is it not likely to even make that much?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating Soon
Furious 7 ranked 10th in admissions and gross (and DBZ 11th in both), so it's weekend estimate was underestimated. Most films improved on estimates.
Dragon Ball Z might reach ¥3.7 billion, but ¥3.65-3.69 billion is more likely. Now that it's out of the top 10, it'll quickly lose its remaining screens/showtimes in the coming weeks.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking; Charts Updating Soon
OK thanks, I suppose I can be happy with ¥3.65 billion. It didn't make their goal unfortunately but before that was even mentioned I personally was hoping for ¥3.5 billion.
You don't know what it's weekend gross actually was in the end do you? Or will that come later?

Since it's out of the Top 10, its weekend gross may not be reported this week. If it's released, I'll post it here for you.
