Post Charlie' still cooking at foreign box office
Monday September 26 2:27 AM ET
Yahoo!

Quote:
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" led the foreign box office again last weekend, while domestic lightweight "Cinderella Man" punched its way to the No. 2 spot.

"Charlie" took in an estimated $13.7 million from 55 markets. The cumulative total is now $199.3 million. The Tim Burton film opened at No. 1 in Italy with $2.8 million, ahead of "Fantastic Four" in its second weekend and "Madagascar" in its fourth.

In Denmark, the children's tale bowed to $333,000, again the top film ahead of "Madagascar" in its fourth weekend and local film "Drabet" in its fifth.

"Charlie" also increased takings by 12% in Japan, where it was the dominant film for the third weekend running with revenue of $4.1 million for a territory total of $20.5 million.

Koreans also love "Charlie," handing over $1.5 million in the film's second weekend there, No. 3 behind two local titles, as its local total rose to $4.9 million.

"Cinderella Man" claimed $6.2 million from 32 territories, with its three-week total of more than $27 million matching the entire foreign purse for another Depression-era film, "Seabiscuit."

The boxing drama sneak-previewed in star Russell Crowe's home territory of Australia, claiming $83,000 from eight theaters. "Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo" bowed at No. 1 in Australia with about $1.4 million, ahead of "The Dukes of Hazzard" with $1.2 million in its second weekend.

"Pride & Prejudice" held at No. 1 in the U.K. with $3.5 million, taking its local haul to almost $12 million in 10 days. The Jane Austen adaptation opened in the Netherlands to an estimated $270,000s, on par with "Shakespeare in Love."

"Bewitched" cast its spell over France, opening gat No. 1 with $2.1 million ahead of local title "Entre ses mains."

The foreign total has topped $50.8 million with five major territories still to open and looks set to pass domestic's $62 million.

"Dukes" also claimed the top spot in New Zealand with $472,000, as its foreign total rose to $11.2 million.

Great for CatCF, it's now at 403.02m worldwide. IMO, 450m is reachable.

Deuce Bigalow 2 no 1 in Oz, every box office analyst is shaking their head. However i thought it seemed about right, comedy is big in Oz.

Wow, Pride & Prejudice has been massive here. It made another $3.5 million in it's 2nd weekend. It opened to $4,565,290

Only dropping $1M from it's 1st weekend. (or £500,000).

Brilliant, another big UK hit for KEIRA.

That means guy ritchie's REVOLVER isn't Number 1.

REVOLVER and LAND OF THE DEAD could still be inside the top 3.

Anyone knows what's the current status of RotS in Japan?

And perhaps weekend takings (1st to current)?

In the weekend of 17-18 September, ROTS was number 10 in Japan. Up to date, it has made $81,630,497. I think this will be its last week in the top 10.

So ROTS will fall quite short of the $100m that a lot were predicting. It probably won't even match ROTK there. I certainly wouldn't have thought that, after what TPM and AOTC made there...

Perdictions of $110-130 mil in Japan for ROTS that some people were making seemed way high to me, though I do think ROTS momentum was hurt by the two earthquakes in Japan.

Wallace & Gromit's opening weekend in the UK was the 2nd largest of 2005 ($16,559,973), behind only ROTS $27,501,871. As expected however; with kids still in school, mid-week business was quite average......falling behind both Charlie and War of the Worlds.

Good weekend drops are assured, with hardly any competition from now until Harry Potter 4, it could eventually kick up $60m.

It's opening weekend was the largest 3-Day opening ever in Spain and the 4th largest overall behind ROTK's 5-Day, ROTS's 4-Day and Shrek 2's 5-Day.

Unfortunately, the drops have been outrageous, falling -49% and -62% the past 2 weeks.

'Wallace' hopping at overseas box office
SYDNEY (Hollywood Reporter) - "Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" held on to the top spot at the international box office during the weekend but faced some competition from " Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" and "Flightplan."

The weekend also saw international debuts of "Nanny McPhee" and new domestic champ "Doom."

"Wallace & Gromit" grossed an estimated $15.7 million from 32 markets and saw seven openings during the period, including Belgium and Taiwan. It remained No. 1 in the U.K., grossing $8 million. Its estimated international total is now $29 million.

"Corpse Bride" debuted in 13 territories, grossing an estimated $9.4 million from 19 countries, taking its total to just under $11.5 million. New territories included France, Japan, and Mexico.

"Flightplan" was No. 1 in at least 10 territories, including Germany, Brazil, Singapore and Austria. Now playing in 21 markets, the film earned an estimated $8.7 million, taking its international haul to $21.4 million. The German contribution of $3.8 million represented a personal best for star Jodie Foster.

Family film "Nanny McPhee," starring Emma Thompson and Colin Firth, made its international debut, opening at No. 2 in the U.K. with an estimated $4.5 million. The film goes into wider release early next year.

At the other end of the spectrum, the horror-action film "Doom," starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, grossed an estimated $1.3 million from nine territories, included No. 1 slots in Malaysia with $200,000 and Thailand with $327,000. The film enters Australia and Germany this week.

"Pride & Prejudice" grossed an estimated $4 million from eight territories, including the No. 1 spot in Australia, where it opened with $1.6 million. Its international total stands at $29.6 million.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" unwrapped an estimated $3.8 million to take its international gross to just more than $250 million, while "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" grossed about $3.2 million, taking its total to $39 million. The comedy bows next month in such key territories as France, Italy and Spain.

That's an excellent result for CatCf, especially after its mediocre opening. But is it common in France to have a multiplier under 3 (Like WotW)?

And thanks for the charts Arch, they're really useful.

Million Dollar Baby - 7.3x
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory - 7.2x
Madagascar - 5.5x
Brice de Nice - 5.2x
Mr. And Mrs. Smith - 3.3x
War of the Worlds - 2.6x
ROTS - 2.2x

---

Titanic - 17.16x
Finding Nemo - 7.7x
Star Wars 1: PM - 5x
Shrek 2 - 4.8x
HP1 - 4.7x
The Incredibles - 4.45x
LOTR: FOTR - 4.22x
LOTR: TTT - 4.1x
HP2 - 3.95x
Star Wars 2: AOTC - 3.8x
LOTR: ROTK - 3.4x
A Very Long Engagement - 3.3x
Spiderman 2 - 2.86x
Matrix: Reloaded - 2.85x
HP3 - 2.76x
Matrix: Revolutions - 2.26x

Multipliers around 3x are quite common nowadays for some of the bigger blockbusters.......unless you are a kiddie flick like Charlie or Harry Potter (though HP3 had a dismal multiplier) or a CGI smash like Nemo or Shrek 2...don't expect a multiplier more than 4x ;)

My predictions for France this year:

* Legend of Zorro - with an opening like this, it could eventually match the original's $22.7m total
* Star Wars 3 was the first movie to pass $20m on opening weekend ($22m for the regular 5-Day frame), Expect Harry Potter 4 to be the second and improve on HP3's $17.1m.
* Narnia arrives a week after King Kong, it will dominate the Christmas season.

Harry Potter 4 - $21m/$51m
Narnia - $9m/$48m
King Kong - $10m/$30m
Chicken Little - $4m/$25m
Legend of Zorro - $5.8m/$20m

Overseas champ 'Zorro' soars to $60 million
Monday November 7 5:43 AM ET

"The Legend of Zorro" led the foreign box office for a second weekend, earning an estimated $17.5 million from 60 markets, though new North American champ "Chicken Little" will be giving the film a run for its money based on its $5.5 million opening in nine smaller markets.

With only three small openings, including the United Arab Emirates, "Zorro's" international cumulative total now stands at just more than $60 million. It held on to its No. 1 ranking in both Spain and France.

"Chicken" was No. 1 across the board, including Russia, Mexico and Malaysia. It adds six countries in the coming week.

Also opening internationally was domestic disappointment "Elizabethtown," which debuted in 16 markets, including the U.K., Germany, France and Australia, and grossed $6 million. It is being released this weekend in Spain and Japan.

"Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" grossed an estimated $8.9 million from 37 countries, taking its international haul to just less than $45 million. Openings included a likely No. 1 slot in South Korea, where it grossed about $1.2 million.

Meanwhile, "Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" grossed an estimated $8 million from 40 countries to take its total to $107 million, including more than $50 million from the United Kingdom.

"Doom" opened in 13 more territories, including Hong Kong and Singapore, grossing an estimated $4 million across 28 territories. It has taken an estimated $12.3 million internationally so far and has 23 markets in which to open.

"The 40-Year-Old Virgin" opened in six markets, including Spain, grossing an estimated $3.3 million. Its international tally stands at $47 million.

Weekend trading also helped "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" surpass $260 million internationally, with the film now sporting an estimated total of $261.3 million.

"Fightplan" is going to rock Spain this next weekend. There is nothing big out there (just Zorro on its third weekend), the ads have been playing everywhere for the last two weeks like crazy, and every magazine you open has a Jodie Foster interview in it... And Jodie is huge in Spain. The title has also been changed to "Fightplan: Missing" and the TV ads only say "Missing", so if you needed any help, you get a prefect idea of the film´s concept...

I see no less than $3 Million opening weekend... and maybe close to $4M.

Great for Flightplan, which still hasn't opened in the UK. Also bigger than expected for In Her Shoes in the UK.
Nanny McPhee held its top spot for the second week, not the fourth, its in its 4th week of release (it climbed to #1 in its 3rd weekend) and dropped around 19% this weekend.

VOLVER - Italy

Volver has registered solid results in all the European markets it has opened in....Italy is one of its best markets.

It did have very humble beginnings, opening to a lowly $1.3m vs. DVC's $11m...but has seen 2 sucessive weeks of great holds/increases.

It's tracking above Almodovar's previous smash Bad Education and is following the same path as Non Ti Mouvre. Mouvre lasted for 14 weeks inside the Top 20 (quite rare in monster-drop Italy) and finished with a fantastic $10m. For a non-english blockbuster, that's very good.

Volver looks to surpass that mark....audiences are flocking to this movie after they've had their Da Vinci dose...
