Note - These are not necessarily the biggest weekends, screen counts, pta, or totals after X weeks,
but rather the rankings for films that have grossed over Y15,000,000,000 which Alice in Wonderland is targeting that have data available.

I won't be updating this every weekend, however, because some weeks have no data available for certain films, such as in Week 5. So I'll post the updated version every few weeks instead.

Was it released in Hong Kong? Was it any good?

Post-Golden Week drops are particularly bigger this year than many previous years because it began just a couple days before the weekend this year.

Alice in Wonderland manages a solid hold, especially considering it's size. I've already said plenty about it above, but expect a finish between $145-175m right now.

Trick the Movie 3 opens slightly higher than it's predecessor, and it's an impressive opening when you consider how busy the box-office has been over the past few weeks. A total in the low/mid 20's is likely.

Nodame Cantabile the Movie II looks like it's losing some steam actually. The four week total isn't too much above the original's, though the first did have a some more holiday time back in December/January. Toho was expecting Y6b, or a little over $60m... it can still happen with Summer beginning, but I'm going to lower that and expect a total in the low 50s.

Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky is still mirroring last year's highest grossing film in the franchise. The drops are almost identical, as are the weekends and totals. Last year's finished with $36m, so that looks good for this one too.

After an underwhelming opening for Clash of the Titans, it's having some pretty good holds. I predicted mid teens when it opened, but it should be able to reach high teens now.

Shutter Island keeps hanging around, now in it's 5th week. It's passed The Departed, and has a solid shot at crossing $20m. An impressive run.

I misread The Box's on Monday. Then it looked like a pretty good opening when looking at the screen count, but now it's rather disappointing, though not unexpected I suppose.

Quote:
The Oricon survey firm reports that the 57th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga has sold 2.282 million copies as of May 9 — thus making it the #1 best-selling book since Oricon began posting its book ranking charts in 2008. The volume shipped 10 weeks ago on March 4. The previous record-holder, the 53rd volume from the same manga series, sold 2.280 million copies after 61 weeks.

Shueisha published 3 million copies of the 57th volume in the largest first-printing run ever for any book in Japan, surpassing the 2.9 million copies of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The 57th volume sold 1.69 million copies in its first week of sales alone. By the second week, it also became the fastest manga volume to sell 2 million copies on Oricon's charts.

Total One Piece sales will soon surpass 200m copies, making it the first manga series to achieve this.

The reason I post non-box office news sometimes is to help predict how future adaptations of manga, in this case, may fare before they're released. Sort of how DVD sales can help predict box office in North America. Two of the manga in the Top 10 currently have a film adaptation in the Top 10 at the Box Office for instance. And there's almost always some manga adaptation in the Top 10 each week.

I don't know if it was released in Hong Kong.

That was my impression after seeing the trailer. The story is about a female captive feeling for her male captor.

I might see if Jason Gray still has the film. He was sending it (or streaming it online) to those who contacting him.

How To Date An Otaku Girl is opening here in HK on May 23. Special screenings already being shown on May 29 and 3/4 shows are full while the other is about 80% full. Has it opened in Japan yet?

That's Yankumi from Gokusen. Neat.

I haven't heard of it, and it's not on the May release schedule. Do you know the original title?

You know about Gokusen? It's one of my favorite tv comedy/drama. I haven't read the manga or watched the anime yet, though.

The movie was released last summer (did it get a HK release?). It opened over $5m and finished close to $40m.

No, I don't know.

Yeah, I watched the first live action season of Gokusen and it was LOL-worthy. I'm not sure if the anime will be any better though.

Yes, it got a HK release in January and finished with $58,000 US.

I need to start season 3 and find the movie sometime this summer. The show is indeed very funny. Sawada Shin (Matsumoto Jun) is purdy, too. ;)

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 5/15-16
An interesting article explaining that while the Box-Office is strong in terms of gross, many smaller local distributors, and foreign distributors are in critical condition in the market as the largest distributor, Toho (which keeps getting bigger and bigger each year), is sort of overwhelming them.

Quote:
The Japanese biz escaped the recession that ravaged the larger economy in 2009, if overall numbers told the whole story.

The local B.O. hit its second-highest annual total ever -- $2.29 billion -- while distribs released 448 local pics, the biggest number since 1991.

While leading distrib Toho has prospered, accounting for eight of the top-earning domestic pics last year -- including B.O. No. 1 "Rookies" ($92 million) -- many small- and medium-sized companies are struggling. Several have folded their tents in the past year, while others have scaled back budgets and slates.

The domestic production bubble has already popped," says Hiro Otaka, B.O. analyst for the Bunka Tsushin entertainment news service. "There may be as many 50 to 100 fewer films made here this year."

A central reason is the decline in the DVD market. Last year, shipments of all video software declined 5% to an estimated $2.7 billion. This is nearly $1 billion less than the all-time peak in 2004. Smaller producers have been particularly hard hit.

They can't turn a profit on theatrical, so they need DVD sales to survive," explains Otaka. "But now they can't make money on DVD either."

Distribs of U.S., European and other foreign pics, especially arthouse titles, are also hurting.

"Nobody was buying anything at Berlin, and Cannes will probably be the same," Otaka observes. Companies that are both foreign pic distribs and domestic pic producers, such as the late, lamented Cine Qua Non and Movie-Eye, can be hit by a double whammy.

Meanwhile, industry powerhouse Toho continues to dominate, with the roughly 30 titles it distribs annually accounting for nearly 30% of the domestic pic B.O. On Toho's lineup this year are three blockbusters that could determine whether total box office for the year is up or down: "Bayside Shakedown 3," "Umizaru 3" and "The Borrower Arrietty."

The first two are new entries in popular action series produced by the Fuji TV network. "Bayside Shakedown 2," whose rebel cop hero works in Tokyo's trendy bay area, earned $186.5 million in 2003 -- an all-time record for a live-action Japanese pic, while "Umizaru 2," about the rescue of ferry boat passengers by a Japanese Coast Guard diver, raked in $76 million in 2006. The new pics are expected to equal or better these numbers.

The third is a toon by Studio Ghibli, the anime colossus responsible for the monster hits of Hayao Miyazaki, though the new pic is directed by one-time Miyazaki underling Hiromasa Yonebayashi and is based on the Mary Norton children's classic "The Borrowers." The last such Ghibli pic, the 2006 "Tales from Earthsea," earned $82 million. (It was helmed by Miyazaki's son Goro.)

Overall B.O., however, has hovered around the $2 billion mark for the better part of a decade, despite the growth in screens from 2,524 in 2000 to 3,396 in 2009. "The pie isn't growing, so if one company like Toho gets rich, the others grow poorer," Otaka comments.

That goes for not only Toho's domestic rivals, but also for Hollywood and other foreign-pic distribs, who score with the occasional blockbuster but have otherwise watched their market share slip from 68.2% in 2000 to 43.1% in 2009. Led by Warner, Hollywood has fought back by distribbing and producing local pics, but the results have been mixed at best.

One ray of hope is 3D, where the Hollywood product far outdistances the local competition, in terms of budgets and sheer numbers. By 2012, nearly one-third of all Japanese screens are expected to be 3D -- and the Hollywood successors to "Avatar," which has earned more $160 million in Japan, will probably be filling most of them, including Legendary Pictures' 3D entry in Toho's iconic "Godzilla" franchise.

Toho plans to end the year big, with "Space Battleship Yamato." Based on a much-beloved 1970s Leiji Matsumoto toon, this sci-fi space opera is being compared to "Avatar" in its potential B.O. impact. Meanwhile, makers of the 300-plus local films that aren't on the Toho lineup will be battling for space of another kind, from theater marquees to DVD shelves.

It's not fair, but then neither were all those stompings Godzilla administered to the frantically fleeing citizens of Tokyo. In the Japanese biz, you can run from Toho, but you just can't hide.

Note though that the USD totals mentioned in this article are what the totals would be with the current exchange rate. Currently, Toho has distributed 7 of the Top 10 Grossing films of 2010.

It was projected to debut at No.3 this weekend, so it looks like $1.5-2m (probably leading to a $8-10m total) to me based on that. The weekend will be a little lower due to the Friday release though.

Weekend estimates (just the Hollywood films though),

Alice in Wonderland - $4.7m (-18%) for it's 5th weekend still playing in 877 screens, bringing it's total to $100m.

The weekend is strong, though I was expecting it to be closer to $105m in total. Could still go up a little though because they underestimate it's total by $2.5m last week. Still aiming for a total in the $145m-175m range. I'm thinking $155m.

Green Zone - $2.3m on 260 screens.

This is quite solid, indeed. It's most likely the 3day total, meaning the weekend itself will be about $1.8m, but solid nonetheless.

Post Re: Japan Box Office (2010); 5/15-16 - Alice hits $100m.
Fifth Weekend Comparisons (films that have grossed over Y15b Yen, or about $150m+).

1 1 Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) Toho $7,918,331 -6.0% 326 - $24,289 $108,516,372 5
1 1 Gake no ue no Ponyo (Ponyo on a Cliff) Toho $7,904,102 +12.7% 481 - $16,433 $92,309,426 5
1 1 Odoru daisosasen the movie 2: Rainbow Bridge wo fuusa seyo! (Bayside Shakedown 2) Toho $7,383,069 +16.0% 408 +8 $18,096 $87,751,257 5
1 1 Avatar Fox $5,572,343 +1.6% 761 -54 $7,322 $75,272,427 5
1 1 Alice in Wonderland Disney $4,700,000 -18.0% 877 $5359 $100,000,000 5

Still an estimate for Alice, and the Fifth Weekend comparisons are lacking because a couple films (Howl's Moving Castle, Harry Potter 2) have no Fifth week data. But it's once again clear in the weekend gross itself, but more importantly the week gross, that all the others will catch up soon (Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are now ahead) despite Alice's big leads over them and the rest in Week Three and Four.

New Releases this Week

It's possible the first film in the Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider The Movie: Cho Den-O Trilogy: Episode Red can knock Alice out of the top spot. Though there have been many films released in the series (and three news ones in just four weeks this summer), and some open very well, like the Decade film last December which opened over $5m, while others open much lower.

In other release news, Michael Jackson's This Is It (5th Biggest film of 2009) will be re-released on June 19th in preparation for the new Michael Jackson Commemorated film which opens on June 25th. Tickets go for sale this week.

If the exchange rate doesn't prevent it from happening, yes. I have a feeling it's starting to hurt it right now actually because the overall Week 5 gross (in USD) is a bit on the low side. Avatar was heading for $175m (or enough to beat Ponyo's $172.15m), but was hit by the exchange rate in the end and finished with $164m and may not have passed Bayside Shakedown 2 or Princess Mononoke, either. With the current exchange rate, Alice in Wonderland will need to break Y14b to hit $150m. And Disney's goal is Y15b, so $150m still looks good at the moment.

But the exchange rate is a reason I've started to post (usually on Thursdays) the yen total for every film available.

Admissions (and some grosses) for the select openers and holdovers will be available soon.

Alice in Wonderland hits 6m admissions after 5 weeks. This should put it at about $102m, so I expect HR to be a little low in their estimate again. 84% of it's gross is from 3D.

Nodame Cantabile the Movie II exceeds 2.5m admissions after 5 weeks. The first movie finished with about 3.3m admissions, and that mark will be exceeded probably at the end of May. 2.5m admissions should be about a $35.5m total.

Crayon Shin-chan: The Super Dimension has passed 1m admissions. The total should be about $13m after 5 weeks. It comfortably beat last year's film.

Also, many bigger Hollywood films are being released now, so here are the Japanese release dates:

Iron Man 2 - June 11
Toy Story 3 - July 10 - surprisingly early, and this could be a bad thing with the July competition. A week after Bayside Shakedown 3, opens against Pokemon which consistency opens to about $7m and finishes around $50m, then Studio Ghibli's latest comes on the 17th.
Inception - July 23
Robin Hood - Nov. 5
Shrek Forever After - Dec. 18 - I expect a bomb the size of Ice Age 3 with this one.
Eclipse - Unknown

Previous grosses:

Iron Man - 9m
Wall-E - $44m, Up - $54m (but these were Dec. releases)
Shrek the Third - $12.5m
New Moon - $2.5m

Japanese studio Toei is preparing a 3D version of Kinji Fukasaku’s cult action thriller Battle Royale,
which is one of the widest selling movies ever from Japan.

Quote:

Image

Released in 2000, the gore fest grossed $26m in Japan and sold to 35 territories worldwide. At the time of its release, Japanese politicians attempted to ban the film which depicts a group of delinquent students hacking each other to death on a deserted island.

Fukasaku’s son, Kenta Fukasaku, is supervising the 2D to 3D conversion in Tokyo through this production company Fukasaku-Gumi. Kinji Fukasaku passed away in 2003, so Kenta took over directing duties on a sequel, Battle Royale 2: Requiem, which was released later the same year.

The 3D version of the original will be ready for market screenings in October and released in Japan on November 20. Like the original, the 3D version will have an R-15 rating in Japan.

G: General Audiences, all ages admitted.
PG12: Some material may be inappropriate for children under the age of 12. Parental or adult accompaniment recommended.
R15+: No children under 15 admitted. The film contains adult themes, nudity, strong language, violence, and/or sex, etc. which is inappropriate for people under 15.
R18+: No children under 18 admitted. The film contains adult themes, detailed violence, explicit sex, sexual violence, pornographic content, hentai, and/or drug use, etc. which are unsuitable for people under 18.

The original movie is very good. It has an interesting story, and solid performances and isn't just a gore fest one might expect from the description. Quentin Tarantino has stated this is his favorite movie, and where he likely discovered Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo in Kill Bill).

The novel is also a good read.

When I attended Ohayocon last Jan., I snapped a shot of a guy cosplaying as a character from the movie: Image
Exploding collar ftw.
