Prince Caspian was a huge disappointment.
Also Gremlins 2 greatly disappointed too.

MadGez wrote: Prince Caspian was a huge disappointment. Agreed. I don't know that I would say that it's the most disappointing sequel at the box office, but it's definitely in the conversation. I was shocked when it opened $10 million under its predecessor, especially when nearly every single forecast had it opening somewhere in the $75-85 million range. And then it had hardly any staying power to speak of. I think the clearest sign of just how badly it missed the mark as far as expectations were concerned is that Disney turned down distribution of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. This was after the series was set to be their new live action cash cow, too.

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
Yeah, Indy and Iron Man just really took everything away for Caspian. Which was a shame as that's my favorite of the series. That 225 million price tag was ridiculous, as was moving it out of Christmas holiday. I mean it's biggest competition would have been The Day the Earth Stood Still. Also even though I expected it to drop domestically, I am really surprised how it did the smallest overseas.

Blair Witch 2, going from $140m to $26m in just one year is pretty pathetic.

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
I know this is a weird example but I always thought Scream 2's box office was a little disappointing. Obviously far from the most disappointing but come on, it opened ridiculously higher than the original but couldn't outgross it? And it had absolutely horrendous legs for a 1997 release and a holiday season release.

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
Scream 2 did really well. Its opening weekend was unprecedented for a December release at the time (even after a snafu with the actual theatre count sent the opening weekend estimate down more than six million), and it faced a massive amount of competition after it opened. Scream 3? Sure, it was a bit of a disappointment. Scream 4? Absolutely a disappointment. But Scream 2? Nah.

Yeah, what? Scream 2 was a sequel to a film that barely made it to $100 mil... and grossed over $100 mil.

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
And actually, there's only one other horror film that finished over $100 mil, and it's sequel did as well. And that is Paranormal Activity and Paranormal Activity THREE.

Scream 3? Sure, it was a bit of a disappointment. Scream 4? Absolutely a disappointment. But Scream 2? Nah. what I mean is that its legs were pretty shit for a December release (December releases are supposed to have some legs) and for a movie released in 1997 where legs in general were better. And it outopened the original by such a huge amount. Obviously, it is not even close to one of the biggest disappointment ever but I can see some mild disappointment there

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
I mean the fact that Scream 2 only dropped 2% in admissions makes it one of the most impressive horror sequels of all time. Also it had already been known, opened in almost 2 times as many theaters and managed a 3 multiplier. Not disappointing at all. I mean look at the audience retention to other sequels to horror films where the first is the biggest entry.
Scream 2- 98.4% Child's Play 2- 82% Final Destination 2- 78% Paranormal Activity 2- 74% The Ring 2- 54% Friday the 13th Part II- 53% I Still Know what you did last Summer- 53% Urban Legend: The Final Cut- 49% Halloween II- 45% Poltergeist II- 43% The Omen 2- 39.8% The Grudge 2- 34% Hostel II- 34% Jaws 2- 26% Exorcist 2- 13.3% Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2- 13%

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
No it's OW was ridiculously large for December - a 65% jump from the previous record set a year earlier by Beavis and Butthead do America. It's legs didn't matter seeing that it was a horror sequel. By today's standards it actually had decent legs.
And don't forget it then had competition from Titanic and Bond. Not easy competition!

And arguably darker, killing off the best character got a bad reaction too. Especially when the original script had Randy as the hero of the 2nd film. Dam beginning of internet ruining a film!!

as for Scream 4 I had a feeling it might not do that great after the really bland trailers but I never expected to do that bad. That was disgustingly bad that performance

The most disappointing is just a decrease of any amount. No Star Wars movie has ever made more than the first movie of its respective trilogy.

Re: What is the most disappointing box office for a sequel?
Age of Ultron is the most disappointing, right? I mean, when it opened to $175m (?), nobody really gave a shit. I've even forgot how much it opened to which is kind of telling at how unmemorable and disappointing it was. I'd honestly have to look it up to find out. Someone said "record or bust" and they were right.

Scream 4 is on my list of most surprising box-office performances at the time. In retrospect after American Reunion did the same thing it's more clear the reasons why it bombed, but at the time, I was expecting Scream 4 to open to the number its total ended up being

Stumbled upon Porky's box office performance, and the sequel's run must have felt pretty disappointing given the multiplier the first one had and it being released in the heart of the summer next year.
