I was working on loyal to see moolaade, but he passed up his chance when it came to a festival near him. Anyone from the new york area, sembene will be here to discuss the movie in person on the 21 and 23. I will so be there. I know, BE is not worse than his other films, but he's already peeked in popularity here is all. He got his Oscar and so now his fanbase can relax I guess. Talk to her is the financial peak for him. He'll never break ten over here because of his adherence to Spanish underground culture and sexual content. I don't suppose there are any stats on Moolaade are there? Are you going to start tracking this year's movies??? It would be interesting to see if any of us could predict (in the other thread) the biggest import, or how much. I still stand by no movie this year breaking 15 million, which is kind of sad considering the numbers last year.
Tisk tisk, Moolade is on the list on the front page Considering its rather sub-apr weekend grosses I am surprised the movie is actually still showing. It's holding on for quite a bit. It'll get past $200,000 but not much more probably. I'll compile its weekend-weekend performance in my next post just for you
I was going to start tracking this year's movies, but was going to ask for your permission first as you have already started a similar thread
As far as Almodovar goes, I think it's mostly the distributor's fault that Bad Education didn't get higher. Unlike Spain and most other parts of the world, Bad Education was much better received in the States that The Sea Inside. The distributor failed to play that car, however. I'll compile Bad Education's run as well and you'll see how amazing its PTA has been holding on over time and how the distributor failed to expand it when it was time to do so...

Oh the guess thread? That's ok, I guess you can either build it from there, or just start a new one. i don't know how to track numbers, one could say its not my forte, heh. So its all yours. Moolaade didn't have high pta because it has thus far only run in festivals. Its coming up next week as part of an African film festival, and when loyal had the chance to see it, it was part of a festival too. New Yorker films is the company that has picked them up here (African, and particularly all of Sembene's stuff). Its tiny and has no money. It hasn't even converted his stuff to dvd yet even with his rise in international notoriety. I'm sure they literally couldn't pull anymore prints, and just circulate the few they have. Too bad, critics were raving about it, it could have broken 1 million easy.
Bad Education has a great pta?!?! *pats self on back*

Bad Education had an exceptional PTA and exceptional PTA holds during the first weeks of its run. However, in those crucial moments, the distributor failed to expand the movie :???: I'll put up Bad Education's run next in this thread, so you see the pattern.
One thing I am also surprised about is why Moolaade wasn't considered for a Best Foreign Picture nomination. If it got one (and it could have with all the rave reviews, even from Ebert, I think), it'd have been expanded easily because there would be sponsors pushing the movie. Considering the poor distribution of it in the States, I doubt it'll ever get over here :???:

I'm pretty unsure of why the Oscar botch as well. :???: Both critics for the Boston Globe placed it at 4th on their top of the year lists too. I'm assuming it was some sort of technicality, because other entries this year weren't nearly so well received, and one of them even had a 2005 release date.
I guess people didn't want to watch a movie about young girls being circumsized?
Its the second in a trilogy he plans on, that began with Faat Kine. He's already started the third one, so hopefully that one will receive a bit better distribution. Those "No Data Available" weekends are probably because it didn't play. They pulled three reels is seems, and just had those travel around festivals. Must not have been any festivals going on those weekends.
That's pretty disheartening numbers.

I assume you mean The Chorus as the one with the 2005 release date. Well, it had a qualification run in 2004.
Moolaade is being released on DVD in UK on June 3rd, no US release date so far, though. With some more exposure it could have had a chance at a run similar to City of God:
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?pa ... yofgod.htm
But looks like the distributor couldn't afford to push the movie.
I find it hilarious how last year's most acclaimed and successful foreign movies were all not eligible for Best Foreign Picture: The Motorcycle Diaries, Maria Full of Grace, Bad Education, Moolaade, Bad Education and A Very Long Engagement.

As you can see, the PTA in its first four weeks was splendid and the movie barely dropped. Yet it took the distributor six weeks to come up with some kind of a majro expansion (to 50 theatres) and another seven weeks to hit 100 theatres. So overall it took 13 weeks after the release of the movie to get to 100 theatres. If they expanded it faster right away (like The Motorcycle Diaries), I guarantee, it'd have made $10 million.

The Sea Inside finally passed $2M this past weekend, a very good result considering the way it started.

It isn't a good result considering Fine Line paid more than $5 million to acquire it.

I updated the list. Bad Education, A Very Long Engagement, The Sea Inside and Moolaade seem to be the only foreign flicks of 2004 that are still on release. A Very Long Engagement came within $5,000 to Maria Full of Grace, I wonder if it'll overtake it and take the 4th spot.

I think after the first weekend, they would be quite happy. At the time, it didn't look like it will cross 500K, let alone 2M.

I wonder how much more Downfall would have grossed if helped by a Best Foreign Picture win

What about Ghost in the Shell 2?

Updated again. Seems like A Very Long Engagement and Bad Education ended their runs. That leaves only The Sea Inside and Moolaade still in theatres.
