EARLY INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT:
"Closer," the surprise winner of two Golden Globes last Sunday, is connecting with international audiences who made it the No. 1 film in all four of the major territories in which it opened this weekend.
Meanwhile, "The Incredibles" flew past the $600 million mark in global takings, becoming the 25th film to do so in motion picture history.
"Closer" opened at No. 1 in France, with $2.7 million; in Spain, with $1.2 million; in Brazil, with $750,000; and in Belgium, with $350,000.
Director Mike Nichols' adaptation of the famed Patrick Marber play held on to the top spot in the United Kingdom, where the release widened to include Ireland. The film took in $3 million in those territories. In Switzerland, "Closer" again reached No. 1, earning $520,000.
"Closer's" weekend estimate rose to $12.3 million for a total of $29.2 million from 21 territories. Natalie Portman and Clive Owen, won Globes for their supporting roles in the sexually frank drama.
"Ocean's Twelve" grossed $14.5 million from 58 countries over the weekend, including a $5.5 million bow in Japan, to take its haul to $170.5 million.
"The Aviator" earned $4 million from Germany, Austria and the United Kingdom this weekend, hoisting the tally to more than $11 million. The Howard Hughes biopic bowed at No. 2 behind "Blade 3" in both Germany and Austria.
"Ray" tuned in with $2.3 million after adding seven territories, including Britain and Italy, taking the foreign total to $4.4 million.
"Elektra" was off to a disappointing start in the United Kingdom where it opened at No. 5. The action-adventure starring Jennifer Garner also opened at No. 3 in Brazil, behind "Closer" and "Alexander."

Full Edition -
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason reached $200 million at the international box office last weekend, thanks to an estimated weekend gross of $2.5 million at 1,070 dates in 21 territories, which raised the UIP cume to $184,267,986. France, where it is being released by Mars, has grossed $15.5 million to date. There are still 7 more territories to open, including Japan in March. Bridget Jones's Diary, which was released in 2001, grossed $210 million at the international box office.
In Italy, Bridget held strong at No. 2 in its third weekend. It was behind Alexander (2nd weekend) and ahead of the opening of Saw. Its weekend tally was $1,616,694 at 270 dates, off 44% for a 17-day total of $11,011,209, which is 80% ahead of Bridget Jones's Diary.
Ray opened in 7 more territories last weekend including the U.K. and Italy, hoisting its international total to $4,250,292 In the U.K. the Jamie Foxx vehicle grossed a strong $911,294 from 224 screens, which is the result Universal was anticipating. In Italy Ray grossed $544,419 at 173 dates, which put it in fifth place on the chart. The film has gotten good reviews in both territories and the audience reactions are positive so it is off to a great start.
Ray wasn't too impressive outside of the powerhouse markets of Europe. In Argentina the picture grossed just $18,673 from 18 screens while in Israel it grossed $39,740 from 15 markets. In Scandinavia it was in super limited release, which led to very low numbers. Finland produced just $14,615 from 4 screens while Norway conjured up only $18,134 on 8.
Ray held extremely well in the German-speaking territories. In Germany the biopic of Ray Charles grossed $551,732 at 130 dates in Germany, off just 11% in its third weekend. It was No. 8 and the 18-day cume is $2,482,768. It is keeping pace with films like Lost in Translation and The Hours. In Austria the Oscar hopeful fell only 2% in its second weekend to $82,890 from 37 screens for a 10-day total of $219,084.
Alfie had surprising returns in Australia and South Korea last weekend, which led to a $1,447,406 weekend take from 440 screens in 17 markets for a $14,503,118 total. In Australia it grossed $679,323 from 145 screens for a fifth place finish. It was, however, even more potent in South Korea where it managed $344,570 from just 70 screens. After a strong run of $8,482,213 in the U.K. Alfie is having a solid run overseas. Its already passed the domestic take of $13,399,812 and should easily top $20 million.
Meet the Fockers played very well in Asian and Latin American debuts. Over the weekend the comedy grossed $4,576,807 from 951 screens in 10 markets for a $36,881,314 total (all information excludes Chile and Peru). In the Philippines the picture grossed a strong $345,956 from 44 screens. That topped its predecessor. In tsunami-ridden Indonesia the sequel still managed a decent $173,105 from 27 screens. Colombia's $263,832 from 57 screens was especially potent while Thailand's $243,981 from 40 was at the same level as Meet the Parents.
The Bourne Supremacy officially passed the century mark on Thursday and weekend numbers pushed its total to $100,389,326. The picture is tentatively schedule to release in its final market, Japan, on February 11. The Bourne Identity grossed $13,187,671 and its sequel will likely improve on that mark.

I saw Ray on Sunday, here, in Germany. Almost sold out theatre. Expect a long run for it here.
Amazing for Bridget Jones.

INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND REPORT (EXTENDED):
Closer had a stunning turnout over the weekend. The picture fell no more than 35% in all 8 of its holdovers and had superb starts in all 13 of its debuting territories. Of the openings, France stood out with its $2,935,093 premiere from 325 screens, another moderate screen count, which seems to be paying big dividends. The opening was on the same level as Erin Brockovich, which opened on 572 screens and easily out grossed Lost in Translation and The Hours. It had a similar reception in Belgium, grossing $376,514 from 28 screens. Closer also followed suit in Spain, grossing $2,093,655 from 265 screens for a yet unconfirmed placement. Closer opened in first place in Brazil, grossing $795,253 from 180. Closer even performed exceptionally well in Asia, a traditionally poor market for dramas. The Mike Nichols-helmed production produced $125,114 from just 7 screens in Hong Kong and $117,703 from 21 in Thailand.
Holdovers were just as good. In the U.K. Closer had its highest gross taking in $3,022,066 from 332 screens for a $7,706,650 total. It actually climbed by 10% over its opening weekend, perhaps because of its two wins for supporting actor and supporting actress at the Golden Globes. Closer fell only 29% in Germany to $1,639,885 from 474 screens for a $4,677,984 total. Mexico was off just 17% to $336,401 from 120 for a $1,033,649 total.
Closer's success has many factors. For one the film's start power seems to be drawing in large crowds in its opening weekends. Second, excellent reviews and positive word-of-mouth have kept people coming to the cineplex. Finally, its end-of-the-year awards have given it unusually long legs as shown in Italy where it is still in the Top 15 despite being in its seventh week of release.
Alexander passed the century mark thanks to a fine weekend abroad, which netted an estimated $9.5 million from 2,900 screens in 54 markets for a $103 million total. In Australia the Alexander the Great epic grossed $1.3 million from 187 screens for a second place finish behind Meet the Fockers, which is now in its fifth week. Alexander did, however, have the highest per screen average of the top 5 and bested The Patriot by 14%. In neighboring New Zealand the picture ranked first with a $194,300 gross from 46 prints.
In its second weekend in Italy Alexander retained the lead with an excellent $2.9 million haul from 500 prints. It fell only 25%, which is amazing considering its blockbuster debut. Its total grew to $8.1 million, which put it 45% ahead of Gladiator in the same time frame. In its sophomore session in Brazil the Oliver Stone epic fell to second place behind opener Closer with a $580,900 gross from 180 prints, pushing its total to $2.142 million.
Blade: Trinity had a phenomenal starts in Germany and Austria last weekend. Easily topping the market the final installment in the Blade franchise grossed $4,551,167 from 524 screens. That number almost matches blockbuster hits like Gladiator and XXX and tops Signs, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and The X-Files Movie. The number came as quite a surprise as Blade II grossed over $2 million less than Blade, which only grossed $12,776,631. Trinity should match that mark and probably surpass it. Neighboring Austria was just as impressive with a $873,036 debut from 86 screens. German Switzerland followed suit with a $413,791 opening on just 46 screens. With figures flying past both originals Blade: Trinity will pass both Blade's $61,095,812 total as well as Blade II's $72,601,778. The century mark isn't even out of the question.
Elektra had a decent reception in its first big week at the international box office. After a cold reception in Australia, which has produced just $2.5 million in two weeks, Elektra has had solid openings in Europe, Latin America, and especially Asia. In the U.K. the Jennifer Garner action-packed picture grossed $1.5 million on 330 screens, which was good enough for fifth place in a crowded market. Mexico produced $893,000 on 350 for second place and South Korea recorded $715,000 on 81 for fourth. Singapore was exceptionally well with $426,000 on 43 and Brazil had $332,000 on 176.
The Aviator had two excellent premiers as well as strong holds in all markets. The Howard Hughes biopic ranked second in its German premiere, grossing $2 million from 305 screens. The picture took $300,000 in its Austrian opening as well. Its German opening was just below what Closer did a week ago and over 100% better than what Ray did two weeks ago. Holdovers were excellent too with just a 7% fall to $1.76 million in the U.K. for a $6.9 million total and a 27% drop in Spain to $1.6 million on 390 screens for a $4.5 million total.
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason reached $200 million at the international box office last weekend, thanks to an estimated weekend gross of $2,298,804 at 1,029 dates in 20 territories, which raised the UIP cume to $184,262,719. France, where it is being released by Mars, has grossed $15.7 million to date. There are still 7 more territories to open, including Japan in March. Bridget Jones's Diary, which was released in 2001, grossed $210,386,368 at the international box office.
In Italy, Bridget held strong at No. 2 in its third weekend. It was behind Alexander (2nd weekend) and ahead of the opening of Saw. Its weekend tally was $1,616,693 at 270 dates, off 44% for a 17-day total of $11,011,209, which is 43% ahead of Bridget Jones's Diary.
Ocean's Twelve increased by 49% from the previous weekend to $14.4 million from 4,612 prints in 58 countries, thanks primarily to a superb start in Japan. Its total international gross climbed to $170.4 million with the U.K. ahead on February 4. In Japan the crime caper grossed $5.4 million from 510 screens in its opening two days. Including a one day sneak preview the picture had last Saturday, the total in Japan is a $6.8 million, which was 80% better than Ocean's Eleven and 131% better than Catch Me If You Can. With this debut and a British premiere looming Ocean's Twelve has an excellent shot at matching the original's $267.3 million total. Either way it will have a better percentage overseas than at home, which Ocean's Eleven also achieved taking in 59% of its worldwide gross from international markets.
National Treasure had two No. 1 debuts over the weekend, which helped it gross $6.1 million over the weekend for a $128.5 million total. The Nicolas Cage adventure picture grossed $289,000 in its Malaysian opening and $239,000 in its Argentinean debut.
A Very Long Engagement hasn't been performing too well in its non-French territories. However, with a wide release and decent returns its weekend gross was $1.066 million from 336 prints in 14 countries for a $40.3 million total.
In the U.K. it grossed a decent $580,500 from 121 screens. Its fairly mediocre start isn't much of a surprise as foreign language pictures rarely perform well there. Amelie set the benchmark for foreign language pictures with just a $824,370 opening from 82 screens. Engagement also premiered in Denmark ($75,3000 on 16) and Finland ($59,700 from 8) where it ranked in the top five films in each market.
Howl's Moving Castle drew $2 million in its second weekend in France, slipping only 6%, boosting its territory total to $4.6 million. Hayao Miyazaki's previous film Spirited Away played for eight weeks in the Top 10 ending up with $7.2 million. Moving Castle's total in Japan improved to a stunning $159.8 million.

As expected, Closer is performing superbly overseas. I expect its worldwide total to reach at least $120 million, maybe even more. The all-star cast is really drawing audiences overseas.
Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason looks to finish with around $260 million worldwide. If it wasn't for the stupid release strategy in the US, it might have made $300+ million WW.
Alexander is doing very well, as expected. It is outperforming King Arthur and should also outgross King Arthur's international gross. I see around $190 million for Alexander's worldwide total.

BOM has its international gross at $43,800,000 which puts the movie at a $154.2 million worldwide gross.

Considering the wide release and the 11 oscar nominations, I think we can expect a $10+ million weekend from The Aviator. It might go as high as $14 million.
Closer should do well in its holdovers and the openers will help to keep the weekend gross above $10 million once again.
Elektra's weekend gross might come close to $10 million as well, due to the wide release.
As for the others, Alexander, Ocean's Twelve and National Treasure shoould hold on well.

I would expect Fockers to get close to $10million as well, should have a huge opening in the UK (about £5million)

True that, I totally forgot about it. I think either Meet the Fockers or The Aviator will top the upcoming international weekend.

The Aviator will do the best from the weekend, higher than Arthur's prediction i feel, maybe something around $18 Million, as im guessing it has holdovers also.

I think it will fall in between your prediction and Dr. Lecter's. Somewhere around $14 million seems about right.

But is spongebob big over there? (I'm assuming that's where you're from? I thought it was pretty much an American 'toon.

Went to a Fockers preview last night - sold out on the hugest screen in one of the biggest theaters in s.w scotland. Had to que for the pre-booking machine and the ticket line went out to the end of the car park. Extrodinarily busy for a Thursday night- but the film was very well recieved. Should break January records easily in the UK
