For being older than FF Coppola stuff like the Last Duel isn't too bad of an effort.

The Martian was awesome, and he knows how to produce the scope to a script, the problem is the scripts and post production for most. I think of that old guard Spielberg and Eastwood are the best at it though. But their pre production teams for sniffing out projects are much better. Scorcese and Scott are great artists and will always direct in competence, but they've been getting burned by post production and weaker material to begin with. FFC has been shit since Apocalypse now which he even agrees with ruined his mind. Even though he did have some solid work since then.

Scott is a great director, but he's just made some mediocre stuff over the years as well.
Actually, between Gladiator and The Martian I didn't love anything (didn't see A Good Year), but recently, All The Money, Last Duel and Gucci are all hits for me.
Just Napoleon was kind of unimpressive again, he's shown to be able to bounce back, it's just that the Gladiator 2 trailer makes it look kind of bad, I'll still be looking to see what else he'll be making.

He is kind of keeping pace with Pacino through the end of the 90s where they're not same guy but he has some movies people like such as Dracula and the Rainmaker (and Godfather III if not compared to the rest of the series is decent). But then the wheels fall off.

I have soft spots for jack, cotton club, outsiders, Peggy sue too. And I still think the conversation is epic, a forgotten masterpiece. He’s secured his spot in history more than Malick, even though people go nut up for him.

Mescal's performance looks good, I'm thinking he will be the Leo in the Departed and Denzel will be the Jack.

Maybe Joker 2 flopping helps this tremendously? I feel the Romans are trendy again and there's going to need to be a big popcorn blockbuster that isn't a musical. I trust Denzel's audience to show up more than Joaquin's!

I was thinking about how the biggest winter films are younger audience friendly in Moana, Mufasa, Beetlejuice, Sonic, Wicked, etc. We're going to need Gladiator 2 or Venom to be the adult male event of the winter now that Joker has died.

I'm also seeing locally already a fair number of tickets sold for Friday and Saturday evenings. Denzel's getting this at least to $100M+. Add in Thanksgiving, nostalgia 24 years later, more open market, Joker failure and maybe we can get an overperformance.

$100M+ total. Denzel adjusted now makes a Joker 2 type scenario not possible here. His fans very reliably show up.

This thread is improbable. Nothing about its sales so far indicate its a 100m opener and its not doing > 4x legs for sure. That said this movie doing 150m domestic makes it a big success and as I am expecting good run OS as well.

I want to see this and likely will, but… the trailer I’ve seen a few times in theaters is like really really bad. Who the fuck made that thing? it’s incoherent storywise, awkwardly edited, the music choice is terrible, potential “money shots” are just tossed willy nilly into the chaotic mess and thus wasted, and the whole thing feels like two minutes too long.
