Optics are interesting that AMC and Taylor pretty much will deliver the biggest OW possibly of the year if it materializes past Barbie and not have actors or studios involved.

Watch Taylor become a billionaire by the end of the year if she isn't one already. That concert tour doing $1B+ and likely getting 80% of box office revenue I'd bet and it's going to be a nice Christmas for her!

*Insert Mother of God jpg*

She wasn't THIS big a few years ago, what the hell happened since COVID? I feel like she went from being a really big pop star/celebrity but one that still felt like 'just another star', to a Michael Jackson level megastar that has people in a frenzy over the last couple years. Was it the re-recordings saga? The alt folky albums she did with the guy from The National? The tour?

I thought about this too. How did she get THIS big? Think her dealings with Kanye, Scooter resonate with a lot of people who have dealt with challenging people but she's managed to stay positive. Post pandemic an overly positive happy experience resonates.

But #1 reason is she's understated incredibly business savvy or surrounds herself by incredibly smart people. Taylor's business acumen feels like a Warren Buffet type in her industry.

The pandemic ironically made her huge. Folklore/evermore made her more respected as an artist, and the rerecordings helped people check out her older albums. The tour has been a constant on tiktok for months. Perfect storm.

Guys, we are about to witness whats the maximum capacity of theaters really is.

This will sell out 100% of all showings it gets. It wouldnt shock me if AMC has nothing but Taylor that weekend.

It's gonna be a fucking MONSTER. And yes I am IN

Anyone saying $200 OW is not likely clearly has no idea the pull that Taylor Swift has in 2023. The Eras Tour is THE pop culture phenomenon of our lifetime. She’s as big as Michael Jackson right now and is only getting BIGGER as the days go on.

Post Re: TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film $300M+ Club
Quote:
When Taylor Swift announced early Thursday morning on Instagram that “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” will be theatrically presented in nearly all domestic and many international theaters for four weekends beginning October 13, all hell broke loose.

The concert film (Is it a recording of a full concert, or something with more cinematic shaping? Unclear, but assume Swifties would not mind a straightforward presentation) is certain to be one of the year’s biggest grossing theatrical events. Already it’s selling out many theaters and creating delays at some exhibitor presale websites. The distributor of record is AMC’s own distribution arm and it’s by far the most significant release in its history; previously, it handled the minor releases of small films at its own theaters. AMC also published a press release.

And until that early-morning press release, the studios didn’t have a clue.

Multiple sources told IndieWire that distribution execs — who might be very, very interested to know about the wide release of a concert film that captures the billion-dollar, sold-out global tour of a cult-like figure with armies of fans — learned about this from either the press release or an early-morning phone call from the exhibitor-distributor.

The only exhibitors who knew about the deal were the film’s partners, AMC and Cinemark; other theaters are now playing catchup. AMC, the nation’s largest circuit also chose not to tip off its studio partners and that’s causing major anger.

Then again, perhaps turnabout is fair play. There’s no indication that, say, Warner Bros. conferred with exhibitors before deciding to pull the Nov. 3 release of would-be blockbuster “Dune 2” and moving it into spring. That weekend will now be the final for the “Eras Tour” release — unless, of course, it’s held over.

Swift and her representatives chose AMC Theaters Distribution as the distributor of record for the U.S.; Cinemark and other circuits will handle foreign territories. However, the concert is not exclusive to any exhibitor; in the U.S., New York-based Variance will book the film for other theaters. It’s expected to open on more than 4,000 screens, which could impact the October box office.

Universal, which previously had the only new film on October 13, has moved Jason Blum’s much-anticipated “The Exorcist: The Believer” to October 6. That’s neither cheap nor optimal: Advance marketing already has the original date, with advertising committed.

The next weekend, Paramount plans the wide release of Martin Scorsese’s “The Killers of the Flower Moon” ahead of its Apple streaming. Days ago, Paramount announced that “Killers” would skip a October 6 limited-release and move straight into wide. Now, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro might face competition with Swift for IMAX and premium screens. That’s particularly troubling since the drama’s screenings are already limited by its 3.5-hour runtime. For now, all IMAX venues checked show no on-sales for either film on the weekend of October 20.

Most of all, this is an aggressive, gloves-off move among the gentlepersons’ agreements that generally guide theater bookings. Distributors don’t surprise each other with release dates. Studios expect to have the lead time to defend their films’ priority at theaters. With Swift, AMC has committed screens for multiple weekends and made their unavailability a fait accompli.

Sources suggest the terms of this release, including its announcement, are dictated by Swift’s team, not AMC. The concert’s ticket prices are preset at $19.89 for adults, $13.13 for children not including taxes and fees. That’s unusual, if not illegal; distributors are prohibited from dictating tickets prices and it’s unclear what loophole might have been used here. That also violates industry norms of variable pricing for matinees, senior discounts, and different regions. Manhattan and Los Angeles theaters cost more than a small Midwestern town, but not here. Also disregarded are theaters’ benefit programs like AMC Stubs.

My one issue there is that most of the $200M+ openers got there with Thursday previews, and not only will this movie not have Thursday previews, but its Friday showtimes don't even start until 6pm. So even with the surcharges it would need to be at Endgame levels to go that high.

But $150M OW is certainly possible. Not sure I'd predict it yet but it's possible.

I hope they at least let the shows start early on Friday. That will let friday have as many shows as sat/sun. Currently it has slightly more than half of weekend shows.

According to that indiewire article, Keyser Soze posted, AMC (domestic distributor), Cinemark (international distributor), and a few others knew about this plan before the press release. So the major studios (Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Universal) were not informed. So the movie theaters must be hoping Swift's Tour doesn't sell too many tickets that forces them to cut screens for other films that were already booked for October 2023. Otherwise a breach in contract could invite legal trouble for the movie theaters.

Apple should really move up Killers of the Flower Moon to the same weekend to recreate Barbenheimer buzz.

Easily in the $300m club, which to me is worst case scenario floor, Average movie ticket price is $10.53 which is 53% of $19.89. Let’s say 20% of the audience is under 18 at $13.13, that still makes avg ticket price $18.54. Taylor Swift only needs to gross $170m equivalent in usual movie ticket price for $300m equivalent ($10.53/$19.89*$300m). So if it sells same amount of tickets as say Sound of Freedom, that would already be over $300m.

How long is Eras playing for? 1 week? 2 weeks? Or no limit?

I am in for 300m club as well. I am expecting over half that number OW itself. Friday shows start at 6PM in US(in Canada its starting earlier) but sat/sun already are at blockbuster level show times and I have not tracked any movies that have sold so many tickets. It has sold over 800K tickets already over 3 days !!! ATP is over $20 as premium formats are even more expensive. Plus as other chains started their sales later, they will take some time to ramp up. I am expecting AMC ratio to be lower as smaller chains ATP would be like 2x normal movies !!! I am expecting Sat/Sun to hit over 60m each.

My guess is it will do so well for theaters that it will continue to play past Christmas into winter break holidays, Cinemas will not be able to resist the higher profit margin on Swift-branded popcorn and soda versus their regular concession sales, giving them another incentive to play the movie as long as possible.

I doubt WB consulted with theaters on the Dune shift and studios pretty much threw theaters under the bus on their streaming platforms probably with little notice during the pandemic so I feel like AMC will be able to get it through. There's a strike so there's a dearth of product in the fall anyway.

Lastly, AMC is a meme stock and if studios raise a public stink about it and go at AMC they also have to deal with Swifties if they spoke negatively about the film's release. So AMC will be fine I think!

I didn't even read this thread fully. I was thinking it was for 300 opening weekend. I'd be in for that. Crazy, but I don't think it's impossible. So 300+ total is a no brainer to me.

It's in theaters for 4 weekends. Not showing during the week. So that should soften the weekend drops a bit.

I think Taylor's rise to Michael status has been largely because she is a content generating machine in the Age of Content. There's never any point in time that Taylor Swift is not in the news for something or another. It could be a new album, a remake of an old album, a gigantic world tour and the resulting backlash against ticketmaster, romances and feuds with other celebrities, pictures of cats and now this movie. She's always gaining new fans and yet has somehow never done anything to alienate the old ones.
