Seems like this club is too easy. What about Barbie $400M AND Oppenheimer $400M?

Tracking is now closer to $120-130m. I’m not convinced it can get to $400m from there but I’m in.

Regardless - this is clearly one of the most exciting BO weekends ever. There is a chance the top 4 alone edge towards $250m this weekend.

I've read that presales for Barbie is the highest since Wakanda Forever. Wakanda Forever's true 1st Friday was $55.3 million. Keyser Soze is reporting that Barbie's 1st true Friday is tracking to be greater than $50 million. So Barbie's first weekend could be (50/55.3)*181.3 = $164 million. Both Barbie and Beauty and the Beast have musical numbers. If Barbie has Beauty and the Beast's 2.88 legs, then Barbie could end up with 164*2.88 = $472 million. I voted for the $400 million club for Barbie.

Also hearing comparisons to Multiverse of Madness numbers. So yeah, looking like a huge breakout even if it hits "just" ~$160m.

And importantly could mean - Mario Bros + Barbie = first yearly top 2 without a sequel since 2000/2001

Oppenheimer Imax/PLF numbers are going to be MEGA.

Here in Melbourne, it has broken all IMAX records - smashing The Force Awakens. Bodes well.

I am seeing 175/510 for Barbie and 90/400 for Oppenheimer. Imax and 70mm are selling great into its 4th weekend here. Its presales are crazy strong beyond OW.

Believe this is the first time ever we could possibly see two $400M+ movies open wide the same weekend. We've gotten close:

-Incredibles 2 opened 1 week before JW: Fallen Kingdom
-SW Ep.8 opened 5 days before Jumanji
-HG: Catching Fire and Frozen opened on the same day but Frozen was limited.

Poor MI. It will have not one but TWO $400M films in its second weekend. If Sound somehow legs it to $300M it will have dealt with 3 $300M+ movies in its first two weekends.

MI can at least save face with a $200M total but it by far now looks like it has the worst release date of the year.

Oppenheimer will still need very strong legs to get to 400m, even with a 100m OW, which is far from guaranteed at this point

Possible for Barbie if it indeed behaves like a big blockbuster, but for Oppenheimer?? It just seems too unrealistic. Would be amazing though. Anything to show Hollywood that it's better to make 3hr long auteur movies rather than Fast & Furious 15.

Are you expecting it to collapse after OW. I can tell you presales are extremely strong well beyond OW. I have never seen so many tickets sold for opening Monday so far ahead and also for 2nd weekend. Plus the universal rave will pull in audience who otherwise dont come to movies. I am expecting this to play like Maverick in that respect.

Anyway wait until Friday numbers come in. 200m would look like rookie numbers :-)

Mmm... say it opens to 90m. A 4.4 multiplier is still a pretty high bar but we will see.

My expectation based on Monday Presales its going to have crazy low drop though norm is for Adult movies to drop harder in summer.

As much as there is the B+O double feature buzz on social media, most people don't have 5 hours of free time to watch both movies in one day.

Think that really helps Oppenheimer next weekend. Barbie is the main show for a lot of people this weekend while Oppenheimer will likely steal the show next weekend.

The anniversaries coming up on 6 and 9 August 1945 of Hiroshima and Nagasaki could also keep this as a cultural event into its 3rd and 4th weekends.

Then wouldn't be surprised to see university/college screenings in the fall. Would have gotten more school showings but has an R rating.

Oppenheimer making 400m would seem insane without the Barbieheimer phenomenom. Does this combo help its total that much or does it just make it more frontloaded?

I'm starting to believe

I'm expecting very strong legs yes. I was just thinking that the OW would still be around $50m or so considering it's a long film and that normal theatres would not be as packed as PLF. However, it is looking like it will open bigger and hold better than originally expected.

I think there will be a backlash to Barbie, which wears its feminist themes on its sleeves. The Internet think tanks will crank out anti-Barbie opinions fast I think, and in recent years, they have proven successful in controlling the cultural zeitgeist. That being said, I do think the Barbie hype train is too big to stop it from climbing to 400m.

Ive just seen oppenheimer, its a good film but knowhere near Nolan's best and its not very accessible to normal moviegoers to have the legs to get to 400m.
