Another good Friday for Sideways. Last weekend's multiplier was off due to New Year eve. Using the earlier weekends as reference, it should have a 1.9-2.0M weekend.

Here is the movie's run so far:

Weekend - Weekend gross - % Change - Theatres - (PTA) - Total gross

Weekend 1 - $207,042 - NEW - 4 - ($51,760) - $207,042

Weekend 2 - $404,605 - +95.4% - 16 - ($25,287) - $710,076

Weekend 3 - $1,047,607 - +159% - 66 - ($15,872) - $1,917,590

Weekend 4 - $1,414,773 - +35.0% - 144 - ($9,824) - $3,751,301

Weekend 5 - $1,828,760 - +29.3% - 279 - ($6,554) - $6,039,004

Weekend 6 - $2,912,836 - +59.3% - 497 - ($5,860) - $9,950,066

Weekend 7 - $1,802,826 - -38.1% - 499 - ($3,612) - $12,478,931

Weekend 8 - $1,240,534 - -31.2% - 475 - ($2,611) - $14,273,198

Weekend 9 - $1,502,800 - +21.1% - 424 ($3,544) - $16,511,317

Weekend 10 - $1,169,527 - -22.2% - 359 - ($3,257) - $18,500,087

Weekend 11 - $2,150,398 - +83.8% - 370 ($5,811) - $22,404,206

Weekend 12 - $1,907,439 - -11.3% - 365 - ($5,225) - $25,123,613

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The drop is great considering that the movie was coming off a 80+% increase last weekend and didn't add any theatres, but in contrast actually lost a couple. The PTA is still among the best during its run and it's impressive that the movie's current total gross is just $2 million shy off Finding Neverland's gross which has already had some weekends with 1,000+ theatres. I am pretty certain Sideways will have an increase next weekend and at least $30 million by the time of its expansion.

Weekend 13 - $2,164,549 - +13.5% - 370 ($5,850) - $28,046,995

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sideways had the best PTA since its 6th weekend and that is really amazing. The movie is on its way to pass $30 million next weekend and it hasn't ever been in more than 499 theatres yet. If, by any chance, this movie wins the Best Picture award, I wouldn't rule out a total gross of $100 million.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sideways has passed $30 million now and with the upcoming Oscar nominations and the expansion, it should be a lock to cross $60 million by the end of its run. The PTA is still amazing too.

Anyone want to predict the upcoming weekend gross for Sideways? I'd say $5.1 million

ACADEMY AWARDS 2005:

Nominatons for Sideways:

Best Picture
Best Director - Alexander Payne
Best Supporting Actor - Thomas Haden Church
Best Supporting Actress - Virgina Madsen
Best Adapted Screenplay

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd say the overall number of 5 nominations is somewhat disappointing for Sideways considering the amount of acclaim it is getting from the critics. In particular, Paul Giamatti's snub is surprising. On the other hand, those are all major nominations and should help to boost this movie's box-office.

Yeah, but with Giamatti's snub and inclusion of Eastwood in best actor, the talk for best picture will turn to The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby. That will hurt Sideways' overall box office potential, and it will probably finish short of $70M.

I think it will earn at least 5m this coming weekend. Best Picture nominees tend to have minimal drops until the Oscars, so I think it will earn over 30m from this point on at the least. I do think it will reach 70m.

It will hurt the potential somewhat, but the movie will still benefit immensly. I think there is a difference between Sideways and Million Dollar Baby. Million Dollar Baby is a movie for everyone to see with a boxer story and a star cast of Freeman and Eastwood. It would have been seen by general audiencs, even if it wasn't nominated for so many oscars.

As for Sideways, this is a kind of a movie that doesn't attract general audiences. It stars no well-known actors (I don't think anyone besides avid film fans knows Giamatti) and the story of the film is nothing outstanding. This is a movie for well-informed movie fans like us, but does it really appeal too much to everyone, at least not from what people get to see of it in the previews. The oscar nominations for two cast members, the movie itself and the director will draw a lot of attention to this movie. The oscars is the best possible advertisement for such a small movie as Sideways.

As of now, I expect a total gross of around $75 million for Sideways.

Weekend 15 - $6,347,364 - +122.6% - 1,694 - ($3,746) - $40,054,672

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally Sideways was expanded and that with great success. The PTA dropped just a mere 8% in comparison to last week despite adding 995 theatres. Looks like the Oscar nominations really bossted the film's profile, even moreso than they did to Lost in Translation last year. At the moment, Sideways is just $4.5 million shy off Lost in Translation's total gross and should pass it next weekend with ease. Sideways will keep great legs at least until the Academy Awards, giving it a good shot at $80+ million in total.

For the next weekend, I see a slight drop to around $5 million.

true, but I hue M$B, TA, and Sideways can somehow hold up and get over the mark, it would be a great acomplishment for all of them

Million Dollar Baby might make $100 million if it wins Best Picture. Then and only then.

The Aviator is almost a lock for $100 million as of now.

Finding Neverland won't even hit $50 million, I think.

Sideways has a chance at hitting $80-85 million, but not $100 million.

nice projections I like them  I still have hopes for sideways it was great  I think your right about FN it just increase much more with theater expantion its probably in the max it will get so 50m is someihing that this film will have a very hard time reaching if it does get there. I think that M$B will get 100m its showing a lot more potential than the aviator ever did so we will just have to wate and see

It should hit around $45 million before its run is over, and depending on how many (if any) awards it wins, it could top $50 million but not much beyond that.

Well, Sideways' amazing run continues. Surprisignly, Sideways won the Best Ensemble Award at this year's Screen Actor Guild awards. t also managed to have the smallest drop in the TOP 12 last weekend as well as the best drop in the TOP 20 for a movie that did not add over 100 theatres. This is quite a feat, I'd say. Its PTA has also remained pretty steady. It's still the 6th best PTA in the TOP 12, even higher than The Aviator's PTA. At the moment, I'd say that Sideways is a lock for $70 million domestically, but its total gross might get as high as $80+ million depending on the outcome of the Academy Awards.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is just amazing. Despite losing over 150 theatres, Sideways just dropped a mere 4% last weekend and its PTA actually rose. At this point there is no doubt that the film will break $70 million, but there is hope for more.
