I updated the list.
The Sea Inside continues with its unimpressive performance despite being loved by many critics and winning quite a couple awards.
Looks like the expansion came too late for House of Flying Daggers and especially A Very Long Engagement. The latter cracked the TOP 5 of foreign movies 2004, but I doubt it'll get much further. House of Flying Daggers looks to top out just above $10 million.
Overall, there is no denying the fact that at the moment Spanish-speaking (Maria Full of Grace, The Motorcycle Diaries, Bad Education) and Chinese (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) flicks are overall the best performing foreign pictures on the market.

Warner Independent president Mark Gill said that if "A Very Long Engagement" grosses $5 million or better in America, he'll be very happy.

Oscar nominations for Foreign Movies 2004:
The Sea Inside:
Best Foreign Picture
Best Make-Up
The Motorcycle Diaries:
Best Adapted Screenplay
Best Song
A Very Long Engagement:
Best Cinematography
Best Costume Design
House of Flying Daggers:
Best Cinematography
That's a total of seven nominations. It's refreshing to see foreign movis being nominated in different categories. However, I feel that House of Flying Daggers was snubbed in many technical categories. Out of the nominees, I think The Sea Inside will benefit the most from its nominations considering its rather low gross so far.

I updated the first post. No significant changes, only Bad Education keeps climbing up the list.

Ouch for House of Flying Daggers - it won't reach my projected 15m!
Also I'm not quite happy with the gross of The Motorcycle Diaries - it should have made much more!! (one of the best films this year) :???:

I updated the list. The oscar nominations obviously didn't help The Sea Inside much as it just rose 5% over the weekend.
In other news, A Very Long Engagement has finally crossed $5 million, while House of Flying Daggers is very close to crossing the $10 million mark.

Updated the original list, even though there aren't too many changes.
The Sea Inside has finally started climbing up the list with its slight expansion. With a (very likely) Best Foreign Picture win, it'll finish with around $2 million in the USA.
A Very Long Engagement has continued its average, yet steady run. It'll cross $6 million eventually and probably become last year's 4th biggest foreign film in the States. Yet, it could have been bigger.
House of Flying Daggers has finally crossed $10 million. With another $75 million overseas, there is nothing to complain about.

However, Sony paid about $12 million to acquire "House of Flying Daggers".
(Unreasonable price.... Universal Pictures only paid few hundred thousand dollars to acquire "Brotherhood of the Wolf".)

Well, I think the success of Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had their hopes up.

Sony acquired "House of Flying Daggers" before "Hero" enjoyed huge success in US.
In fact, many kung-fu movies were acquired for unreasonable high price. Miramax paid about $10 million to pre-buy "Zu Warriors" in early 2001, buy then shelved it for more than three years.
"Zu Warriors" will finally open wide on 8/19/05, but I don't know that the release date is for original version or Miramax's re-edited version.
PS: Having seen "Zu Warriors" original version , I think that it should be (straight -to-video).

Re: Foreign Movies 2004 - Updated
Dr. Lecter wrote: In the light of the release of House of Flying Daggers, I decided to take a look at the box-office of this year's foreign movies. This year has been decent for foreign movies so far. While none of them broke box-office records a couple did a pretty decent amount of money and others still keep going in theatres. However, none has reached Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon standards. Put of all, it was the long-delayed Hero that managed to become the year's most successful foreign movie (with the exception of The Passion of the Christ which I don't really consider foreign)
Here are this year's most successful foreign movies so far:
1. Hero - $53,614,094 2. The Motorcycle Diaries - $16,756,372 * 3. House of Flying Daggers - $10,412,328 * 4. Maria full of Grace - $6,529,624 5. A Very Long Engagement - $5,869,336 * 6. Good Bye, Lenin - $4,064,200 7. Bad Education - $3,780,215 * 8. Veer Zaara - $2,938,532 9. Intimate Strangers - $2,110,589 10. Main Hoon Na - $1,722,453 11. I'm not Scared - $1,615,328 12. Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman - $1,118,163 13. Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War - $1,111,061 14. Rosenstrasse - $734,519 15. The Sea Inside - $680,171 * 16. Twilight Samurai - $559,765 17. Love me if you Dare - $553,129 18. Shaolin Soccer - $489,600 19. Strayed - $482,757 20. Zelary - $330,033 21. Ju-On: The Grudge - $325,680 22. Valentin - $275,968 23. Moolade - $152,381 *
* - still in release
I only listed movies that made at least $0.1 million at the US-box-office this year. As the Oscar season has just started, we can expect more higher grossing foreign movies soon.

Monsieur Ibrahim was released in December 2003 and I count Bon Voyage as a 2003 release as well because of the 2003 release in Canada.
Thanks a lot for the Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring, though! I added it to the list.
In other news, A Very Long Engagement looks to pass Maria Full of Grace soon and The Sea Inside keeps climbing up the chart.

I updated the list.
The Sea Inside won Best Foreign Picture at the Oscars, as expected. Expect a bog boost for it now and a total north of $2 million.

I decided not to count the Academy Qualification run, since there is no box-office data about it anyway and I still want to save some foregn movies for 2005 actually But thank you

Well, this is probably one of my last updates of this thread....
The Sea Inside is doing okay, but not too impressive considering a Best Foreign Picture win. It'll cross $2 million soon, but won't make much more.
A Very Long Engagement and House of Flying Daggers both left the charts with the latter finally topping $11 million, In the end the box-office results of these movies in the USA turned out to be mildly disappointing.
Bad Education is still grossing money (much to Dolce's joy ) and broke $5 million a while ago. The results are still below Almodovar's other works like Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown ($7.2 million), All About my Mother ($8.3 million) and Talk to Her ($9.3 million).

Amen brother. I think I even convinced Mav to go see it! Ztoo bad he'll hate it, but oh well. I was working on loyal to see moolaade, but he passed up his chance when it came to a festival near him. Anyone from the new york area, sembene will be here to discuss the movie in person on the 21 and 23. I will so be there.
I know, BE is not worse than his other films, but he's already peeked in popularity here is all. He got his Oscar and so now his fanbase can relax I guess. Talk to her is the financial peak for him. He'll never break ten over here because of his adherence to Spanish underground culture and sexual content.
I don't suppose there are any stats on Moolaade are there?
Are you going to start tracking this year's movies??? It would be interesting to see if any of us could predict (in the other thread) the biggest import, or how mucg. I still stand by no movie this year breaking 15 million, which is kind of sad considering the numbers last year.

Despite overly mild grosses for some foreign movies in the US, quite a couple of them have a great worldwide gross to boot.
Here's a list of highest-grossing foreign movies 2004 wordwide:
1. Hero - $176,210,019
2. House of Flying Daggers - $90,250,094
3. Good Bye, Lenin! - $79,384,880
4. Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War - $69,827,583
5. A Very Long Engagement - $68,446,355
6. The Motorcycle Diaries - $57,641,466
7. Shaolin Soccer - $42,776,760
8. Bad Education - $39,470,153
9. Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman - $31,483,747
10. The Sea Inside - $27,758,721
11. Main Hoon Na - $10,823,343
12. Maria Full of Grace - $9,383,264
13. Spring, Summer, Fall Winter...and Spring - $8,611,960
14. Love me if you Dare - $$8,518,541
15. Intimate Strangers - $7,120,939
16. Rosenstrasse - $6,077,816
As you see, every single movie in the TOP 10 made over $25 million worldwide. Enough to turn out a success. Especially Asian movies scored well (five among the first ten), but also a surprise German success is among the top-grossers
