14 million dollars' worth of people paid to see What the Bleep Do We Know!? in 2004, which is a bit of a holy-shit fact. ;)

I was among them, sadly, though, in my meager defense, I left around 30 minutes in.

That film's entire run, week-to-week, is very WTF-worthy.

Space Jam adjusts to only $163,960,300

you would think that film would have been bigger considering it had Michael Jordan, the Looney Tunes, and Bill Murray and how well known it still seems to be

Last Tango in Paris, an artful, X-rated romantic drama, adjusts to $164.4 million today. Could you imagine an NC-17 film making even 1/10 of that money today?

ETA: Also, A Clockwork Orange adjusts to $125.9 million, and Midnight Cowboy to $253 million (!) despite being both X-rated when they opened.

I mean, 164m adjusted is hardly minor.

Though at the time it seemed slightly disappointing as MJ was huge. In hindsight it did ok. But it still did less than Jumanji.

Hmm? 2002 came on the heels of the 2001 sequel explosion trend.

The consensus was that it as expected to drop from the first film so it kind of didn't really disappoint but perhaps could have done $30-$40m more.

Summer 2002 was funny in that May exploded with Spider-man and Star Wars (and Spidey being the only film to have beaten a SW film in its year) and then June was generally disappointed. The summer then didn't really get back on track until mid/late July where it exploded.

It was really with Pirates 2 and Shrek 2 that massive sequel hits actually increased and became all time hits.

Continued with TF2 and and TDK and others.

Sort of died down with IM2 then

Idk I recall a fair amount of $275-325m predictions for it.

Yeah, but 2001 started the consistent trend of sequels seeing significant gains between The Mummy Returns, Rush Hour 2, and American Pie 2 trio.

The difference with MIB2 was that it felt like an unwanted sequel and most realistic predictions (and industry expectations) had it pegged just below the original. It also was released 5 years after the first where as RH, AP and Mummy 2 all came out 2-3 years after the original. Those films were big but not MIB big and hence MIB2 couldn't really build on the original.

yes and less than movies like Casper and Flinstones and didn't even cross the 100m mark. If I was a Warner executive I'd have been disappointed.

It wasn't appreciated until it hit video. Much like many cult films - ie. Fight Club. However, Shawshank went very mainstream on video.

But they'd all be R-rated if they opened today, so the comparison is pointless.

Clockwork and Midnight Cowboy have been re-rated since then to R, but they still had the same restrictions that an NC-17 movie would when they opened, and still did gangbusters. Also, Last Tango was re-rated NC-17 in the '90s, so the comparison is perfectly valid there.

I can't believe Dune only adjusts to 72m. Sure it wasn't a good movie but you would think the popularity of the book alone would get it higher than that

You'd be wrong. The book wasn't popular among mainstream audiences, and they were absolutely baffled by the film. For a time, it was considered a notorious flop, mentioned alongside other turkeys like Howard the Duck and Ishtar.

I like to see the adjusted gross of Julia Robert's movie....adjusted those numbers look so very huge now.

My Best Friend's Wedding - $222,944,700
Conspiracy Theory - $133,259,700
Stepmom - $149,090,300
Notting Hill - $183,961,000
Runaway Bride - $241,250,100
Erin Brockovich - $187,577,300
The Mexican - $95,071,100
America's Sweethearts - $133,134,600
Ocean's Eleven - $258,201,700
Mona Lisa Smile - $83,551,800
Closer - $43,704,000
Ocean's Twelve - $161,611,300

After American's Sweethearts she didn't really succeed too much on her own but she was just so HUGE back then. Many actresses will die to have such resume.....

I believe with Twilight and Hunger Games we can call both Stewart and Lawrence on a roll though, not only that the films outside of those have done fine as of now for both actress.

Wow, Runaway Bride was a runaway success. The pairing of Gere and Roberts was just too much for some people. They were masturbating about it being a sequel of sorts to Pretty Woman.

As with the thrillers of the 90s, I believe that the segment of the population that went out to see Julia Roberts eventually got older and became less enthusiastic about going out to the theater. And when you're not a box office draw, studios stop building high-profile projects around you.

Yeah, while most of the grosses there are not holy shit for Julia its just so good to see how she managed to draw big movies over that entire stretch. Its not that these movies would have done good by themselves it was her presence that made some of these movies BIG.
