Also, good luck to JJK0 on the international stage! Certainly not expecting a repeat of Demon Slayer overseas, but it could still bring in some decent numbers in some markets, especially since many are likely in a better situation than they were when DS was playing.

I need some clarification about Monster, Inc which was reported ¥9.49B in Eiga.com (https://eiga.com/ranking/20040120/) but it was revised downwards to ¥9.37B in All-Time Charts at 歴代興収ベスト100.
Again why Pokemon The First Movie was revised downward on Dec 2019 (From ¥7.6B → ¥7.24B)

Again, how did Spirited Away immediately gained ¥400M from ¥30.4B to ¥30.8B back in 2016.

One interesting article about Princess Mononoke (http://www.renya.com/ghibli/mononoke.htm)

That's interesting about Monsters, Inc. I've actually never seen the ¥9.49 billion total before. My only guess is it was a typo on Eiga's article there just because I've never seen it anywhere else. Have you?

I've never seen Pokemon at ¥7.24 billion. It's at ¥7.54 billion (is that what you meant?). I do recall see it at ¥7.6 billion sometimes in the past, but it might just have been the case of sources rounding up on it. (I know if we round it'd be ¥7.5 billion, but since it was over that, they may have gone up to ¥7.6 billion). It's still common to see rounded figures in some news articles (think more non-movie based sources like Yahoo! or something) since most readers aren't too concerned over it.

Spirited Away's original gross was ¥30.4 billion, and that was its reported gross for a really long time. It eventually got updated to ¥30.8 billion following a re-release for its 15th anniversary, I believe. (And once more to ¥31.68 billion after its 2020 re-release).

Good article on Princess Mononoke. I'm pretty sure I've seen this years back, and it's where we got its opening weekend, when it hit ¥10 billion (day 44), and when it surpassed E.T. to become the #1 film all-time. Thanks for sharing it here, Kanroji.

Nope, Monster, Inc numbers looks suspicious. Though, Cinema Today says ¥9.5B (Courtesy link is on spoiler)

BTW, Pokemon The First Movie (at present) place ¥7.24B. You can check charts at 歴代興収ベスト100, where it ranks 92nd.... You can check the archived link (above) where it was rounded off at ¥7.6B

Another Important Thing that is puzzling me is the OW numbers of Spirited Away.... ¥1.614B or ¥1.63B (っ˘̩╭╮˘̩)っ

Not sure on Monsters, Inc. Both Eiren and Kogyotsushin have always had ¥9.37 billion.

Pokemon is the real off one here because I could have sworn it was ¥7.54 billion. I never caught it being revised, if it was. But now that I'm checking every source I have... they all have ¥7.24 billion now. I haven't checked these in a long time, so I don't know when it changed. Almost feels like the Mandela effect going on here. I'll edit it the next time I update the Top 100. Very unusual.

EDIT: Spirited Away should likely be ¥1.614 billion. ¥1.630 billion seems like a rounded figure released in your standard news articles before actual figures come out. In Japan, you get "preliminary " figures on Monday (rounded, inconsistently, sometimes high or low, of the actual) that you see all over the news, followed by the real actuals on Tuesday that only specific sites share and don't really make the news.

For example, Jujutsu Kaisen's prelim total is out right now for example, at ¥11.62 billion, which is being reported all over, but it'll be something between ¥11.615-11.624 billion tomorrow. You won't see the actual, whatever it may be in that range, really reported on any news sites besides very specific sites and trade papers and such the next day.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (02/19-20)
Weekend Ranking (02/19-20):

01 (01) Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho) Week 9
02 (---) The Cherry Bushido (Nikkatsu) NEW
03 (---) Uncharted (Sony) NEW
04 (---) Ushikubi Village (Toei) NEW
05 (02) West Side Story (Disney) Week 2
06 (03) The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero (Toho) Week 6
07 (04) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) Week 7
08 (---) The Blue Skies at Your Feet (Happinet Phantom Studio) NEW
09 (08) Drive My Car (Bitters End) Week 27
10 (05) Usogui (Warner Bros.) Week 2

>Jujutsu Kasien 0 achieves yet another weekend atop the box-office, its fifth-consecutive and seventh overall now. And it didn't just manage to hold on in the face of three new wide openers, it managed to stomp them with almost a 50% ninth-weekend increase thanks to the start of its final giveaway promotion. The film earned an additional ¥336 million ($2.9 million) on 213,000 admissions in its ninth-weekend, up 49% versus last weekend, to achieve the ninth biggest ninth weekend ever. After 59 days in release, its total is now up to an incredible ¥11,624,529,420 ($104.6 million) and 8,341,611 admissions. Expect a total between ¥12.5-13.0 billion (~$115 million) and 9-9.5 million admissions.

>The Cherry Bushido was the top debut of the weekend, debuting to ¥146 million ($1.3 million) on 117,000 admissions across 227 screens. Since Friday, it earned ¥193,081,010 ($1.7 million) and 154,504 admissions. Not bad, especially for a Nikkatsu release. ¥1 billion ($9 million) is unlikely, but it does have a fair chance at hitting the milestone with this start.

>Uncharted settled for third, earning ¥128 million ($1.1 million) on 86,000 admissions across 768 screens. And since Friday, its 3-day was ¥177,042,400 ($1.6 million) on 120,129 admissions. I'd call it a bomb. Pretty much the same issues that many Hollywood releases have had recently: A lack of general appeal. No known names didn't help, either. Mark Walberg, sure, but he's never been a draw in the market and was just a supporting character here anyway. The day-and-date release just added to its list of problems. Given its success in the U.S., it might have been possible to generate interest ahead of its release with a more traditional 2-3 month release delay. Probably aiming for ¥700/750 million ($6-7 million) or so.

>Ushikubi Village, the third film in the Horror Village series, debuted in fourth place, experiencing another drop-off in the series. It missed ¥100 million over the weekend frame. Since Friday, it earned ¥122,490,700 ($1.1 million) on 95,112 admissions.

>West Side Story didn't hold nearly as well as it needed to as its two week total is below ¥500 million ($4.3 million). It needs some major Oscar wins to recover, and if it doesn't get them, it'll probably miss ¥1 billion ($9 million).

>Spider-Man: No Way Home slips several spots due to the openers, but is about to reach the ¥4 billion mark soon. After 45 days, its total is up to ¥3,955,019,740 ($35.3 million) and 2,613,456 admissions. Expect a finish around ¥4.2 billion (~$37.5 million) and 2.75-2.80 million admissions.

>The Blue Skies at Your Feet debuted in 8th place, though no weekend numbers are available. Since Friday though, it earned ¥70,558,120 ($614,000) on 50,733 admissions across 157 screens.

>Drive My Car didn't perform as well as it was probably expected to by many. It's doing well over the weekdays, skewing older, but this weekend left something to be desired, especially since it expanded up to 240 screens. Its total after 185 days is up to ¥560,856,980 ($4.9 million) on 414,650 admissions. It'll probably slowly add to its total over time and hit ¥1 billion, but it's likely going to take at least a Best Foreign-Language Picture win, though really needs a Best Picture or Best Director win to generate any further interest it appears. NOTE: It has NOT been in the Top 10 for 27 Weeks. This is just its 2nd week in the Top 10.

I think some more context is necessary in interpreting these numbers. The film is three hours long, a length that is quite unusual in the Japanese market. Most films hover between the two-hour and two-and-a-half-hour marks. Doesn’t this length significantly reduce the number of screenings and thus the box office numbers? In addition, Hamaguchi is an auteur who is still relatively unknown in the Japanese mainstream. Koreeda only achieved box office interest and success much later in his career, after getting Masaharu Fukuyama to star in Like Father, Like Son. His first internationally critically-acclaimed film, Nobody Knows, certainly didn’t achieve the box office heights of Like Father, Like Son and Shoplifters.

You nailed it. I wasn't trying to suggest it wasn't doing well because of its reception or anything, just that the numbers haven't gotten up to where they would be under normal circumstances.

Since it's skewing older, evident from its weekday business, it has a very few showings that actually appeal to older audiences due to its long runtime. It may have 4 or 5 at the average theaters, but only 2 of the showings (the first at 8/9am and second at 12/1pm) are doing well since older-skewing films perform quite poorly after 3pm or so.

If it wins big at the Oscars though (Best Foreign-Language, minimum), it can likely expand beyond its current audience and reach other demographics.

Death on the Nile opening this weekend and as a Kenneth Branagh fan I hope it succeed in Japan. However I don't know why they change the Japanese voice for Hercules Poirot from Murder on the Orient Express. It's not like there are any scandal and the first movie made it clear that there'll be second movie so I kinda expect a long term commitment from Japanese voice actor. Another recurring character has the same voice actor.

I want it to do something decent if just for the box-office's (and Hollywood's) sake, but the Friday admissions leave a lot to be desired. It'll likely skew older, so the increase on Saturday will be pretty small. Murder on the Orient Express had Johnny Depp, which helped. Might have to settle for second place behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0's tenth weekend.

Also, guys! If you have the time to submit a ballot for the WOKJ Movie Awards, please consider doing so! Click the link below for the rules (eligibility and such). Deadline is Monday.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 remained atop the box-office in its tenth-weekend, fending off Death on the Nile which basically bombed (or greatly disappointed, if you want, as it's a bit borderline). Nile came in around 35% below Orient Express. Not too surprising given the Friday results and Hollywood's status in Japan these days.

I imagine JJK0 should trend to over 13b now, adding an extra 900M from here looks fairly easily doable. If it can hold up to 13.5b it'd leap over 3 titles at once and enter top15.

Taiwan Numbers : NT$80M /$2.85M (4-days /OW)

2nd Biggest Debut for a Japanese Film in Taiwan, overtaking Your Name, but behind Demon Slayer (NT$116M)

Yeah, ¥13 billion is looking good. Last week was helped by the Emperor's Birthday (national holiday) on Wednesday, so the weekly result was inflated a bit, but still strong regardless. ¥13.5 billion is probably a stretch, but we'll see. I imagine the March releases will begin to cut into its showings/seating heavily (especially Doraemon this weekend), but if one or two films disappoint, it can maintain a sufficient amount to get it to/through Spring Break at the end of the month.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (02/26-27)
Weekend Ranking (02/26-27):

01 (01) Jujutsu Kaisen 0 (Toho) Week 10
02 (02) The Cherry Bushido (Nikkatsu) Week 2
03 (---) Death on the Nile (Disney) NEW
04 (04) Ushikubi Village (Toei) Week 2
05 (06) The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero (Toho) Week 7
06 (03) Uncharted (Sony) Week 2
07 (05) West Side Story (Disney) Week 3
08 (07) Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) Week 8
09 (---) King Richard (Warner Bros.) NEW
10 (09) Drive My Car (Bitters End) Week 28

>Jujutsu Kaisen 0 repeats atop the box office for a sixth-consecutive weekend, and eighth weekend overall. The film earned an additional ¥184 million ($1.6 million) on 121,000 admissions, bringing its 10-week total up to a staggering ¥12,114,827,660 ($108.9 million) and 8,669,486 admissions. As mentioned above, it's likely aiming to reach ¥13 billion (~$117 million) and over 9.3 million admissions. It might climb a little higher, but we'll need to see how it plays out.

>Death on the Nile pretty much bombed, earing just ¥124 million ($1.1 million) on 89,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 640 screens. And since Friday, it earned ¥164,754,430 ($1.4 million) on 119,918 admissions. This is down about 45% versus Murder on the Orient Express. Expect a finish around ¥700/¥750 million ($6-7 million) or so.

>The Confidence Man JP: Episode of Hero is having some good late legs, and is now up to ¥2,558,493,560 ($22.3 million) on 1,588,676 admissions after seven weeks. It's still down a good bit from its predecessor, but not a bad result.

>West Side Story is up to ¥694,171,260 ($6.0 million) and 488,475 admissions after three-weeks in release. If it doesn't win some major Oscars, it's currently on track to miss the ¥1 billion milestone.

>Spider-Man: No Way Home becomes only the second MCU film to break the ¥4 billion milestone, having earned ¥4,054,067,820 ($36.1 million) on 2,648,434 admissions after eight weeks in release. Not as high as some expectations were, but still a strong showing. Expect a finish around ¥4.2 billion (~$37.5 million) and ~2.75 million admissions.

>King Richard grossed ¥78,809,560 ($683,000) on 61,497 admissions over its five-day opening week.

>Drive My Car is up to ¥654,310,090 ($5.7 million) on 487,829 admissions after 192 days.

I imagine JJK0 should trend to over 13b now, adding an extra 900M from here looks fairly easily doable. If it can hold up to 13.5b it'd leap over 3 titles at once and enter top15.

It is a stretch, though its holds lately have been pretty excellent, so who knows. Yesterday was only down 14% from two weeks ago. I wouldn't put it as a target, more like just a cool end point feat if it does achieve it, I guess?
