My mum went to see the film because of him too. She thinks he's just darling. Just couldn't tell father, who also went! :)
Orlando is a good lad with a great heart when I knew him while he was here in NZ. He deserves every success that comes hisw way. Give him time and he will find his niche.

Bad trailer. Looks very boring and uninteresting. In terms of box office, I see it doing just a little more than King Arthur, because of it's good release date and Orlando Bloom, which should bring in some females.

I'll see this, no doubt. Though I have a deep hatred for Orlando Bloom, I'm a sucker for epic movies and also Ridley Scott. Box office wise, I don't think it'll make over $100 million. I see a little more than King Arthur numbers.

Opening: $22.5 million
Total: $60.8 million

Ouch. If only I had kept that prediction...

"KINGDOM'' Rules the World

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2005--KINGDOM's reign has begun! Ridley Scott's sweeping epic KINGDOM OF HEAVEN has already proven to be box office royalty as it commences its day-and-date release around the globe. The Orlando Bloom-starrer began its charge through nearly 100 planned markets with remarkable strength and has been coronated #1 in most markets.

Europe

KINGDOM was HEAVEN-sent in Germany, where the film debuted at $2.1 million (estimated, includes Wednesday previews), marking the best opening of the year so far in that territory. Germany's Thursday opening was just above "Troy" and 95% more than "Gladiator's" debut. In Belgium, KINGDOM was supreme; Thursday's box office of $281K was 174% of "Troy's" Thursday opening. The Dutch also embraced KINGDOM; their Thursday opening of $274K ranked as the best opening of the year, and was 120% of "Troy's" gross in the equivalent timeframe. Switzerland's openings in the French and German sectors have grossed $463K before the weekend begins, with Thursday's figures outperforming "Troy's" bow by 197%. Russia reaped a royal $404K on opening Thursday, to become the fourth best Fox opening day after only "The Day After Tomorrow," "Die Another Day," and "I, Robot," and just shy of the opening of the highest grossing film in Russia -- "Turkish Gambit."

Asia/Pacific

Moviegoers in the Asia/Pacific region also welcomed the arrival of KINGDOM: Korea's #1 opening collected an outstanding $1.2 million through Thursday. Singapore's excellent opening day gross of $113K was 100% of "Troy's" bow and 206% of "Gladiator's" opening. In Malaysia, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN earned a glowing $52K, representing 100% of "Troy's" debut and 203% of that of "Gladiator." Thailand's outstanding opening day of $204K outperformed the openings for both "Troy" and "Gladiator."

Latin America

HEAVEN shined in Latin America as well: Mexico's Thursday Opening of $530K was 40% higher than "Gladiator," which opened on a Friday. Puerto Rico's excellent opening at $49K was 108% of "Troy" and 270% of "Gladiator."

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN will continue its triumphant crusade throughout the world this weekend, and will bow next week in Japan.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN is a monumental epic about tolerance and honor, starring Orlando Bloom and set during the turbulent, emotionally charged and world-shaping Crusades. From master filmmaker Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), it traces the story of a common man of extraordinary conscience who rises to knighthood and embarks on a life-changing journey to find peace and a better world.

Twentieth Century Fox International is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a News Corporation Company.
...

I'm in Egypt, from the crowd I saw at theater.. this movie WILL break Passion's record for best opening of all time..

I'd expect it to do well overseas if it opens in 100 freakin markets.

Great opening day figures, even better than Troy's, which itself made a killing internationally! Screw the USA! ;)

What has the number of markets to do with its performance in the respective regions? :???:

From BOM:

Quote:
The official start of the summer movie season was anything but epic, with overall business for the first weekend of May the lowest since 1999 at an estimated $77 million for the top 12 pictures. The box office slump continues, and Hollywood is praying that Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith revitalizes people's interest in moviegoing when it opens May 19.

Kingdom of Heaven, director Ridley Scott's $130 million plus tale about the Crusades, captured an estimated $20 million at 3,216 locations—the weakest major No. 1 summer kickoff since 1991's Backdraft in terms of tickets sold. According to distributor 20th Century Fox's exit polling, the audience was 66 percent over the age of 25 and 52 percent male.

"I'm delighted with its performance," 20th Century Fox head of distribution Bruce Snyder told Box Office Mojo. "We had it pegged at about $17 million going into the weekend. The market is still a little bit soft. But the picture performed extremely well with audiences, and I think it will be around for a long time."

The Medieval era has been an unappealing subject to audiences in recent decades. At $165.5 million, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is the only picture of its ilk to top $100 million domestically, while Braveheart is a distant second at $75.6 million. Aside from those two pictures, the results usually range from disappointment to failure, including A Knight's Tale, First Knight and The 13th Warrior. Not even Midas touch producer Jerry Bruckheimer could resurrect the genre with last summer's King Arthur. The setting also hasn't translated to comedy (Black Knight) nor science fiction (Timeline).

Mr. Scott revived the sword-and-sandal epic after a near 40-year drought with Gladiator in 2000. It opened to $34.8 million at 2,938 venues on its way to $187.7 million, capitalizing on a concise marketing campaign about an underdog and his revenge. Kingdom of Heaven's ad campaign lacked clarity, and it failed to stress the importance of the Crusades and its relevance—many people are unfamiliar with that time of history—whereas ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and recent events carry more recognition.

Lead actor Orlando Bloom, in his first top-billed role after appearing in such costumed epics as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Pirates of the Caribbean and Troy, may be short on the dramatic heft needed to attract audiences to what was a tough sell to begin with, as was the case with Colin Farrell in Alexander. His part as Paris in Troy was unflattering, and—fairly or not—he has been branded as more heartthrob than the next Russell Crowe.

Historical war epics rooted in world history typically make three quarters of their worldwide gross outside of the United States and Canada—that was the case for such titles as Troy, The Last Samurai, King Arthur and Alexander. To that end, Kingdom of Heaven amassed an estimated $56 million overseas in around 100 territories—everywhere except Japan and China—ranking No. 1 in virtually all markets in its simultaneous international roll-out.

With an estimated $56m overseas it almost tripled its domestic opening take. How is this compared to Troy?

What's also interesting is Fox claiming that they were expecting only around $17m and thus are now delighted with the result. I'm doubting the validity of that claim...

Troy made $54.7 million in 47 markets in its opening weekend.

The key to Troy's success overseas, however, were also the good legs it had mostly everywhere. I don't see this type of legs for Kingdom of Heaven. Should top out at around $220-250 million internationally. Still great considering the domestic performance.

Any major markets not amongst these 47 (besides Japan)?

Anyway, i don't see it doing Troy numbers internationally either, still becoming one of the highest grossing movies of its type in recent years (with only Troy, The Last Samurai and Gladiator having grossed more) is nothing to sneeze at. Epics just aren't everyone's cup of tea...

What has the number of markets to do with its performance in the respective regions? :???:

Exactly. It's not like it only made 20M total in those 100 markets and barely edged out for No. 1 this week. It made 57M freaking dollars and was No. 1 in almost all the markets that it opened. That's pretty impressive.

No, I think it had pretty much the same opening pattern as Kingdom of Heaven.

The international gross is encouraging, yet overall the box-office turn-out is disappointing.

I wonder if SW: ROTS can have a $100+ million international weekend when it comes out...

'Kingdom' reaps $56 million

By DAVE MCNARY
http://www.variety.com/article/VR111792 ... id=13&cs=1

Fox's "Kingdom of Heaven" conquered the world's offshore markets in an impressive launch: Its estimated $56 million at 6,500 playdates in 100 territories during the Friday-Sunday frame was nearly triple the domestic opening.
The results underline the ever-increasing importance of foreign markets, particularly for big-budget tentpoles, and the strategy of day-and-date openings worldwide. Japan and China were the only major markets where Ridley ScottRidley Scott's Crusades epic didn't launch.

The international opening for "Kingdom" mirrors a pair of May 2004 launches -- UIP's "Van Helsing," with $53 million at 5,245 playdates during the same frame last year, and Warner's "Troy," with $54.8 million at 6,722 sites a week later.

In key European markets, "Kingdom" benefited from cooler weather following the warmer temps during the previous frame, when "XXX: State of the Union" posted relatively moderate numbers in its launch. "Kingdom" delivered its top number in Germany with $7.1 million at 842 engagements, including previews, to finish 20% behind "Troy."

Spain saw solid bizbiz with $5.2 million at 435 playdates, $1.1 million behind "Troy" but about equal to Scott's "Gladiator."

U.K. biz for "Kingdom" generated a beefy $4.8 million at 443 engagements, double the takings for "Alexander" and "Braveheart." France checked in with an estimated $4.5 million, 13% short of "Troy," while South Korea grossed $4 million at 333 screens and Italy grossed $3.9 million. (Fox Intl. is not handling distribution of the epic in France and Italy.)

"Kingdom" saw three other territories above $2 million -- Mexico with $2.8 million at 540, Russia with $2.2 million at 363 and Australia with $2 million at 361. Belgium, Brazil, Greece, Holland, Switzerland and Taiwan all topped $1 million.

Very strong openings by KOH in all markets, i was kinda dissapointed though with the UK and Australian takings, it's not up to par with everywhere else. There are a few standouts in the smaller markets such as Belgium and Switzerland where KOH's opening day is not too far off the likes of Matrix:Reloaded and TTT.

Star Wars looks primed for a $100m opening Weekend IMO, AOTC did a huge $70m. Like KOH it will debut everywhere (only Japan gets delayed to July). If we factor in the exchange rate, that $70m would equate to around $90m today and of course, considering the current marketplace. It will surely be the 4th movie to get $100m after Revolutions, ROTK and HP3.

The current record for overall Worldwide Opening weekend is held by ROTK at $250.9m......something which ROTS has a shot at for sure.

I think KoH has a good shot at $300m worldwide, which will cover most if not all production and marketing costs and make the DVD pure profit. No slouch.

If women want to salivate over a younger man, then the all power to them. I don't see anybody raving how "sadly true" and  it is that older men have been lusting after younger women (some not even of age) for the past 4000 years. [-(

The historical epic genre is dead. They past 3 have done bad (Kingdom of Heaven, Alexander, King Arthur) and 1 has underperformed (Troy). The genre should remained closed until 2010 or so and then re-opened, but only release 1 per year not 3 or more (like 2004).

No TTT disaster for you this time. ;) Good call...

As for it doing Braveheart numbers, in NA no since that had great (Oscar) legs, worldwide easily.

Really? You guys think it will do more than 200 mill WW? I'm not so sure about that. And as for reaching 75 mill, I don't think it has any shot of that. So it will be worse that Braveheart.
