Jujutsu Kaisen 0 - Daily Tracker

12/24 (Fri.): ¥1,072,252,950 ($9.39 million) / 772,224
12/25 (Sat.): ¥892,008,700 ($7.81 million) / 626,110
12/26 (Sun.): ¥729,866,500 ($6.39 million) / 509,719
12/27 (Mon.): ¥385,000,000 ($3.34 million) / 280,000 *est.*
12/28 (Tues.): ¥400,000,000 ($3.50 million) / 280,000 *est.*
12/29 (Wed.): ¥570,000,000 ($4.96 million) / 445,000 *est.*
12/30 (Thur.): ¥515,000,000 ($4.47 million) / 360,000 *est.*
12/31 (Fri.): ¥305,000,000 ($2.65 million) / 215,000 *est.*

8-Day Total: ~¥4,869,128,150 ($42.51 million) / 3,488,053 *est.*

Better New Year's Eve. than I was expecting. Not way better, but I was expecting closer to a 50% drop, not 40%. So it ended Mon-Fri. with ~¥2.175 billion ($18.92 million), which is 34% higher than its opening weekend. Very good, great. Helped by the holidays, of course, but a very frontloaded film still isn't likely to outdo its opening weekend over its first set of weekdays, so this is encouraging for the future.

We enter a 3-day Holiday Weekend now, with Saturday (New Year/Bank Holiday/Discount Day), Sunday (Bank Holiday), and Monday (Bank Holiday). So let's see what the next three days hold! I'm expecting business will be spread out pretty well, and don't think one single day over the weekend will be particularly higher than the others.

Just note: Weekend dallies (Sat/Sun) aren't as strong relative to the weekdays during a holiday period. Not saying they'll be weak, but they won't double or triple up or anything like that. Weekdays are generally very strong in Japan to begin with, one of the reasons the market has much stronger legs than the majority of markets, and holiday periods amplifies this. The difference between weekday and weekend is very blurred as they act similarly.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: A New Year Begins (2022)

A New Year Begins - 2022

Happy New Year! A day early (for some) versus being a day late last year, so the universe is back in balance.

To begin: A huge THANK YOU to everyone who continues to visit this thread. Be it with daily/weekly discussions, or just to all the lurkers who visit for news and updates, I appreciate all of the activity. Many of you joined last fall during Demon Slayer's record-breaking run, and most of you have stuck around! I won't lie and say I'm surprised because I was expecting a good chunk of the new members to more or less leave and/or become lurkers again. So, thanks to everyone that has continued to stick around!

And remaining lurkers, readers... you really should join this year! Check this out: Most users ever online was 1333 on Sun Dec 26, 2021 7:40 pm. I have no proof, but this is probably from many of you coming here over Jujutsu Kaisen's opening weekend last week. I know we (this thread at least) were shared on Reddit and other social media platforms last year during Demon Slayer's run, and I definitely know some official news outlets used the data I posted here for their articles (that's fine, just consider referencing us next time?) exposing us to many new visitors, so I suspect something similar happened again last weekend. So please considering joining.

Okay, so now onto a *slightly* somber note: 2021 was the "roughest" year I had continuing this thread. I didn't quite reach a burnout, but I was quickly approaching one. I knew I needed some time away (not *just* this forum/thread, other things too), and the 2-month break (from the internet entirely--I didn't even have my phone on me for a full week) I took back in the summer was far more needed than I realized at the time. So I'll probably take at least one prolonged break like this year for however many more years I'm here.

That said, I do still very much enjoy doing this and wouldn't if I didn't, so that remains unchanged for the time being. I have *slightly* scaled back on updates (such as no longer posting Weekend Forecasts and seldom Weekend Estimates), and that's helped find a nice balance between "too much" and "too little." I expect my current routine to more or less remain through 2022, at least for the first part of the year. I'll be handling this on more of a daily/weekly basis though, and adjust from there.

Now, back to more positive news!

Since January 1st last year, the thread saw 125 new pages consisting of 3,087 new posts! This was the second busiest year for the thread, only behind 2020 of course. However, this year wasn't really *that* much slower, which is surprising given the crazy traffic the thread was having last Fall/Winter.

And... 2021 actually did BEAT 2020 in one statistic and that was VIEWS. This thread recorded an astounding 1,032,000 views over the past 12 months! That's the most views yet, even topping 2020's prior record of 898,000 with relative ease! We just broke 3.9 million views today. I don't want to make any predictions or set expectations (besides, I'm probably the *ONLY* person who watches such things), but perhaps we can break 1 million views again in 2022 and hit 5 million overall?

Lastly, I've been asked to update the first post of the thread by a few people and I definitely will. I' going to wait, however, until the 2021 Yearly Box Office Data is released at the end of January to do it so that it's 100% accurate and requires no edits afterwards. In the meantime, here is a look back at ALL the years for the thread, including the Top 10 Films of every year.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: A New Year Begins! (2022)
Okay, before the discussion gets too out of hand today (regarding JJK0), I went back and looked at New Year's Day across many years and... it's not a very big day. In fact, it's one of the weaker days of the season (though the day it lands on matters a bit). I also have this weird habit of always preparing New Year's Day as a big day (for the box-office) almost every year. The days before and after New Year's Eve/New Year's Day are almost always bigger. (Seriously, my posts leading up to New Year's Day almost every year are pretty similar.)

So... my bad. :P It's literally the only holiday I seem to do this with. I guess I just get too hung up on "1st of a month (discount day) + holiday period = $$$", but it's the ONE holiday that this isn't the case for. (If I do it again next year, please remind me!)

Happy new years! (:

Is it? I checked the biggest film on those 3 days for the past few years and got this:

Rogue One (2017, sun): 104,551 > 88,679 > 84,645
The last Jedy (2018, mon): 166,535 > 126,156 > 135,405
Bohemian Rapsody (2019, tue): 105,977 > 109,603 > 102,584
The Rise of Skywalker (2020, wed): 174,366 > 145,822 >161,786
Demon Slayer (2021, fri): 145,298 > 141,093 > 131,524

Didn't go much further, but in the last 5 years the 1st was always the biggest minus the one instance with bohemian rapsody where the 2nd was bigger (I assume because it was a wednesday?). Though maybe you meant in terms of gross and that came in lowest for all (or almost all) of them due to heavy discount on the 1st.

Weekend looks like it'll be a pretty sizable drop, so 6b on monday perhaps?

Yeah, I went back and checked the New Year Week Estimates (revenue) that I did here over the past several years. It tends to be stronger when it falls on a weekday (Mon.-Fri.), which makes sense.

We'll see how the evening/night showings perform later.

It's just how the 1st landed on a Saturday this year. Most everything is down quite a bit versus last Saturday. JJK0 is down more, but it had a much higher place to fall down from. I've also seen mentioned that there is a lot more for people to do this year versus last year. Japan has never been on a lockdown, but there were capacity limits and other restrictions in place for larger entertainment venues last year, so there's a lot more to do this year.

Sunday looks better in terms of reservations already, and is a generally stronger walk-up day, so tomorrow will fare better. And I expect the first few days into next week, especially Monday, to be pretty similar.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 - Daily Tracker

12/24 (Fri.): ¥1,072,252,950 ($9.39 million) / 772,224
12/25 (Sat.): ¥892,008,700 ($7.81 million) / 626,110
12/26 (Sun.): ¥729,866,500 ($6.39 million) / 509,719
12/27 (Mon.): ¥385,000,000 ($3.34 million) / 280,000 *est.*
12/28 (Tues.): ¥400,000,000 ($3.50 million) / 280,000 *est.*
12/29 (Wed.): ¥570,000,000 ($4.96 million) / 445,000 *est.*
12/30 (Thur.): ¥515,000,000 ($4.47 million) / 360,000 *est.*
12/31 (Fri.): ¥305,000,000 ($2.65 million) / 215,000 *est.*
01/01 (Sat.): ¥280,000,000 ($2.43 million) / 215,000 *est.*

9-Day Total: ~¥5,149,128,150 ($44.94 million) / 3,703,053 *est.*

Not a very good Saturday, but taking into account that New Year's Day fell on a Saturday (most everything else fell pretty hard), which perhaps explains the strength that Wednesday and Thursday displayed (biggest Thursday ever on record, remember), not much to worry about since many of the next several days will be around the same.

Besides, the big story of the day is... that it exceeded the ¥5 billion milestone on its 9th day, the second fastest any film has reached the mark, and just the second to do it in single-digits too.

Back-to-back years having a film do it under 10 days. Before Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, it seemed nearly impossible to break into the Top 5 with all those films being released between 2001-2004, but 17 years later, we have a new Top 2.

Apparently Kouhaku, the big year end music program, had considerable decline in ratings, do you think the JJK release effected it.

That doesn't make any sense, Kouhaku Uta Gassen airs on new year's eve between 19:45 and 23:45, JJK only sold 10-11k tickets nationwide in that timeframe whereas that decline is in the order of million of viewers.

Ooh ok, did anything else significant happened in that time frame for that heavy decline to have happened or is it just a factor of tv dying and this year being relatively more free due to less covid restrictions.

I would contribute it to the general public being out and about, be it spending time with family and/or enjoying a wide variety of entertainment. There are little/no restrictions related to capacity or operation hours this New Year. Japan has never had any lockdowns, but this New Year is the first major holiday period since the pandemic with little/no restrictions. Obon Festival, Golden Week, and Spring Break were impacted in some way in 2021, as well as in 2020.

So this New Year is unique. I think it's also why the box office this weekend has been largely subdued too. (Not just for JJK0, but pretty much every film.) If we see unusually high numbers at the box office and elsewhere (like TV ratings) heading out of and post the holiday season, that may confirm this suspicion.

Can't say I know enough about the program or even jp tv in general to speculate on why its ratings might be down honestly.

I feel like I'm coming back to evangelion as a close comparison of sorts. Aligned on their 2nd weekend eva had 4.9B on a 680M (-42%) weekend, whereas JJK will be 5.4b on a ~615M (-62%) weekend.

It's not a perfect comparison, mainly because evangelion debuted on a monday which makes this more days for it, though I think the amount of holidays JJK has had balances it out. JJK still has an advantage here considering it hasn't had a 4d expansion yet, but evangelion also was supported tremendously throughout its run with a ton of giveaways and even a re-release with new scenes which really gave it new life when I was sure it was going to miss that mark. Eva grossed 1.1b the following week, while JJK will definitely gross more than that while still having holiday support, but eva will have spring break boosting it after JJK's holiday support runs out.

I think JJK will probably finish 10-11b. It shouldn't miss that mark unless toho for some reason decides they don't care about giving it any sort of expansion/giveaway support, but I'm not sure it has enough fuel left to get much further than that.

It's a "bad" second weekend drop, but its weekdays leading up to the weekend (which included a new record Thursday) were very strong (~34% higher than its OW). And in general, weekdays are far greater than weekends during holiday periods in the market. (Weekdays are almost on par with weekends even outside of holiday periods, excluding young-skewing films.)

If the next several days are similar to what it's earned over the past 3, which I'm currently expecting, then it'll be in fine shape. Its Monday presales look roughly on par with Sunday from what I'm seeing. The next set of weekdays could more than double its second weekend.
