1. I didn't remember Labor Day... 2. 30-35% drops for the rest of it's run after this weekend...

What went right for TDK? Obviously, several things.
-Batman Begins. In the end, this is the reason why the film is a big hit. Batman Begins reesstablish Batmans name that he was ready to be back in the uber-level. Fact is, even with everything else going on, if BB wasn't as good as it was, the film doesn't break 300m. Hell, the film probably wouldn't have even been made if WOM wasn't so good.
-Joker. Greatest comic-book villain of all time coming back. Nuff said.
-Ledger's death. I hate to say something like this, but its true. Ledger's death added to the film. The media frenzy wouldn't have been as strong as it was if he didn't sadly pass away.
-Release date. TDK opened right at the peak of the comic-book boom. Interest in comic-book movies is the highest ever. Not to mention, it was the last event film of the summer, and basically the entire summer was building up to TDK opening. As that little kid said to Downey about Iron Man: "It'll do....till TDK comes out."
-WB marketing. WB marketing was fucking fantastic. The viral marketing was brilliant, the trailers were well put, and they were aggressive in their TV spots and their promo campaigns. TDK has been everywhere latley.
-Reviews. Reviews usually aren't a factor, but when they are this good for a summer blockbuster (that isn't Pixar cause people expect that anyways), it is. BB went right, but its all Ledgers death man. It7 got the film enormous explosure really earluy, and thats whe neverybody learned how good we he was supposed to be. Than Indy came and sisappointedand all the buzz just flocked to TDK. And obv BB and some good marketing, but yeah its all Ledger.

Nah dude, too many peopel who never saw BB wantesd to see this; it all falls on Ledger. Hes the difference between the opening weekend being 105 million and 158; he's the difference (ultimately) of a 300 million finish and a 400+ finish. It all falls him.
His death sparked the word that the film was fantastic, his film got the film insane ealry awareness, his film made it the media event of the summer, his film makes everyign fal back to hinm; all the public buzz. Its all on his detah.

So, so many people I know that saw TDK this weekend haven't even seen Batman Begins. Heath Ledger's performance and the terrific word-of-mouth has sparked so much interest in it, beyond what your usual WOM increase would look like. It became a must-see film for anyone.

BOM's poll still has 62% of people saying The Dark Knight is their first choice next weekend, with over 2200 polled...

Re: The Dark knight- DAY 3: $158,411,483
I think a lot of it has to to with the teaser and first images that were released on Heath as the Joker, those lines in the trailer, "Tonight people are going to die, I'm a man of my word." Really got the intrest going, Also I believe that if Heath Ledger did not have the performance he did, which was a 10 dollar clinic on acting, then the buzz wouldn't be so great. But people have been saying, its Heath Ledger's last movie and he's amazing in it. If the quality wasn't there it just would have been, it's Heath Ledger's last movie.

Re: The Dark knight- DAY 3: $158,411,483
Interesting new poll up at BOM:
What's the top reason for 'The Dark Knight's success? 37.5% Heath Ledger's performance. 20.5% Director Christopher Nolan's vision. 14.8% Media hype, including reviews. 5.7% The Joker. 5.7% A real movie event amidst a bad economy and high gas prices. 4.5% The word-of-mouth from 'Batman Begins.' 3.4% The Batman brand. 3.4% The marketing campaign. 2.3% The ensemble cast. 1.1% Other 1.1% The stunts and special effects. 0.0% Timing and scope of the release. 88 users polled.
I actually voted for Nolan's vision, thinking it would be lower. It'll probably drop as more weigh in though. However, I definitely agree with #1.

Re: The Dark knight- DAY 3: $158,411,483
I'd actually say it's the combination of "The word-of-mouth from 'Batman Begins.'" and "The Batman brand." as the direct contributions. Heath's performance and his tragic death added some to the equation, but not really the top reason. It could be the No. 1 reason for the film being as good as it is though, so I guess it depends on if we're talking about box office or quality of the film itself.

I think it's The Joker. Heath's perfomane enhances that reason, but it's not #1.

A possible record (even though it may be unlikely, however TDK has done the unthinkable)
First $100M 2nd weekend!
That is only a 36.87% drop!

That is only a 36.87% drop! Titanic would fall in less than 40 days if it did that.

TDK is already leaving its mark on the release schedule... THE PERFECT GAME is no longer opening August 8th and FLY ME TO THE MOON is delayed by one week to August 15th...
