Corpse wrote: I'm surprised by any doubts regarding what Demon Slayer can do this weekend and upcoming holiday week. It's been performing above and beyond for over 160 days now, setting many records that will almost certainly never be broken along the way. Even its weekly numbers over the past few weeks have been higher than any other film on record at this stage of release.
Its weekdays have been equal to, or sometimes higher than, its weekends for months now. What do you think those weekdays are going to be like next week during a holiday period with an ongoing giveaway event and Dolby Cinema expansion with 4x as many seats and 3x as many showings as it's had versus the last several weeks/month(s)?
Whatever it does this weekend, and it's going to be a lot (perhaps jumping several hundred percent to probably 3-4x the 24th weekend record and having its best weekend in possibly 10(!) weeks), the weekdays are very likely to eclipse it.
At the very least wait and see what happens before having doubts. Yes it's true you're right but it's just that selling 2 million tickets for a film during its 24th and 25th week of exploitation seems so difficult but it is sure that if there is a film that can do that it's Demon Slayer. And like you said the weekend is going to be big but the days of next week are going to be even bigger. I can't wait for the film to go over ¥40Bn and hit 30 million admissions.

I dunno if this was posted here already or everyone already knows, but it seems that KnY is now the highest-grossing film in Malaysia in 12 days. Jesus Christ. Seems like nothing is impossible for KnY anymore lmao https://www.thestar.com.my/lifestyle/en ... anime-film

They're moving fast! Not actually a teaser trailer or anything, so it doesn't look like anything significant is animated yet, but sheesh. They're moving right on along and I wouldn't be shocked if they manage to get it out this Winter perhaps. I'd make ¥5 billion the initial goal as that's about as high as any Weekly Shonen Jump title goes. Demon Slayer is the first one to ever gross more than ¥9 billion, so setting the goal at ¥10 billion (or higher) is definitely the high-end until we get a proper feel of how large its fanbase currently is (which we can't do since the manga has been on constant stock issues for 6 months), and if said fanbase manages to grow now that season one of the anime has concluded. Now, it's probably going to do ¥5 billion and then some based on what we know right now, but don't really want to expect a total of twice that yet. Demon Slayer wasn't really expected to do ¥10 billion (most high expectations were Detective Conan levels) until its release date was approaching and pre-sales for it made it very evident something the box office had never seen before was about to open.

The sixth giveaway doesn't have a deadline like this weekend's, so it doesn't need to sell 2 million tickets in 2 weeks. But do remember that it's not really seeking out 2 million to come out again. It only needs about 1 million fans (actually less overall when accounting for scalpers and just casual moviegoers who may not have seen it yet) to come out two more times.

I see some hyped comment on twitter mostly from western fan said it would beat Spirit Away..... A decent portion of social media is bitter that Demon Slayer has become so popular and has beaten everything, many thinking it's over-hyped and what have you. Ignore them. They're going to think anything in the future with any sort of popularity, especially if they think it's better than Demon Slayer, is likely to have a repeat of Demon Slayer's box office because if an over-hyped series (to them) can do it, then anything can right? No. That's not going to happen. 80-year-olds aren't reading their manga, and school children aren't selecting characters from the anime as bigger role models to them than their own parents like Demon Slayer has experienced. The Jujutsu Kaisen movie is in a great position to do incredibly well, and I wouldn't be too surprised if it did gross over ¥10 billion, but expecting that right now is doing so without having a lot of information. Namely, how will its manga sales behave now that season one of the anime concluded? If they begin to subside, we can probably rule out much of its upper-potential. If they continue to remain strong, then it's clearly in good shape moving forward. Or can they increase further? We don't know a lot about its future at the moment.

I just noticed that the manga sales of Demon Slayer didn't jump dramatically during the anime airing time, but it only started to jump dramatically after the anime ended 2 month and just continued to go on and on.........

Yes, and it really started to capture the attention of people after episode 19 aired.
I'll have Demon Slayer's dailies for this week posted in a bit. Was a bit busy in the middle of the week so just decided to hold off to do them all at once before the weekend begins. I'll also check it, and others', Saturday reservations later too.

However, last Saturday and Sunday were a little weird. Fewer locations were accounted for on the individual days versus the weekend report (since an earthquake closed a few locations on Saturday), so it's hard to really say how much each day grossed. I just split the weekend gross evenly. Sunday was likely a bit bigger, since it normally is, but I don't want to throw out a random number here.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (03/20-21); Charts Update
Pretty stupid guy. He probably was "only" recording scenes he wanted to watch himself later on as he explained, but Japan has very strict copyright laws and even harsher punishments (up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $100,000 as mentioned in the article). This is one of the reasons why piracy is largely non-existent in the market. The law and the copyright holders (especially them) do not mess around with this and go the extra-mile in dealing with it.
This is the only reported case of this after 24 weeks, so that should tell you something.

And to think the digital release is coming soon. I know the DVD is pretty pricey but compared to the punishment, it's not worth it. Hope he learns his lesson though

Hey corpse, considering the release window for the JJK movie seems to be set for winter, which month would be most fit for a blockbuster (or uber-blockbuster) potential movie?

JustLurking wrote: Hey corpse, considering the release window for the JJK movie seems to be set for winter, which month would be most fit for a blockbuster (or uber-blockbuster) potential movie? December. Late-November could also work if it's not skewing heavily towards a younger audience, which I don't believe it is or will be (as it's still pretty new and growing, its demographics can change). November can be a trap of sorts for studios though if their film(s) appeals too heavily towards families or children, since weekdays will be very low for them for 4-6 weeks (which can lead to early seating/showtime cuts) until the end of December. If such a film is released in November and isn't a WOM hit with audiences, they often flounder and end up reaching the holidays with little momentum to do too much. However, if the schedule is still largely devoid of Hollywood releases come next Fall, it really opens up more possibilities for a potentially earlier release due to lack of competition if they'd have it ready. Really don't want to keep making Demon Slayer comparisons as it's leading to unrealistic expectations and comparisons, but Demon Slayer did what it did from opening in the weakest month of the year and went over 2 months in release before even hitting a holiday period. It's the most extreme case of opening out of season and finding success, but out of season debuts can work well under certain circumstances. All of this has happened so fast. Really wasn't expecting MAPPA to have a movie ready within, possibly, 6-months of season one ending. Unless MAPPA is a lot larger than I realize (many of you would know more on this), I think this probably suggests that they're not working on a Part 2 to Attack on Titan's final season for awhile, and may even decide to conclude it with a theatrical release.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (03/27-28)
Weekend Forecast (03/27-28): 01 (01) ¥543,000,000 ($5.0 million), -20%, ¥6,050,000,000 ($55.6 million), Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time (Toho/Toei/Khara) WK3 02 (07) ¥330,000,000 ($3.0 million), +300%, ¥39,195,000,000 ($374.9 million), Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (Toho/Aniplex) WK24 03 (---) ¥225,000,000 ($2.1 million), 0, ¥325,000,000 ($3.0 million), Monster Hunter (Toho-Towa) NEW 04 (---) ¥140,000,000 ($1.3 million), 0, ¥200,000,000 ($1.8 million), Girls und Panzer the Finale - Part 3 (Showgate) NEW 05 (02) ¥121,000,000 ($1.1 million), -45%, ¥610,000,000 ($5.6 million), Caution, Hazardous Wife: The Movie (Toho) WK2 06 (---) ¥100,000,000 ($915,000), 0, ¥140,000,000 ($1.3 million), Kiba: The Fangs of Fiction (Shochiku) NEW 07 (03) ¥x94,000,000 ($860,000), -38%, ¥400,000,000 ($3.7 million), Tom & Jerry (Warner Bros.) WK2 08 (04) ¥x68,000,000 ($620,000), -41%, ¥230,000,000 ($2.1 million), Healin Good Pretty Cure: GoGo! Big Transformation! Town of Dreams (Toei) WK2 09 (06) ¥x64,000,000 ($585,000), -29%, ¥3,410,000,000 ($33.0 million), Loved Like a Flower Bouquet (Tokyo Theaters, Co./Little More) WK9 10 (05) ¥x59,000,000 ($540,000), -36%, ¥620,000,000 ($5.7 million), Brave: Gunjyo Senki (Toho) WK3
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time will threepeat atop the box office, and should deliver a great hold. It has a giveaway event starting today (although it's an illustration of the poster, so not too appealing), but perhaps more importantly, it has stage greetings on Sunday that were previously delayed due to restrictions in Tokyo when it opened. Those showings are largely sold out. Saturday is likely going to look a bit deceiving (possibly off 30-40%) since business will be more focused on Sunday than normal.
Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is heading for a massive increase, thanks to its fifth giveaway event beginning today, in addition to its Dolby Cinema expansion. It's also been given more premium format showings, and some bigger screens at many locations. It's difficult to really predict an increase given the circumstances, only that it's going to be several hundred percent based on the data currently available. Its average ticket price is also likely to see a bump from the additional premium format showings and expensive Dolby Cinema tickets, so the increase in revenue will be a bit higher than that in admissions. Also, if it wasn't pretty clear, this will break the Biggest 24th Weekend Record by a significant amount.
Monster Hunter looks like it may settle for a third place debut, but it seems on track to break ¥200 million, and if it does, I'd consider it a mild success given it could have outright bombed. As mentioned, Hollywood adaptations of domestic material is frequently ignored by audiences. If it does open around the forecast above, it should safely get above the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone and might (big might) be able to approach ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million) if Spring Break is kind to it. Japan will be its biggest international market, of course, and it could approach the U.S. tally (if Spring Break is kind).
Girls und Panzer the Finale - Part 3 did well on Friday, and has good Saturday pre-sales, so I'm just going with a similar debut as both of its predecessors. It's on a few less screens than the last film, and might be hindered a bit from fewer night showings since theaters in and around Tokyo are still largely closing early (8/9PM), so it might come in a little below them.
Nomadland also opens this weekend, but it might not crack the Top 10. It was borderline on Friday, coming in tenth place based on estimated admissions, and it'll probably be borderline over the weekend, too. So if it does make the Top 10, bumping Brave: Gunjyo Senki out, look for a debut around what Brave makes over the weekend.
And lastly, since this is a weekend before a holiday period (Spring Break), Sunday could be stronger than it usually is since evening showings are typically stronger than normal.

REALLY HUGE. Corpse, I don't know much about it. Spring break is a vacation period only for students, right ? And maybe it's too early but what are you waiting for about Demon Slayer weekdays next week ? Can we talk about an increase of several hundred % also for days of weeks ? And if his performances are huge, could he go back to number 1 for a few days ?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (03/26-27)
Spring Break mostly benefits films that skew younger or towards students, such as families and teens/young adults. Family films and romance films are the two biggest genres that really thrive. In Demon Slayer's case, it appeals to every demographic, so it'll be able to take advantage of the holiday period. If you remember Christmas Week, another period that largely benefits the same demographics, it was having the second best increases only behind Stand By Me, Doraemon 2.
Sometimes the films that benefit the most can earn up to 2-3x their weekend gross over the weekdays. In Demon Slayer's case, the giveaway could possibly skew more business towards this weekend than the weekdays, but it's been having very strong weekdays already and the giveaway isn't going to run out over the weekend like the earlier ones did. That could strengthen the weekdays since someone doesn't really need to rush out in the first couple of days to get one this time, and can be more selective on when they go during the break instead.
It's not likely to climb back to #1. Evangelion's too strong right now and will also benefit some (though not as much) over Spring Break.

Thank you Corpse for this information, and if Demon Slayer manages to sell the 1 million tickets that is how much in income on the days of the week (if the weekend reaches ¥ 330mn as you predict) ? around ¥1Bn ?

So there are still big demand for DS movie after 23 weeks.........
It is really not often that the company just freely makes 1m goods on the 24th weekend without worrying about it will end up losing money rather than gaining more money.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (03/26-27)
Can we make prediction for movie gross based on number of likes and shares on twitter? Currently, the post about the movie of the official twitter account of JJK got around 320k like and 200k shares https://twitter.com/animejujutsu/status ... 32992?s=20I don't have the number at similar time for Demon Slayer movie announcement on twitter, anyone got it?

Re: Japan Box-Office: Weekend Forecast (03/26-27)
I wouldn't think so. It has a lot of potential to be big. That's about all we know right now. Twitter is also accessible worldwide, so it's hard to gauge how many are out of Japan. Jujutsu Kaisen has been trending for awhile though, last I saw it was at 161,000. This announcement clearly shows interest is incredibly high.
And it's very clear it's the next big thing (or already is, really) based on its manga sales and anime reception, but predicting what the film could gross is just not really doable. There's nothing of precedent to really base it on. Everyone's going to be throwing around Demon Slayer comparisons, and that's fine on the manga front since you can compare sales at similar points in time, but there's nothing else to really measure them with right now.
They're also very, very different. Demon Slayer was able to attract senior citizens due to its setting, and families/children due to its younger main characters and the lead's strong relationship. I have a hard time seeing Jujutsu Kaisen appealing much to senior citizens or children. It can make that up by bringing other demographics out in stronger numbers (if possible), but this just further highlights how difficult it is to make comparisons.
