Her is what's going on at Moviefone...

1. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
2. Crash (2005)
3. Monster-in-Law
4. Kicking & Screaming (2005)
5. Unleashed

It's looking like Crash is definitely generating some good WOM, but that was expected. The other 2 releases last weekend seem to have fallen to the wayside, even though I don't really think this is very accurate. Let's face it, Crash WON'T be #1 this weekend.

He's been a little off lately, but he did call Kingdom of Heaven pretty good. (Way off on House of Wax, though.

That is true, but those movies had 50 million marketing campaigns and huge stars, not to mention much wider appeal then any of this weekend's openers (and even better reviews then all the openers except for Unleashed, which has been getting surprisingly strong ones).

If reviews mattered for comedies, the 38% that Meet the Fockers got wouldn't haven't translated into like 46M for the opening, let alone 280M for the total. Critics don't have good senses of humor, and I think moviegoers know this. I've always known not to pay any attention reviews where comedies are concerned, so I'll assume I'm not the only one. Too many critics don't realize that you can't watch a comedy as if you're watching a serious movie. They don't have the right perspective. This is my biggest problem with the likes of Roger Ebert, he dissects too much and sacrifices enjoyment. Just take a look at this review, and you'll see what I mean.

Well see, that 38% Meet the Fockers wasn't great, but the reviews seemed pretty mixed, with most of the rotten ones being about a C. Just look at the Cream of the Crop average (I think they have far more pull then a bunch of internet critics who may taint the scale), and Fockers scored the epitome of medicority, a 5.1, considerably better then the 3.9 which Monster-in-Law is getting. I think that there's a level where so-so reviews won't change the mind of audiences, particularly when it's an action or horror movie where the male/teenage audience doesn't care. But family films and ones with heavy older female appeal seem to much moreso, and that 17% that Monster-in-Law is batting isn't just somewhat bad, it's absolutely terrible. Personally, I put more weight in metacritic.com as they're only the major critics and newspapers, not just internet critics. http://www.metacritic.com/film/titles/monsterinlaw But just look at that, and it's pretty awful. Alien Vs. Predator aside, films get just too much negative talk to open at #1. http://www.metacritic.com/film/lowscores.shtml Of the all time 200 worst films (and Monster in Law is only 5 points out of 100 away from making it onto that list), I could only count Garfield, Patch Adams, The Skulls, Mr. Deeds, Christmas with The Kranks, Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat, and Kanagaroo Jack could be called hits (and a few of them are debatable at that). Note that all but Mr. Deeds and The Skulls are kids comedies, and beyond that name a huge bomb, and there's a terrific chance you'll find it on that list (Gigli, Alone in the Dark, King's Ransom, you name it and it's probably there). I just really am shifty about it's odds, as the reviews are almost too awful to really just skip over.

When was Mr Deeds a kid comedy?

It was a RomCom just like Monster In Law.

m-i-l has bad reviews, but they are just above the "horrible" level.
The horrible level is where nearly everything there is a superbomb.
Monster in law ranks just above that.

Damn you Xiayun and Samweis.

Derby:
Monster-in-Law- $14.3 million
Kicking & screaming- $12.0 million
Unleashed- $8.0 million
Mindhunters- $2.4 million

What I;m thinkinh right now:
Kicking & Screaming- $15.5 million
Monster in Law- $15.0 million
Unleashed- $7.3 million
Mindhunters- $2.6 million

Should be close for #1.

if either of the two movies in 3,400+ make less than $20m then i think that signifies a new low for blockbusters.
Seriously; no film should be that wide unless its damn well merited.

Maybe you should read my whole post before you reply, where I said (and I quote): "Note that all but Mr. Deeds and The Skulls are kids comedies".

And no offense, but I hardly see how debating about the proper adjective for terrible will change anything about Monster-in-Law's reviews. Just look at that link, those are pretty miserable man. I'd say that all the "excruciatingly bad" movies review wise are the superbombs, and they all are, whereas horrible isn't QUITE there, but tell me that doesn't sound like I'm drawing straws.
