Just checked Smithsonian IMAX... Air and Space IMAX sold out the 7:30 and the 10:30 for Friday. Natural History Museum IMAX sold out the 7:45 and 10:45 for Friday. Both midnights were gone on June 11.

I love it. DeVito gives a fantastic performance. Lots of memorable scenes with the Penguin, from the amazing prologue to the creepy bit where he bites one of his campaign employees.
Michelle Pfeiffer in top form as Catwoman. Keaton is compelling and low-key and spot-on in both of his outings. A beautiful vision of Gotham City. A super-sleazy, leering Walken performance. The melancholy last scene. The sexy Siouxsie and the Banshees song.
Perfect superhero movie, in my opinion

I've never read into this franchise's production history: is there any reason Burton didn't direct a third film? Was he not interested in doing so? Was the studio afraid his vision of the character and world would become even more foreboding and idiosyncratic?
Batman Returns adjusts to 310 million. A fairly epic run in its own right.

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of Tickets Now on S
Basically, WB felt that Returns should have made more and wanted the film series to be more mainstream. Not exactly an unfair opinion to have, IMO, because Returns weirdness certainly attributed to it coming well short of the '89 Batman's gross.
It only paid off for one film, of course.

BB and TDK also had some reminiscent themes and scenaries that made us thought about Batman 89 and Returns

It grossed a lot less than Batman despite opening higher, and there were complaints of it being "too dark." Schumacher's more kid-friendly movies show where the WB executives hearts were at for the franchise.

Batman Returns adjusts to 310 million. A fairly epic run in its own right. It dropped from 63 million tickets for B89 to 39 million tickets for BR. Legs were horrible by 1992 standards due to soccer moms complaining about the Penguin's black blood. McDonald's revoked its Happy Meal agreement with WB. The studio felt Burton crossed a line by going too dark and so they basically fired him.

There are no perfect movies, and certainly none in the superhero genre. There are no happy endings. The world indeed will end. One day, maybe soon.

I dont remember warner firing Burton, he was still the producer of Batman Forever PS: Batman Returns has its flows, but it's close to be a perfect superhero film, It's actually the movie of my childhood, the one I've seen the most

Re: The Dark Knight Rises OW Record Club of Tickets Now on S
So the same scenario played out twice for Batman in the nineties. "First" film a huge, crowd-pleasing hit. Then the director is given more freedom for the next film, resulting in alienating sequels defined by their creators' styles and obsessions. Batman & Robin is nothing if not every Joel Schumacher fetish indulged to the nth degree.
(I must say, though, I've never been a huge fan of the '89 Batman, despite good performances by Keaton and Nicholson. I'd say Returns is the far superior film in most every way.)

BMP wrote: I dont remember warner firing Burton, he was still the producer of Batman Forever PS: Batman Returns has its flows, but it's close to be a perfect superhero film, It's actually the movie of my childhood, the one I've seen the most He didn't do much in the way of producing Forever. He sat down with Schumacher and the script writers and told them his ideas about Batman. That was pretty much all he did on the project. Burton described his meeting with WB for a third Burton film as a situation where WB kept telling him, "Don't you want to do this other project? Don't you want to do something smaller?" He said after about 30 minutes of bullshit, he cut to the chase. "You guys really don't want me to make another sequel do you?" And that was the end of it.

And he went and did the brilliant Ed Wood, so a happy ending.
