As if you needed much evidence for whether Warner Bros.' next Batman offering The Dark Knight will be a certified mega-blockbuster, MovieTickets.com just released an internal poll showing that Christopher Nolan's latest offering could be the biggest debut of the summer, if not the entire year. According to the poll, 81% of male moviegoers and 66 percent of female moviegoers polled June 10-15 intend to see "The Dark Knight" opening weekend. 100% of ticket buyers polled were aware of The Dark Knight's release this summer, compared with 49% of ticket buyers three weeks before "The Incredible Hulk" and 36% of buyers three weeks before "Iron Man."
TDK making like its the 1990's it seems...

I still don't see why it would open with less than Iron Man's OW. As long as it kicks ass, it'll hold on well, too.

The thing everybody needs to remember is IMAX. Imax ticket prices range from $16-20; they're 600-7000 seat theaters. Every IMAX sell out TDK gets is potentially $14,000. It is going to be getting quite a few of them. There is talk here-
That imax theaters may show TDK round the CLOCK opening weekend-for 72 straight hours- to cash in on the immense potential. At 2 1/2 hours, thats 28 showing over the weekend. Thats roughly $392,000 in one weekend. Thats the tip-top of potential, but still...

Expectations are really really high from this movie both boxoffice and critically.
Has to get 100% on rottentomatoes.com because batman fans are expecting this to be the best shit ever and the entire movie blogging community thinks the same.
Since this has the biggest hype and buzz of all summer movies and it will be releasing in huge number of theatres and screens it has to do $145+ million OW and also $350+ million domestically.
Doing around IM or IJ4 numbers or less will be dissapointing.

Doing the same business as Indy or Iron Man would be great. Only the "haters" (for lack of a better word) would spin $315 million for Dark Knight as anything even resembling a disappointment.

The other thing I'm curious about is whether the tracking takes into account IMAX. I would think TDK will get a boost of around $5-10 million (or more) from IMAX since it was filmed partially with IMAX cameras and any Batman Begins fan worth his/her salt will see this in IMAX if they have one near them.

I say a 5m boost max on OW alone. Though in the long run, IMAX will help it a lot.
There are reports that some IMAX theaters will be running it around the clock for the entire weekend. I think it's going to be very big on IMAX, bigger than anyone thinks is possible because any Batman fan that knows about the filming of this movie will want to see it on IMAX.

I believe 300 holds the record for IMAX opening with 3.6m. I think TDK should shatter this probably and get around 9m from IMAX.
However, the amounst of "boost" from IMAX will only be 4.5m-5m. IMAX tickets are about double the amount of regular price tickets (at least where I'm from). So fact is that the 9m from IMAX would have been 4.5m regular, so the extra boost would be 4.5m.
Either way, TDK is a lock to break the record and a lock for the 2nd biggest July OW all-time and the biggest OW of the year.

Im pretty sure HP5 holds the IMAX record.
I doubt that. 300 was absolutely enormous in IMAX. I saw it at a theater that had a bowling alley in the complex. I showed up around 3 hours early and got tickets, then went bowling for a while. Came back around an hour and a half before the thing started and there was a huge line waiting to get into the IMAX theater. Luckily I still got a decent seat that wasn't up at the front, but I was pretty surprised at how packed the theater was considering it was a Monday.

Magnus, good point about the boost not being the actual ticket sales. But the way I look at is that this movie is going to be playing in so many regular theaters that IMAX theaters are not taking up necessary space for regular theaters. It's gonna open huge regardless, so anything it makes in IMAX is a boost I think.
