Re: The Little Mermaid > BATB OW of $174m *CLUB*
O wrote: Disney's last live action I've most enjoyed was Aladdin but that was one they took some big risks on. Will Smith as the Genie as strange as it sounded when it was announced miraculously worked well for me. He brought a unique spin to it and Aladdin as a whole was much better than the live action TLK. Jungle Book was also great but felt fresh at the time effects wise. So they took some risks there and it worked out.
TLK made so much $$$ but really felt it had no heart or real emotional resonance compared to the original.
Also surprised a studio hasn't bought a publisher like Scholastic. A treasure trove of classic book content. The model worked for Dr Seuss and Roald Dahl. Netflix did the Dahl deal, expect we'll see more there. Will smith in Aladdin was basically the only thing that worked in the LA imho. And props to him for that, he was really really good. But I still think Genie is better in the original even then. Not because of anything wrong with Smith, but just because when you have such a high-octane character as the Genie, it simply cannot have the same impact in a live action.

I expect it will get similar reviews to Beauty and the Beast and Mulan, fresh but still not that great. We’ll see in 39minutes.

Too few reviews to make a call now. i think its going to finish in 50s RT and MC. Some reviewers giving strong reviews for Halle's performance but lots of meh reviews saying its just a recycle of the great animated movie.
That said its not going to have much impact on its OW.

So it will probably end up between Aladdin and BATB on MC.

Mermaid has started badly in korea and china is looking to be a disaster. France initial rating is bad though BO does not look bad. I expect this to be among lowest grossing Disney LA in overseas markets. 250-300m OS.

Aladdin did 695.1m OS so I don't see this doing only 250-300m but more like 400-450m. 350m DOM for a 750-800m total or so.

There is also exchange rate now. $ is way stronger than 2019 time frame except comps with Mexican Peso which is at its strongest. As I said its absolutely bombing in Asia which was a huge market. Japan has given up on Disney stuff. Aladdin was a uber blockbuster there. So its reliant on Europe for big numbers. I am not seeing 400m for now. Comp it with Cindrella OS than any of the live action blockbusters.

Even South America looks just meh. Based on analysis it looks like 80m OW OS and sub 250m finish considering its opening everywhere. Competition is brutal with Spiderverse opening next weekend and Transformers the week following that. Then the summer is unrelenting anyway.

Early shows today looks to have grossed around 800-900K. it was mostly Dolby/XD/RPX and few imax/other PLF at smaller chains/locations. That said this movie is going to be all about Friday and weekend grosses. Friday presales are looking really strong. Thursday previews including early shows is ~11m for now.

This will be review bombed for sure. Even the verified audience score would be people pissed off with the "woke" choice from Disney. Already facing the pinch in overseas market and I expect outside the coasts and big cities this to under perform. That should not matter for box office as most of the box office is from those regioins :-)

I think the problem is audiences forever identified Ariel as a white redhead girl, and certain regions of the world make no fuss about having zero interest in seeing a black female lead. It's a lot of "not my Ariel" going on. The toy sales are bad too I bet. It's particularly bad for black women, black men seem to be more accepted as leading men in Asia/Latin America etc. But they really don't want black women. I can't think of the last film with a clear black female lead that was a big international hit. Black Panther Wakanda Forever is a case apart because it's in-built Marvel audience and also being a sequel to a film headed by a man. Hidden Figures, Us, A Wrinkle in Time all did bad overseas.
