Wow, on the Buzz index 9th place and a score of 15 is really good for a movie like KOH. Movies attracting an older audience tend to have low scores. The Interpreter wasn't even at 5 before released. 13 is weak for a movie like House of Wax since horror movies tend to get high rankings on that list. Amityville, TCM, and a bunch of others were all over 50 at this point.
As for the trailer chart, I consider it meaningless. The list of clicks and searches is heavily affected by the trailer list, so that is likely the cause of the high ranking for House of Wax there.

I could be wrong, but I get the feeling that Paris Hilton will have the same sort of effect on HoW's box office as all the Bennifer hype had on Gigli's. I'm not saying this movie will do nearly as bad as Gigli did, but Paris Hilton is an annoying celebrity that many people are sick of hearing about and I'm almost certain she'll do more harm than good to HoW's prospects of success.

I was using that argument for opening weekend...lol It looks stupid, and people associate Paris Hilton with stupid things. That is going to put people off. You have such a small audience potential for this film, because it's not going to win the adult audience from Kingdom of Heaven and Crash , the under 17 crowd is out because of the rating, and the horror audience will be getting pulled away by Amityville, and some will be burned out on the overkill. Where do you expect this audience to come from on opening weekend, Zingy? I still think it will be second this weekend, but a distant second. Well, first of all, The Amityville Horror won't hurt House of Wax. The Amityville Horror won't have more than $5 million this weekend, so I highly doubt that will hurt House of Wax. It'll be the other way around, if anything. Second of all, Kingdom of Heaven and Crash sure do have the adult audiences, but what about the 16-25 (or 16-30) year olds? I'm sure their choice would be House of Wax over the other two, and it's targeted at this age group, anyways. I don't think it's TRYING to get the adult audience, though it can get horror fans of adults and fans of the original House of Wax. For example, my dad is a horror fan, and he thinks House of Wax looks good. He wants to see it, but Kingdom of Heaven is his first choice. I'm surprised he wants to see Crash, though, because he's usually not into those types of movies. Well, I'm going to see Amityville this weekend, specifically on Saturday and I will thumb my nose at the House of Wax viewers while I enjoy no teens, no cell phones going off and no talking that made Amityville even more enjoyable.. Good luck for those who choose to sit through House of Wax knowing you'll have all of the above I've mentioned to contend with.. Man, where the hell do you live? There were just as many teens at my Amityville Horror showing then there were at any other horror movie released this year. I'm expecting the same with House Of Wax, but at least the teens have to be over 17 years old. My theater is uber-strict with the whole carding thing. They even have two security guards that stand in front of the big R rated movies every weekend.
I live in St.Louis which aren't that overly fanatic when it comes to movies I guess.. I've seen Amityville 3 times and all 3 times, the crowd I was with was a much older crowd than usual for a horror movie like this.. The 3rd time I saw it, there were 2 girls in front of me that looked under 17 by the way they acted throughout the movie and there 2 boyfriends next to them that got them in.. For the most part, I was impressed and it was mellow, less talking, no cell phones going off and it just made it a pleasant going experience all around.. I'd like to see it 1 more time though before it's gone and do against House of Wax and compare crowd wise..

Yeah, and that basically messes up my whole planned schedule.
Out of the three movie I wanted to see before Episode III ( Unleashed, Kingdom of Heaven, and Crash), I'll have to skip one.

I think you'll enjoy Monster-in-Law.
Zingy, I did try, I really did. I hope that this thread did help some of you guys weigh the options and come to the conclusion that the case made by myself and others was just too good not to consider lowering your predictions. We can't get it right all of the time, but I was about as close to 100% as it gets with my feelings on this, which was my reason for starting this thread, and making the bet that I made, giving myself no allowances for it going over 15 million, even though I could have.
As for next weekend's box office, don't be afraid to believe in Monster-in-Law to do very well. More on that later and in a different thread.

Michael wrote: Lecter, the very fact that this IS "typical teenie slasher" is whats going to make it a hit. There hasn't been a teen slasher like this for a very long time. The slasher genre has all but been replaced with bad thrillers and creepy Japanese terrorist children; people miss the horror comedy genre where everything is done tounge in cheek and the audience cheers at a murder rather than screams. And this coming from a big fan of Japanese Horror; its time for a revival of the All American Gorefest.
Wax has a Scream quality about it; its marketing has been the most exceptional for any horror of the year IMHO and if people dont love the teen stars; theyd go to see em die. A guilty pleasure indeed. The suggestion this film is buzzing because of Paris Hilton is far fetched to say the least; shes an internet star? Really? Aside from the cheap porn video that people OFFLINE also saw I dont see anything tying Paris Hiltons stardom to the internet. Sure shes a star of the movie; but its not like the world and its brother would go see a Hilton movie..
So i pretty much disagree with the parent poster of this thread and Dr Lecter. Wax has been buzzing for a long time; and if anything i think its being sorely underpredicted. But maybe thats just me; im willing to take a chance on films from time to time and this is one of them.
*feeds crow*
Well, Zing has already gotten more than enough of his share of crow for xXx (which he shared with me and Moviedude) and HOW. Now it's your turn.
Just don't eat too fast

Yeah, yeah, Mav. I know.
Believe me, though. You will be wrong on a movie sometime soon, and I will shine.

Oh, you know Unleashed is going to be exactly like almost every movie you see.
Try Monster-in-Law, which will at least be a change of pace

I'm glad HOW was overpredicted as I expected. More like Ghost Ship then most of the other horrors this year.
Poor Zing, I couldn't imagine having to watch Monster in Law.

I already was wrong, as KOH won't be clearing 100 million, but I wouldn't have made any bets on that. I don't plan on being wrong anytime soon, and, if fact, I think it's gonna be my year. \:D/ Next week should be fun, as everybody is scared to go high on predictions. Look for the audience to start turning out in much higher numbers. You heard it here first.

True I suppose; when I think about it there are probably over a dozen wide releases this year I'd want to see even less.
Boogeyman, White Noise, The Wedding Date, Racing Stripes, Are We There Yet?, Alone in the Dark, Amityville, Man of the House, Son of the Mask, The Pacifier, Guess Who, MC 2, Ice Princess, Fever Pitch, and that's just off the top of my head.
But worst of all I couldn't imagine having to miss out on a movie like Unleased in theaters and having to see Monster In Law instead.

I'm not upset, DP07. Like I said, I'm using this bet to my advantage. I'm taking my mom to see it tomorrow for Mother's Day.
Kill two birds with one stone.
And, Mav, even if you're wrong next weekend, I'll be wrong, too. I do expect Kicking and Screaming to pull around $28-30M, Monster-in-Law to pull $20-22M, and the other openers... well, the studios screwed up, so both under $10M.

What about Unleashed makes it *so* appealing? I mean, it just looks like a random action movie concoction to me.
I guess that's why I'm not a guy?

I wish. Me madre would get mad that I took her to a movie and didn't even pay attention.
Plus, I'll probably write a review for the site.

I might be higher on both of those. I'll be doing a bit more investigating first, and also will be taking this sneak preview into account.
I, too, can't really see the appeal of Unleashed, as it just doesn't look like it's anything that I haven't seen before.

I'll see if Monster-in-Law is sold out tomorrow, but I wouldn't use it to predict.
If you remember, Fever Pitch, Team America: World Police, and The Girl Next Door all had sold out sneak previews...

I was thinking more in terms of how WOM could be for the following weekend. If it's really funny, I'd probably be inclined to go higher, but if it's boring and lame, and the audience doesn't like it much, I'd expect them to tell all their friends about it, and I'd go lower.
