Wonder Woman 1984 doing HBO Max/Theaters release Christmas
Welp.
I'm not really sure how to feel about this but I'm glad I get to finally see the movie.

So it's releasing on both platforms then. About time something gets released.

I'm wondering if WB has already talked to theater chains... I'm guessing that's a yes.
Not really sure about its box office considering the state of coronavirus. Would be something if it did less than Birds of Prey's numbers worldwide.

Not really.
A blockbuster can't make the same type of profit from streaming. It'll take a looooong time but movie theaters will not be obsolete.

It's a start where the movie going business will reduce exponentially as more studios are forced to do the same. I believe theaters will make a come back in a decade or so but movies will not longer be same and we'll have to have records post-COVID.

Happy to get it for “free” but they could have waited on this one or put it up for $25 easy. Feel like this is more of an AT&T decision than WB.

Re: Wonder Woman 1984 doing HBO Max/Theaters release Christm
For the time being, I'm probably going to hold off and wait for the Blu-ray/4K release for most films I'm interested in. Saw a commercial for Mulan already being on home video (what did that take, two months tops?), which made me glad I didn't subscribe and pay the premium to watch it on Disney+.
I just really don't want to have to be subscribed to multiple services just to watch (or pay a premium for) the films I'm interested in.
A few times a month, we go and buy popcorn from our local independent theater to help them out financially, but since the people here are 50/50 on masks, and even with the newly issued mask mandate last week here, chances are people will just remove them once they're sitting down anyway. So, pretty unlikely to go to the theater to watch a movie for awhile.
I ultimately believe this is bad news for the cinema chains though. It'd be one thing if the government actually did what they were hired and paid to do like the rest of us are expected to at our jobs, and passed relief to help the chains out (in addition to everyone else), but we have children in charge. Well, bad children, as most children are even more competent, really.

If theaters are still open by Christmas I’ll see it in theaters. If not, gonna be one heck of a streaming day with both this and Soul coming out lol.

Re: Wonder Woman 1984 doing HBO Max/Theaters release Christm
I wonder whether this or Soul will do better. Surely Wonder Woman is a bigger film, but Disney Plus is far more ubiquitous than HBO Max. I expect it will easily be the biggest streaming day of all time across all platforms.

In terms of subscriptions I think there isn't that much room for Disney+ to grow while HBO Max will certainly see a big percentage increase in subscriptions.

Re: Wonder Woman 1984 doing HBO Max/Theaters release Christm
One issue I thought of: HBO Max still doesn’t have 4K HDR, which was absurd even last year and I think a big part of why people couldn’t see anything during The Long Night episode. Hmm. Seeing it in the best way possible should be a priority, but watching it at 3am without any covid people around will be too tempting to pass up.

Sadly I think the theatrical experience is coming to an end. Someday we will our grand kids about "going to the movies" and they will look at us like we grew a second head. I would love to watch this is the theater but MN is shutting down again tomorrow at midnight. Streaming is the now and the future.

I plan to see it on the big screen.

Too bad. HBO max is not worth this. This is going to be a disaster if you have to get different streaming services. It would make more sense if the theater chains all joined up together with a streaming platform.

My area is up in the air, we’re sort of liberal out here in the Philadelphia suburbs but not as liberal as Philadelphia itself, so hoping theaters can stay open at limited capacity by then.

Zack - I’m pretty sure any local large AMC theater will have it. You might have to drive a bit but some theater in the Philly metro area will have screenings. Movies like WW84 are best seen in a theater. Call me old fashioned.

It’s too liberal to dismiss the possibility. Philadelphia is 2 counties over and has its movie theaters shut down.

What does being in a liberal county have anything to do with movie theaters staying open? Things close when a county goes over a certain % whether they’re a conservative or liberal county.
Stop. Politicizing. COVID-19.
