That’s about half of Top Gun, which bodes well for 60m+

Deadline saying 10m opening for M3gan. Lol. I knew it'd bomb. At least the budget is 25m.

Great to see F1 doing well. Hopefully it crosses $60m OW.

Anything over $50M is an awesome opening for F1 and it should play well throughout the rest of the summer too. Brad Pitt pulls out a random big June movie every ten years or so. F1 gets to join the club with World War Z and Mr./Mrs. Smith.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
They really dropped the ball with M3gan. Taking out the horror element and making it look like a campy action movie was a horrible choice lol

It should have kept the horror and released in January. They killed this potential franchise really fast. Maybe it can still leg out to 30 Million .

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
The Prince Caspian rule strikes again. Let’s move Narnia to the summer instead of its original release date and make lots of money there. Nope! Sorry M3Gan!
Though no one has said it let’s be real, the first film opened two months after Chat GPT was unveiled. It was the perfect release date. They should have upped the ante in another way but timing was also critical there though a Jan release would have helped it stand out.

Lilo has a slight chance to beat Minecraft but will probably bleed theaters next few weeks.

Changing the release date and the tone really hurt it. Even a March release could have been OK. Interestingly, they have a related film - Soulm8te coming out in January. This disaster surely has hurt its potential.

I originally liked the contrast with F1 in a male/female way if they had actually connected online, but this seems cooked from the genre change.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
An original film breaks out while a promising franchise meets a swift end with an epic bomb. Exciting weekend after last weekend's dullness.
The Megan people minsterpreting this franchise's appeal will go down in movie history as an all timer "what were they thinking?" This franchise was Chucky for zoomers, and yet they somehow got the idea that it was actually Terminator for gays. Probably should have just made an entirely seperate franchise for that, but it still probably would have been a huge swing and miss. Girls are who carry these types of films and you gotta market to them before anyone else.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
Smile 2 didn't do so well as a horror sequel last year either. I'm not so optimistic about Black Phone 2 either.
What is the last horror sequel to improve on its predecessor?

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
Black Phone 2 probably will do less than the original, but I personally think it looks much better than the first. It does have a solid release date as the only big horror movie in October.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
There is a litany of horror sequels disappointing. Some others off the top of my head (many to originals that were WOM hits):
- The Ring Two - Blair Witch 2 - Exorcist 2 - Jaws 2 - Halloween 2 - Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - The Grudge 2 - Smile 2 - IT 2
The ones that did better were Scream 2, Saw 2, Aliens, Paranormal Activity 3, Insidious 2 etc

Insidious: Chapter 2 did better than Insidious.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
Yes, good call. I thought of The Conjuring (which went down a bit) but Insidious did indeed go up.
Paranormal Activity 2 went down from the first but then spiked with the third film.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
A Quiet Place Day One is probably the best example as it advertised itself (misleadingly) as much more action oriented and saw a series high opening.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
Also, F1 was great and I see it as this year's Twisters. Should be able to leg out $200M, especially since it will keep its imax theaters against Jurassic Flop this week.

 Re: F1/M3gan 2 weekend
A Quite Place franchise is one of the good ones in terms of BO. The second one came out during Covid and still did well.
