Mufasa rises to #1 in its 3rd weekend. Wicked has the worst drop of the top 12. Decent re-release for Se7en. Babygirl goes up $2K from last weekend. The 7 re-release cume is too low. It had scraped by $100m back in 95 Updated. Looks like The Numbers data was slightly off so used Mojo.

Wicked might not have dropped below 1m a day till Jan 22 if it wasn’t for the digital release.

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
Others are already saying it but it’s worth repeating— releasing Wicked on streaming was a bad decision & a dumb business move. I’m sure it’s making Universal money on rentals and purchases BUT I think it would have made the same amount from those sources if it released in March. Wicked is such a theatrical, cinematic, immersive fantasy musical that deserves to be seen in theaters… and it would have played much longer if they had kept it from home access for longer. They diluted their own magic by doing this.

No. It's a clever business move. Anyone who says otherwise is just a selfish box office fan that wants to see a longer run and a larger box office total. But Universal does not care about that. They care about what share they get to keep. With the sliding scale of the theatrical model Universal will be getting almost nothing from it now that it's been out for 1.5 months, so the new revenue stream of rental/streaming makes perfect business sense where they keep all of the money.

Seven was a weird re release. It's such a dead genre, plus you have Spacey baggage. I feel like Passion of Christ seems like a missed opportunity given the 20 year anniversary, maybe when the new one comes out.

Tuesday #'s
1. MUFASA ($2.5M) / $172.7M -66% 2. SONIC 3 ($2M) / $191.4M -73% 3. NOSFERATU ($1.8M) / $72.4M -38% 4. A COMPLETE UNKNOWN ($1.3M) / $43.9M -54% 5. WICKED ($1M) / $452.3M -73%
The comparables were New Year's Eve from last Tuesday so not the fairest to compare with but that Nosferatu number any way you look at it is very impressive. It's not that far from getting to #1 in dailies. Feeling like it could get to $130M+.

1. Mufasa $1.4M -87% 2. Nosferatu $1.3M -74% 3. Sonic 3 $1.1M -88% 4. ACU $1M -69% 5. Wicked $0.8M -84% 6. Moana $0.6M -88%
Will stop updating these soon but Nosferatu is now $100K away from #1! The comparable was New Year's Day so pretty big tumbles. Good for ACU!

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
Apparently, Wicked made $70 million in its first week of digital release. Universal gets to keep a whopping 80% of every dollar earned. It probably made sense, looking back, to indeed capitalize on the holiday season’s digital business and leave theater exclusivity as early as it did. https://www.darkhorizons.com/wicked-ear ... l-release/

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
Universal might've reasoned it made sense to expose the film to the widest audience possible now that it's still hyped and relevant during its theatrical run, that way there are more fans for Part 2, which I'm sure they hoping will have a massive opening especially if the rumours of Dorothy & co. having major roles is true.

Apparently the Queer Craig movie has a 50 mil budget. Guadagnino saved himself by also having Challengers this year.

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
In the same universe that a 90s UK music star makes a movie that costs $100M and also sets himself as a CGI monkey? Pharrells $16M budget Lego Movie seems smart compared to that one.

Lol I wish we lived in a world where a gay romance movie can do big numbers but we don't. Brokeback Mountain was the one but it had waaaay more hype, and it was way cheaper too at like a $15M budget.

Especially since the poster reads "borderline porn" and not "cute romance" I mean, if advertised as a cute romance it would be misleading. It's a trippy drama about a drug addict. I was always shocked by the budget. It's a great looking film, but there was no way it was going to make its money back. It's not even just that it's gay. It's just too damn weird for most people.

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
Sunday numbers seemed a lot better than expected for some films like Mufasa which went up $1M. Likely people were busy with last minute prep to head back to work, school, bad weather impact, etc.?
Mufasa's Sat and Sun drops are very encouraging for the MLK weekend. It dropped -62% from previous Friday, then -33% Sat and finally -21% Sunday. Could be another strong weekend for it with the inflated Sunday and holiday Monday.

Magic Mike wrote: I mean, if advertised as a cute romance it would be misleading. It's a trippy drama about a drug addict. Therein lies the problem with gay-themed projects. It is still seen as a lifestyle of promiscuity or, well, it ultimately just not being the normal way. So any project will be flawed from the beginning. Most people don't associate with that lifestyle, and don't have the patience for it. The community has also never let people discover it themselves and grow naturally. They force it down people's throats at every opportunity, and thus your movies are all flops. The quiet majority is like "they can do whatever they want, I just don't want to know about it", and that is why gay-themed projects aren't big. They are only made for gay people, and even gay people reject them because they are quite flawed people too. "I'm not going to see it JUST because it's a gay movie. I'm not JUST defined by my sexuality!". They get all uppity when things are made specifically for them, lol. So, any gay-themed project is doomed to fail when even their own supporters aren't supporting them. They're basically like women; fickle as hell, and intent on creating drama even when things are done explicitly for them.

Re: Post Holidays Weekend box office
I agree that if they made a straight romance version of the movie and with that aesthetic it wouldn't have made anything either.
Better Man I could see how on paper they thought Greatest Showman director's next musical with CGI monkey for the kids to watch could be holiday season type hit. But like Joker 2 the central idea just flopped miserably and its total is current 1/10th of Greatest Showman's in the UK so it's not just cause Americans don't care about Robbie.

Absolutely not, in fact most would confuse him with robin williams.
Man Better Man is like the strangest idea ever. I think it’s just a bit too close an SNL sketch, and the effects look worse than Cats. I think a better movie would have been Williams at a pitch meeting saying “ I want to make movie about me, but I don’t want to be me, I want to be a monkey and I want to look evil even though I’m spreading joy” You can’t make a movie like this with the Planet of the Apes movies out there.
I hear it’s good though
