Encanto keeps breaking records though none at the box office ($97M domestic/$250M total at best):

-Disney's biggest pop culture animated hit since Frozen if not bigger.
-Pushing 5 weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. More than any other Disney film.
-Album could become top one of 2022. #1 now for its 7th week.
-1st album/song combo to lead Billboard 200/Hot 100 for 5+ weeks since The Bodyguard.
-Limited Disney+ data out there but 1.4 billion streaming minutes reported for multiple weeks in Jan.

How will it's sequel do, especially if theatrical only?

Feel like we're due for an Austin Powers, Incredibles 2, type jump. Right now I can't see it not approach $400M+ / $1B+.

Watch them put it straight to D+ lol. Ugh

The film certainly feels huge like Frozen, sucks the box office was cut off but the D+ release was how so many people watched it and how Bruno has been such a smash hit. If they were to make a sequel it should do very well but who knows what Disney will do... hopefully rhey make a Zootopia 2 first.

It would be huge as a theatrical only film.

Knowing Disney this will take like 6 years, but 400+

Nielson just released the list of most streamed movies and no surprise, Encanto dominated and more than doubled the #2 film.

Turning Red is #2 over Sing 2, which made $163M domestically. Turning Red could have been a $200M+ film.

Hocus Pocus at #6. Clearly would have done $150M domestic.

Encanto didn't barely win the year for movie streaming, its 140% higher than #2 Turning Red. Given the musical phenomenon it became in Q1 2022 and blockbuster success, a theatrical sequel feels like it's going to be monstrous!

Also good to see Zootopia continues to remain popular 7 years later. The sequel will be massive as the original remains popular.

That is impressive considering how many people watched Encanto the last 5 weeks of 2021. Frozen II type numbers for sure for the sequel.

If the movie domination wasn't enough, it was a major player in album sales and on the songs charts. 9 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 (most since Frozen for soundtracks). Was also #1 for 24 nonconsecutive weeks on Billboard’s Kid Albums chart. 24/52 weeks!

It'll be interesting to see when Disney has another $150m+ animated grosser again. If Elemental doesn't do it then it'll probably be awhile.

The numbers are impressive, but I dunno if its fair to compare family movies to others since parents/kids will watch the same thing over and over and over again.

Eternals was the most viewed Marvel movie on disney plus? bizarre

My theory is maybe the recent Marvel movies phase has less repeat viewings. Shang Chi, Thor, Dr. Strange all had big box office grosses so were already seen by the fans once theatrically. Eternals made $164,616,321 theatrically so fewer people had seen it overall and skipped it initially (and Covid cases were going up again). So makes it important to watch before new Marvel movies come out for continuity.

So Encanto 2 I am now convinced is going to be a major, major event, possibly at or even higher than Moana 2. Moana has been consistent in the top 4 most streamed films of the year 2020 - 2023 which is incredible and clearly the sequel's performance reflects that this weekend.

No movie has dominated at the level Encanto did in 2022. Turning Red 2 would also be incredibly promising but feeling like an Encanto 2 could be a massive favorite to win whichever year it comes out. Nor has anything dominated the music charts like it has at least since Let It Go.

Nah. Moana came out in 2016, so to still be in the top 4 four/five/six/seven years later is impressive, and therefore makes sense that Moana 2 is a success.

Encanto came out at the very very very end of 2021, so having the entire year of 2022 to get views is why it was massive in 2022. Its drop off in 2023 is for all to see ... so much that a film that is seven years old beat it, and it more-or-less made the same as the meh received Elemental. Conclusion: Encanto 2 isn't going to be anywhere near as big as Moana 2.

I agree Encanto didn’t have the staying power of Moana, but it still was a huge hit that a sequel would do very well.

It should at least get to the $200-250m mark.
