Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron, December 8
Would've been cool if we got no trailer like Japan but I'm hyped for it.
Coming December 8 and it's getting Imax screens! This is kind of uncharted territory as Miyazaki's films certainly have built a big following but idk how that'd translate to as his last film, The Wind Rises, didn't have a wide release. Should be interesting. If it gets a wide release I certainly think it'd open over 20m.

Yeah, this has a ton of potential. I feel like even in the decade since The Wind Rises, Miyazaki's profile has only gone up in the state, as most millennials and zoomers have grown up with his movies and are passing them on to the next generation, so as long as GKids keeps going strong with the marketing (and securing an IMAX run suggests they will), it could be a pretty sizable hit for them - not sure about $20M+ opening, but $20M+ total is very possible (which would be a record for an original anime).

Considering how GKIDS handle the First Slam Dunk, an animation with perfect rottentomatoes score plus certified fresh logo, which in North America, end up just a little bit over 1% of the gross fom Japan, I don't have any hope even for Ghibli in term of box office. I'd keep my fingers crossed on winning an Oscars instead.

https://www.the-numbers.com/market/distributor/GKIDSHmmm ok yeah $20m sounds too ambitious lol I guess it depends on how wide it is. First Slam Dunk was so good, too bad it didn't get a chance. It barely played on my area.

Certainly won't be a big opener, but could generate a nice gross over time.

Re: Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron, December 8
First Slam Dunk was always gonna be at a disadvantage in the US because the manga doesn't have much of any cultural footprint here, so getting it to over $1 million is still kind of impressive. I think their handling of Weathering with You and Belle (which also got IMAX screens for a day or two) shows more promise, since those were director-driven original films that managed to over-perform.

Looks good, sad to see they’re split with Disney which was ironically over streaming rights. Under the Disney umbrella, this would have been his biggest film, but who knows

Domestic Miyazaki's biggest film is Ponyo at $15m. Think this should easily beat it unless it doesn't go in over 1000 theaters.

So many people watched his movies on Netflix so expect this could overperform but why go in the crowded Christmas block. Could really gain some momentum earlier in the fall that I could see it get squashed by Wonka.

I actually think pre-Christmas could be ideal, the holiday stretch has shown to be able to expand and accommodate many movies with overlapping audiences. Although personally, for some reason, I’m not very excited for this. I remember seeing both Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle in theaters, absolutely loving them both (and Princess Mononoke on DVD), but since then my experience with Miyazaki movies has been less enamored.

I kinda expect a better result but at least its perfect Tomatometer is still unscratched.

English dub announcement, this cast will be used in both North America and UK, and I assume in all other English-speaking countries too.

Great cast but pointless since no one wants an English dub.

We had some screenings (couldn't get in) but there was a long line up 2 hours+ before the movie even started. Think this is going to outperform box office expectations.

should do 20m minimum with the support it's getting. Great help would be if actors strike ends and some of the dub actors promote it.

With the way this year is going, maybe Miyazaki can beat Marvels too. With the holidays and growth of his fanbase, would be a fitting way to end the randomness of 2023!

IMAX will screen 4 days earlier than wide release date. I'm wondering how this will impact box-office report, especially the first weekend. It could be lower since people will already watch it on weekdays, or it could be higher if it can generate positive word-of-mouth.

Yep, GKIDS has done it again, destroying its own gem
For those who're wondering what's wrong with this number. Even though it will be the widest GKIDS opening, apparently it's lower than Godzilla-1, and -1 is a "subtitle-only" movie.
