I think it is nostalgia and the audiences it is aimed at grew up with the Manga/Anime and I think are coming in full force for Slam Dunk.

See, that's what I assume, too, so the majority (maybe vast) of the audience will probably be somewhere between 30-50 (give or take a few years). This *should* mean the avg. ticket price will be relatively high (1400 or better), but let's wait and see.

The Sunday will also help tell us. If it drops ~20%+ tomorrow, then it's largely the fanbase going to see it. If it has a normal ~5-15% decline, then it might suggest a majority of fans, but perhaps some casual appeal too (given its status/recognizability). And if it manages an increase... I'd assume it has a decent bit of casual appeal.

But lots of unknowns here. I feel like I say this all the time, but there's not really a good precedent to go off of here.

Reception appears mostly positive, maybe borderline mixed in the early days(s). Seeing several "on the edge of your seat action, excellent story, etc., however... the CGI blows" comments out there. Probably should have kept it traditional animation if everything else except the CGI is being praised.

Just a question.. Do we know what the movie is about?? Like I even looked at the Japanese Wikipedia article and it seems not to have a synopsis.

I don't really want spoilers of the movie per see (Though I read Slam Dunk entirely, so manga spoilers are ok for me). But like there is so little information about the movie.. I find it so weird. Is it a remake of the first arc? A continuation? Original story?

I have no idea. There's no info on the official Japanese sites either. The "synopsis" is literally "the film depicts the growth of a high school basketball club." :funny:

None of the teasers/clips revealed anything, and I haven't seen any actual info regarding the story shared by a soul online.

They definitely succeeded keeping the story a mystery if that was their goal (seems like it had to have been). I suppose this makes it a "must-see" for all fans in a way. They all want to know what it is after 26 years and are coming to check it out. (Reviews have seen an uptick, by the way, so I'd say it's gone from mixed to positive.)

It'll be interesting to see if Toei decides to finish adapting the manga after all this time with the success of the movie though, either as films (if this "First" film is already doing that, who knows) or anime. It's early, yeah, but the opening clearly shows there's still a ton of interest in Slam Dunk, and even if it would be really frontloaded, it's almost certain to get up to ~¥5 billion (blockbuster mark). But I don't want to make any predictions right now.

It's the Sannoh match from the manga. I saw a few leaked clips.

Yeah, around a 20-ish% drop. This isn't exactly bad, likely just indicates it's appealing heavily toward the fanbase and few others.

My estimates:

Sat: ¥690-750 million ($5.1-5.5 million) / ~500,000-525,000 admissions
Sun: ¥550-600 million ($4.1-4.4 million) / ~400,000-420,000 admissions
OW: ¥1.24-1.35 billion ($9.2-9.9 million) / ~900,000-945,000 admissions

Pretty spectacular. And as mentioned, even if it is appealing primarily to the fanbase and will see steady declines from hereon, the opening is big enough to basically guarantee ¥5 billion, so consider that a "worst-case" if the opening is in the range above.

Indeed. Excellent fourth weekend. You'll be impressed where it ranks on the Biggest Fourth Weekends Chart, I bet. I'll share that soon.

Thanks, just saw a leaked clip too. Wow. What a weird decision to name the movie "The First" when it is about the last match in the story... Like.. Why not make the match before this one too??

Also the CGI looks beautiful in this movie. I guess it works for more realistic stuff.

From Kogyotsushin:
Quote:
"THE FIRST SLAM DUNK" (Toei), which was made into a new animation movie by Takehiko Inoue with his own director and screenplay, mobilized 847,000 people in two days on Saturdays and Sundays, and earned 1.296 billion yen at the box office. ranked high. The original, which depicts the personal growth of players based on high school basketball, boasts a cumulative circulation of 120 million copies in Japan. No synopsis has been revealed for the new work, and the voice cast other than Sogo Nakamura as Ryota Miyagi, Jun Kasama as Hisashi Mitsui, Shinichiro Kamio as Kaede Rukawa, Subaru Kimura as Hanamichi Sakuragi, and Kenta Miyake as Takenori Akagi. Unannounced, the first day of public release has arrived.

In 2nd place was "Suzume no Tojimemari" (Toho), which had been in 1st place for 3 weeks in a row, and recorded 555,000 people and 74800 yen in box office revenue over 2 days on Saturdays and Sundays. Cumulative results exceeded 5.61 million mobilization and box office revenue of 7.595 billion yen.

Great start for Slam Dunk. Unless it has Kamen Rider level of terrible legs 5 billion seems locked

Pretty amazing. I know we've had a string of ¥1 billion openers (including the two biggest OWs of all-time) over the past couple years when most years only have a couple reach it, but it's still no less amazing here. And yeah, ¥5 billion is 99.9% locked up. Still hard to project how it'll hold, but it should be able to target ¥7/8 billion.

I'll be posting several charts here in a few, just note that the admissions (847,000) are rounded (so they're between 846,500-847,499) for the initial press reports, so I'll edit in the actual figure when they come in vs reposting the same charts over again later. The avg. ticket price reaching ¥1,530 is notably high too. Probably safe to say it's appealing primarily to adults between ~30-50 (the fans from the 90s, basically).

Toei is projecting ¥10B as targetted final... I don't know how extensive it is as Dragon Ball Super Super Hero which was projected for ¥4B just did ¥2.49B..

However if it manage then 2023 will really be very great year to start with

And yeah, keep in mind that Japanese distributors have a habit (or strategy, really) of over-projecting totals to generate increased interest and buzz. It can help bring in those on the fence or even casuals (especially if the reception is strong, and/or there's another reason to see it such as chart-topping songs). Seeing reports that a film is on target for ¥10 billion is a lot more eye-catching than ¥7 billion, for example. Sometimes they do reach (or exceed) the "projections", but think of it as a sort of "ultimate" goal.

This one is a big tricky to project too, so we'll see. The opening is certainly high enough to reach ¥10 billion, or get quite close, with slightly better than average legs (7.72 multiplier in this case), but it's hard to say how it'll hold if it's appealing largely to the fanbase. On the other hand, if it IS appealing strongly to the fanbase, Toei could always introduce some giveaways during the run too.

It is appealing to the fan base, not just that but it's appealing to the manga-readers only since it adapts the last match (skipping an entire match that was never adapted to anime).

The original Slam Dunk is a 31 volume manga, the original anime covered volumes 1 to like 20ish iirc.

The match covered in this volume is volumes 26 to 31, so they left volumes 21 to 25 unadapted.

That's why I think it's a strange decision...

But anyways, the manga sold 120 million volumes in Japan iirc (Probably a bit more now, since there was a re-edition that topped oricon a couple years ago), but what I am trying to get to is that 120mill/31 volumes= 4 million people.

That's 4'000,000 people in Japan that read the last arcs, that's what the movie is appealing to.
(Obviously more people read the ending, people that read it in Weekly Shonen Jump, which had a staggering circulation of 6.5 million during Jump's Golden era -1990s to 1995s- the era which btw ended with Slam Dunk's ending. Also the people that asked their friends to grab their volumes.)

But that's their target audience unless you want to go to the movie new to the franchise and spoil yourself of the last match in the series.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, it's also for the people that watched the first anime series I guess.. they skipped a match but like I guess for the people that watched the original anime it's not that bad.
What I was trying to say is that it is definitely not a "newbies friendly movie". Like it's not an introductory movie.

Reading this makes me giggle a little bit because distributors in my country also doing this. Like, if movie get to 50 million they'll make a headline about "MOVING FORWARD TO 100 MILLION", and of couse, some movies failed to reach the project goal.

Thanks for that information, Rija. With that known, legs will probably be a bit limited (or at least nothing crazy strong). If the vast majority of the fanbase comes out, which is likely, it should be able to reach around ¥5.5-6 billion. But if you factor in some repeat viewings, and the potential of giveaways that can bring the fans back, it could certainly go higher.

Monday doesn't look particularly promising for legs to me, thinking 7bish.

OPR had some pretty great holds in the weeks before SD but this past week really died out, with SD doing really well I assume Toei will just focus on pushing that now. Was looking like it had a solid shot at 19b but it seems rather hard now.
