Also, slam dunk released the first pv and it looks like it's CG. That puts a damper on my expectations for the film.

Yeah, it's getting a mixed reaction. It's a very short PV so it's hard to really tell what it'll look like, but it does appear to be relying on CGI.

I think most fans will still likely come out, but it might put a cap on maximum potential there and negatively impact repeat viewings if it's not stunning. Feels like Toei is unnecessarily shooting themselves in the foot.

Also, some are speculating this may be the first of a two part film or even trilogy of films since the arc it's adapting is long? If so, and this first film doesn't meet expectations, any sequels will take a hit. The opposite is also true, if it's a big hit the sequels will do well, but going the CGI route with older, especially iconic, series almost always disappoint in some manner.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: RIP Kazuki Takahashi
In what has to be one of the most shocking events to ever happen in Japan in modern times, former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot about 15 mins ago while delivering a speech. For those in the unknown, he's near the top of the list of the most iconic/famous, reformative (what have you) PMs in Japan's history (since it was introduced in the Meiji period back in 1867).

No news on his condition yet, but he was rushed to the hospital, bleeding. Hope I don't have to change the title of this thread...

The suspect has been caught.

No updates on Abe's condition, but photos and videos show the suspect (40 yo man) was about 10 feet (~3 meters) away from Abe when he fired two shots from behind.

The gun, from the few photos, appears to be some homemade double-barrel shotgun.

Yeah, thanks for sharing. Just read the shooter is a former SDF member. Must be how he had access to the bullets, but it's still in question how he did this. I suppose he could have obtained bullets from the SDF when he left, but even then, their bullets are logged and tracked too, so it's weird that he could have stolen them. The gun was homemade, so that's explanatory. The ammunition used is the real question (maybe it wasn't even normal bullets).

Japan has some of the strictest gun laws in the world, and as such, have almost no shootings or gun-related deaths, typically in the single-digits each year. 2021's ten cases (one death) was high, the highest since 2011's eleven cases, if I recall.

Will almost certainly be due to Abe's politics. He's one of the most famous and reformative PMs in Japan's history, and as such, he's also made many enemies in that time.

I don't know if the lack of updates on his condition over the past ~2 hours is a good thing or not. If he's passed, they'd want to prepare such an announcement, of course. But if he's managed to recover, they might not want to make any announcement until they're certain either.

Seems reasonable. He is still my favourite PM (Tbh, I don't like the current leader) Party has currently suspended all campaigns in wake of shooting

The former SDF term actually ended on 2005.

So much crazy news the past day or two! I'm going on vacation starting tomorrow as mentioned, but I'll be around for most of the day.

Apparently he has now died. Such a shame. So it's now an assassination. :(

I'm not claiming to be an ardent fan or even to be that knowledgeable of his policies or life, but I always liked him. He felt like a safe, respectable democratic leader, and he's probably the only Japanese PM I could name at the time of his reign.

Chinese netizens, however, are expressing joy at his death. And these comments are not being censored or wiped by the government (which they could if they wanted to), so that's also how the CCP feels about it despite what their official announcement will be. China is so full of hatred. But anyway, sad day.

There's no bigger name in modern politics in Japan than Shinzo Abe. It's no exaggeration to say he was among the top five most consequential PMs in Japan's history (and the longest serving, 2006-2007; 2012-2020).

I didn't care for his politics, but will say that revisiting Article 9 of their constitution (which prevents Japan from having a military beyond defense) that he promoted is something I could get behind. Japan is located in a bad area if things go south, as they continue to, in the region. And if they can only react defensively, things could be quite bad/deadly for them. Yes, the US is obligated to protect them as part of their agreement, but that does only escalate things more on a global scale. So, revisiting Article 9 of their post-WW2 constitution is something that needs to be considered, I feel, as unfortunate as it is.

He did lead the way while in office on this issue, and was planning to tackle it in 2020, but his ulcerative colitis resurfaced and he had to resign.

Isn't that already showing signs of changing? I cannot remember the details now, but I read something a few weeks ago about there being a deviation in that policy. Was it something about nuclear weapons? or fueling Ukraine with non-defensive weapons?

These cover a general basis of that's been done over the past decade to bolster Japan's military (or defense force) and defensive capabilities by working around Article 9, and what is being done now/being considered, amid growing concerns from China, Russia, and North Korea.

Being in a location where warships (more and more all the time it seems) from China and Russia are near/in your waters so often, and North Korea testing missiles next door, you'd imagine concerns have escalated substantially in recent years.

Not to defend the Chinese, or the awful assassination, but to give a perspective: Abe held a revisionist stance on history, including denials of the Nanjing Massacre--the mass murder and rape of thousands of Chinese residents during WWII. He was also instrumental in downplaying the existence of comfort women, Chinese, and other nationalities, who were forced to work in wartime brothels for the Japanese Imperial Army in WWII. The Japanese officially apologized via the Kono Statement, which was retracted under Abe's administration for, “insufficient objective evidence supporting the testimony of the women that the Japanese military forced them to provide sex.”

So, no, I don't think the Chinese would exactly be crying over this.

Back to box-office (but feel free to share thoughts and updates Abe's assassination, too), I'm estimating that Thor: Love and Thunder did ~¥180-190 million on ~120,000 admissions on Friday.

Quite good, really, almost great (it is for the genre). MCU/DC films are really frontloaded though, so if it increases tomorrow, it'll be small. I expect it to remain mostly flat followed by a 20% or so dip on Sunday. That would get it between ¥325-350 million and 210,000-225,000 admissions, or around this range over the weekend (definitely enough for #1 there), for a 3-day opening likely above ¥500 million and 325,000+ admissions.

The range above would be like a 40/45% increase over Ragnarok.

It can be difficult for a MCU/DC film to even open above ¥300 million over the weekend frame (on the higher-end of the genre if you exclude Spider-Man and Avenger films, which have a huge advantage over everything else), so if it does "just" that, it'd be impressive.

There's a world of difference between not crying over it and having nationwide joy over it. I've seen countless signs celebrating his assassination, restaurants offering discount all day in celebration, etc. It's sick, and does not help their cause at all if it genuinely is based in formal and diplomatic issues (which it isn't).

Think it's hard for TGM to miss 10 billion now. Even if it dropped 30% every week from here on out it would still get there, especially with a little bit of help from summer break and obon.
