would a Beverly Hills Cop 4 with Eddie Murphy be a hit?
the original was even bigger than Top Gun back in the day

No.
Unfortunately the legacy has been diluted by its sequels and visually it would be much less of abig screen must see.

It might be able to do Bad Boys 3 numbers, but a cop protaganist just isn't gonna sell more than that in the 2020s.
Back to the Future 4 is the only legacy sequel that could match Top Gun, but many have already discussed the reasons we probably won't get it.

I think the legacy sequels that have a higher chance of success are likely holiday movie sequels that have stayed relevant classics watched each year.
Still think Home Alone can push a big box office gross with a fresh approach. To show how massive it was, it reached #3 of all time domestic when it was released. There's an entire generation that still watches it every December. Elf was so universally loved I wouldn't be shocked by a $300M+ gross for a sequel if it ever happened either.
Alternately, movies with universally popular themes that can be re-imagined would work. Also movies with famous pairings. Revolutionary Road was too heavy for the audience but a new pair up of Winslet/Leo with the right director has possibilities.

They made a tv pilot with Eddie that was so bad no one has ever seen it. Actually apparently it was good, but Murphy refused to be in anything past the pilot.

You can’t make home alone today with todays technology. Hell even the original shouldn’t have happened. The parents would have paid for cop to kick in the door and search for Kevin.
Out of the highest adjusted franchises (jesus so many have already be done)
I'd still be down for a Lethal Weapon 5, Ocean's 11 with the original cast and maybe Bullock and crew teaming up, maybe if Carrey came back as Ace Ventura, National Treasure, A third Sherlock Holmes film, etc.
And I know I've said this at least a dozen times. But Hocus Pocus 2 being on Disney+ is the dumbest thing ever. It would have been huge in theaters.

Speed 3 with Reeves and Bullock would be big imo.

Re: would a Beverly Hills Cop 4 with Eddie Murphy be a hit?
A fourth Beverly Hills Cop wouldn't be a hit, and it's nothing to do with the sequels. It's to do with Eddie Murphy. Obviously he isn't hated but he's also not intensely liked, and hasn't been for about 20 years. Tom Cruise has remained in the public eye and liked for his entire career (excepting a few crazy years). Coming 2 America is probably somewhat of a litmus test for any legacy sequel starring Murphy.
Apparently Mel Gibson is going to direct a fifth Lethal Weapon. Not sure that'll be a hit either, but I'm excited for it.
