Thanks to the holiday weekend, it had an amazing hold and a PTA better than in the last two weeks. The movie is on its sure way to cross $70 million. The question is if it will be able to outgross Ray's roughly $74 million.

Updated the chart. As of now, I consider it a lock for $75 million. The rest will be decided by the Oscars on Sunday.
I say: GO SIDEWAYS!!!

Personally, I think the international numbers look good for a movie of this kind. The reviews everywhere are just as raving as in the USA (well, at least in UK, France and Germany), so I see good legs everywhere. Expect it to make at least $35 million overseas and over $110 million worldwide.

Film 'Sideways' Sends Pinot Noir Sales Up
"Sideways," the movie about two guys, a road trip and a whole lot of wine, may be sending pinot noir sales upward.
Pinot noir, the relatively obscure red wine beloved by the movie's snobby but sweet character Miles, has been experiencing a gentle upswing in popularity for some years. But the numbers jumped sharply after "Sideways" opened last fall, according to supermarket, drug and liquor store sales data from ACNielsen.
Pinot noir sales reached 370,000 cases for the 12 weeks ending Jan. 15, up nearly 16 percent from the same period a year ago, according to an ACNielsen analysis to be released Monday.
Interestingly, domestic pinot noir was driving growth whereas a year ago both foreign and domestic pinot noir sales were growing. In California, the sales spike was higher, 33 percent.
Danny Brager, vice president of ACNielsen Beverage Alcohol Team, said in a news release that it's difficult to quantify the movie's exact impact but "it looks like more than a coincidence that this varietal's sales have been stronger than ever since the movie's release."
Vintners and wine store owners say they've definitely noticed the "Sideways" effect.
At the Wild Horse winery on California's Central Coast, the region where the movie is set, supermarket sales of pinot noir jumped 135 percent, to 480 cases, for the four weeks ending Jan. 15.
"You just don't get those kind of jumps," said George Christie, brand manager. "The Central Coast has been producing some incredible wines for quite some time. I think it's fabulous that a movie like this comes along and now people are trying the wines out."
In the movie, Miles, played by Paul Giamatti, rhapsodizes about pinot noir, a challenging grape to work with since it only grows in certain regions and demands a lot of attention on and off the vine.
The character disdains merlot, a consumer favorite that continues to sell well, according to the ACNielsen data. Merlot was up 3 percent to more than 3.2 million cases sold for the 12 weeks ending Jan. 15 and was the leading red varietal.
"Sideways," which is up for five Academy Awards at this year's Oscars, is also being credited with boosting tourism to the Central Coast.
At the San Francisco Wine Trading Company, Gary Marcaletti said it's not hard to spot a "Sideways" customer. "They come in, they talk about the movie and then they say, what's going on with the pinot noir?"

Well, as expected, Sideways won only one Academy Award during the Oscar show and that for Best Adapted Screenplay (well-deserved, by the way). Neither this win, nor the exposure to the audiences during the Oscars could help to boost its box-office and last weekend, Sideways had the biggest drop in its entire run. It has become clear that it won't pass Ray now and will be happy to settle for $71-74 million. Still not too shabby!

Thanks, Lec. I know it's on BOM, but I'm still paranoid for the spyware.
So, if is cost $16 mil and made $66 mil, that's a better return than most blockbusters. \:D/ In fact it's better than all the LotR movies (but worldwide saved LotR).

It has been a great run, but it is definitely nearing its end. It most likely won't overtake Ray's gross anymore and will end up as the 4th biggest Best Picture nominee this year, but still, a total gross of around $74-75 million is not too shabby for this movie.

Despite the upcoming DVD-release, I believe it'll have a good run in dollar-theatres which it probably still has to hit. At this point I see it getting at least $73 million.
