So, anyone think Sin City will be first by the end of the week? Or by tomorrow (Tonight) maybe?

Good week-to-week drops across the board. We should see some nice holds this weekend.

Yep. I also can't remember the last time there was only one movie opening.

The only movie that should be impacted by The Amityville Horror is The Ring Two, which is falling off the face of the earth anyway.

Well that doesn't make sense to me. I thought there had been big weekday drops for sin city last week? that it was a weekend movie? In general I'm very surprised that the smallest drops were coming out of sahara and sin city, rather than fever pitch, as i consider fever to be a "softer" movie. Something easier to handle mid week, after a day at work, a bit of a date or socil movie. I would have thought the numbers would be reversed, and fever would have a 60% drop and sin city a 72% one?

A lot of Fever Pitch's audience is probably teenage girls, who presumably went back to school.

From what I saw a majority of the "Fever Pitch" audience were teens. There were some adults mixed in, but what did a majority of the business at my theater were teens. It could've been different elsewhere, but that's just what I saw. I can't really figure it out, this is a good movie and people just won't come see it, go figure.

Hmmm. i didn't think Drew Barryrmore was actually a teenage girl star. I think its older people that watch her actually. Its good to hear this from you banjo and libs, but totally different than where I was. I might have been one of the younger ones there. There were few people I'd say, under the age of 20.

yea .. but at the end of the day, fever pitch is a romantic movie, watched more by the female population ( who are prolly busy during the day) or a date movie (i see few guys subjecting themselves to a romance movie on a weekday : ) .... we all have presumptions about them : )

That's why I thought Kung-Fu Hustle should've moved all its schedule up one week and targeted this weekend to be its wide release. It would've been a perfect counter-programming against The Amityville Horror to build the momentum on before going into May, where the big guns are waiting. Next weekend is much more crowded with another comedy and a mature drama that both could take away some of its opening audience.

I think it's pretty clear that studio heads steered clear of Amityville Horror because they heeded BKB's warnings. If somebody has a better explanation for not releasing anything wide but that next weekend, I haven't heard it, and until I do, I'm just going with the BKB theory.

Wow, Sin City is down less then 40% from last week! Quite impressive, and very indicative of that great WOM kicking in. :)

To answer your question, it was the February 28th weekend of 2003, when only Cradle to the Grave Opened.

Here's the link.

Notice all the tiny declines for comedies and kid movies. I think the same thing could happen.

Does January 7th count? I remember that some movies were expanding, but that White Noise was essentially the only opener. You may as well count The Grudge's Oct. 22nd as a one weekend release (Surviving Christmas only made 4 million), and a very similar one as the main opening was a big horror movie. Once again, small drops were across the board (the only movie to drop over 50% in the top 15 was Raise Your Voice which lost over 1,000 of it's theaters), with a drop under 20%, 30%, and several under 40%.

So yeah, I'd agree that we'll see some small declines for the holdovers, especially with the top four of them all having very good to excellent WOM.

Nice drops for all the flicks. Hopefully THE AMITYVILLE HORROR will not be number one this weekend. Maybe SIN CITY will have a huge increase? Alright, won't happen but I can dream, right?
