![Post Post](./styles/serene/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif) Can ROTS be highest movie of 2005 w/only 1 wk at #1?
Okay I'm asking this since Madagascar can very easily take ROTS 2nd weekend. So is it possible for it to be the highest grosser despite only one weekend at number one?

I should add that no movie to my knowledge has been number one w/ only one weekend at the number one.
Edit: Correction: Batman Forever (although didn't end up at number one overall) which was the number one movie by the end of 1995 only had one week at number one.

That's an interesting point, yeah. But then again if it hasn't happened before, it doesn't mean it can't happen now. What the movie will make in its first 8 days will be decisive for the overall outcome anyway.

That was the number 4 movie though.

Heres a list of films that were number one for the year with only 2 weeks:
Shrek 2
Spider-Man
Shrek was thought to be the number one movie of 2001 and that only had one week (it ended up at number 3, I figured either that or FOTR would be number one, I was wrong)
Nemo was number one for two non consecutive weekends, was number one for a while.
And a simular story to Batman, Armegeddon was number one for only one weekend, and was number one movie of 98, but Private Ryan got rerleased and passed Armegeddon.

I honestly don't know if madagascar can beat Star Wars in week 2.
It will be awfully close.

I haven't heard anyone too excited about Madagascar - my family thought the trailer looked stoopid. Plus, it's being released while elementary school is still in session, so the weekday BO totals won't be any big scoop. So I don't think ROTS will be in any danger in week 2. As to #1 overall - I'm not so sure...

Even if SW is front loaded, I don't think it is going to drop more than 40-45% in it's secodn weekend. So if it grosses 90 mill over the 3 day, and if it is good, then it should make about 50 mill in it's second weekend. I don't think it will get topped in the second weekend.

I think you underestimate Madagascar ... I could see it opening in the 35-45 range needed to compete with Star Wars.

well, really a 35-45m opening would be quite dissapointing, considering Shrek 2 made 72m the same time last year, in its 2nd weekend. Madagascar will open to about 60m i would've thought, huge theater count an'all.

I don't see it coming anywhere near the 72 of Shrek.
Maybe it can pull 55, but I just don't know. Haven't been to sold on its advertising.

I'm one of the biggest SW skeptics around here, but this 6th one is going to get a lot of press as being better than the last 2 and will probably beat Madagascar in the second weekend.

Madagascar is THE BIG CGI animated movie of the summer and doesn't have too much competition. Advertising with "From the Makers of Shrek" won't hurt either. This one actually looks funny and much better than Shark Tale. I think an opening weekend of $50+ million is absolutely guaranteed.
